rockthedub turns 15. (3/15/2021)

i used to make compilations to celebrate this site's anniversaries. i don't know why; the one compilation that made mad noise—Offshore Drilling with Kid Hum—dropped in May of 2009, and I don't really remember why. people don't remember that stuff; these dates don't really matter. my wife did give me some props this morning though; 15 years of having anything is a huge accomplishment. i am busy today, but felt compelled to put some words on the site on this day.

it's interesting; i vaguely remember setting up a Blogspot page at the time; it was really to share this review of Green Lantern's Alive on Arrival mixtape. i must have dug it, because i then put up a playlist featuring 20 tunes: 10 dnb, 7 hip-hop/rap, and 3 of other genres (always doing the most). then i wrote a piece influenced by some shit the Green Lantern tape had me thinking about INRE Trenton. i just reread the piece and didn't like a large chunk of it. i wasn't hating on everything, but i would've written that way differently.

rockthedub.com made me the person i am today. i learned how to blog on here—mostly about music, but i've griped about daily life, reviewed shows like The Sopranos and LOST, and ran with the big dogs when it came to upfront content. that game was dope at times, and put me in a position to be where i've been since 2012. almost nine years of grinding and finding myself doing something that excites me. and growing as a writer (i hope). and a podcaster. and a sometimes talking head. whatever i'm doing, this very site was a testing ground for it. it was where i honed my skills while putting my appreciation on display.

think of someone like ELUCID, for example.  we did a lot during our time. and he's still that guy. his group, Armand Hammer (w/ billy woods) just put out Haram, a project they did with The Alchemist. i'd go in on it but a) i haven't had nearly enough time to decipher it, but more importantly, b) there are already dope pieces written to help you start to understand what  J. Edward Keyes called "a Japanese puzzle box." it also features Curly Castro, which is dope!

if 15 years of keeping a blog have taught me anything, it's that things can change on a dime, so don't sweat the small stuff. the amount of times i got amped because i didn't get a shout out or some pinhead got an exclusive over me mean nothing because where even are...let me chill. i've got work to finish. thanks for rocking with me for however long you've been rocking.

what's your favorite rockthedub memory? artist you discovered here? is anyone even still around anymore? props to you if you are.

Milo and Elucid Team Up For 'Nostrum Grocers'

Crazy how these things work. According to the receipt I found stuck under the driver's seat, Nostrum Grocers (aka the collaboration from Milo and Elucid) was born almost three years ago, when Elucid flew out to Milwaukee to chop it up with Rory. They then sat on the project, not getting back into the project until 2017. Interesting enough, during the time this album was conceived to when it was released, both emcees became fathers. You can hear growth and optimism in the lyrics, although it packs equal amounts of black power and clarity in the 10-track opus as well.

Stream and cop this album via Bandcamp, and if you're in the NY area, you can hear it performed live on August 19 at Elsewhere (Zone One) in Brooklyn.

Elucid Releases His Impressive Cover of Zoe Leonard's "I Want A President"

Without giving me much info, Lessondary member Elucid sent me an MP3 of his cover of Zoe Leonard's poem "I Want A President." I actually played this immediately after placing my vote this morning, and wanted to make sure this impressive cover was released today; low and behold, he threw it up on Bandcamp for the world to partake in.

If you're not familiar with the original, this is the perfect sentiment to drop in a world where we could be electing the first female president, although "I Want A President" takes things a step further. In releasing the cover, Elucid dropped the following statement: "Dizzied by the chaos and confusion of both the US and South African presidential elections during the summer of 2016, I discovered the poem “I Want A President” by Zoe Leonard. The spirit It contained," he continues, "inspired me to record this cover version."

Stream and download this gem down below.

The Lessondary Crew is FINALLY Dropping That Album

I actually feel like an asshole; I'd seen this hit the Internets a bit ago, but life had me from actually peeping it. That kills me, because I feel like I've been waiting for this Lessondary group album for forever already. Think about it: the combined forces of Tanya Morgan, Ilyas, Elucid, Rob Cave, Jermiside, Brickbeats, AND Aeon?! I feel like I've been hearing about this at LEAST since the release of Brooklynati, and it looks like the squad has finally got the project to gether.

This first cut, which is the first cut on the forthcoming Ahead of Schedule, is a hook-less, hyper posse cut that finds the various MCs going for broke over a Brickbeats track. If you listen to this and don't understand why I fucks with them, you need your head examined.

Ahead of Schedule drops on June 24, 2016; pre-order via Bandcamp today.

Word is Elucid has a project, Save Yourself, set to drop on Backwoodz on April 15. You can grab Osage right now via Bandcamp, and stream the fuck out of it below.

Willie Green - A Suite For Souled People

These might be the only tracks I want to hear living in a post-Ferguson world. Well, it's the world we've lived in, but the nonsense is front and center. Willie Green said he felt some kind of way after Ferguson, and put together this project:

"The recent events in Ferguson, Missouri (as well as Staten Island, Beavercreek, Ohio, and Los Angeles) have lifted a veil of comfortable ignorance across this country. The murder of Michael Brown, resultant cover up and egregious treatment of protesters has shown that the perception of Black people in America has changed little since the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s. Americans live in a country where the oppressed are dehumanized and told to be quiet and gracious about their anger; and where the oppressors are harbored by our government and rewarded by our peers. Where the media warps facts to prove agendas against citizens and digital voices rush to play devil’s advocate to conceal their own bias. These are terrifying statements and not exaggerations. I’m no revolutionary. But I am someone who wants to look his children in the eyes and say when his country showed its worst, he did something."

Elucid, billy woods, and Curly Castro do their thing on this one.

Armand Hammer ft. L'Wren - "The Rent Is Too Damn High"

I want to say this is one of the first tracks that Elucid let me hear from his Armand Hammer project with billy woods. Still one of my favorites from the project, and I'm glad that they hooked up a video for it. Best way to spend July 4th? Cop Race Music.

Cult Favorite - For Madmen Only

Cult Favorite = AM Breakups and Elucid. This project is fire. It's available on digital download and limited-edition vinyl; more details via their Bandcamp on that. Stream this and read on...

For Madmen Only is the debut album by Cult Favorite. One producer, one MC. Bass rumbles, the organ glitches and a congregation sways as one, eyes glassy. The leader stands at podium, eyes afire, face sheathed in the sweat of his exertions. Eager hands greet the prodigal and usher them into the midst of the flock. Otherworldly beats filter through arcane apparatus barely glimpsed behind hanging gaberdine.  The temple is a storefront, the church is a streetcorner, the Word is profane.
Cult Favorite is New York. Producer A.M. Breakups’s sound was born upstate, and despite years making noise in the NYC underground, the rust belt embedded in his sound. Brooklyn’s own Elucid is his city in rhyme form, urgent, grating, unassailable; a leviathan. Both have critically acclaimed released work on their own but Cult Favorite is a startlingly coherent collaboration, pushing the boundaries of the genre and staking a claim to new territory. Nine tracks of millenial anxiety and fever visions, black noise and white phosphorous, this is For Madmen Only.

Rob Viktum ft. Elucid "Forget Me Nots"

Tracks like this kill me. I hear the first few bars and think "hey, I've heard this shit before", and they send a familiar sound down a different lane. I guess you have to do that, when you've got a timebomb like Elucid set to blow up on your track. This cat is one of the few vocal'd cuts from Rob Viktum's Progress 2, and yeah, this is my favorite. Sue me for rollin' with the best.

Disc Jockey Nappy x Elucid "If U Scared"

Sucks to be you. You probably think Elucid's silence on the released-tune front is something to get upset about. You don't have the luxury of hearing the shit he's been cooking up. Including the album that he is working on with Nappy. All Nappy beats, all Elucid rhymes. Shit's like halfway done, it sounds like, and this short(!) snippet is just a taste. You ain't ready, nor do you even know.
