Not getting what you want from edtech? The typical rant is that edtech is money-grabbing, overpromising, and don't understand the classroom. I think the main issue is that educational systems aren't describing what they want. This is a significant cultural issue. Education systems aren't accustomed to doing this. Prior edtech didn't have much performance uncertainty and had well-defined use conditions. It was sufficient to compare product features since most features were easily describable and binary. AI is different. If schools and systems don't express what they want and how they'll evaluate a tool, then who the hell knows what they'll get. That's what's happening now, and it will continue to happen unless and until the systems express what they want, have a way to evaluate products, and continuously refine their needs statements. It is difficult to describe how critical this is to people who have never needed to articulate requirements. The U.S. military doesn't just say to companies "go build a fighter jet". They explain what success means. I don't expect individual schools to do this, but someone in the industry needs to step up. And not just anybody. Articulating requirements is an art form. If the language is too loose then your needs might not be met, but if they're too specific then innovative approaches are stifled. This is not something you throw a newbie at. Inside Higher Ed has greatly expanded and updated its article on the situation at ETS.  Do check it out again if you haven’t looked since it was posted yesterday. I'll post a link in the comments. One thing that grabbed my attention was a note that “ETS will no longer administer the SAT.”  This comes after 77 years of ETS involvement in that test. A College Board spokesman confirmed that “with the SAT Suite’s full transition to digital on College Board’s Bluebook testing platform, we now develop and administer the SAT and PSAT-related assessments directly.” This represents the end of an era, I suppose, as running the SAT on behalf of the College Board was the whole reason that ETS came into existence in the first place.  The role of ETS in the running of the SAT has steadily diminished since the 2010s, but at one point College Board work represented more than 80% of ETS’s revenue, according to some sources. Indeed, for decades and decades that was the whole raison d’etre of ETS.  As recently as last year College Board work accounted for about 30% of ETS’s revenues. As Inside Higher Ed points out ETS will remain involved with the College Board (contributing to the AP program, I guess), but their new contract is much less lucrative than the previous one.
