2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe Preview

Updated October 13, 2023

Colin Ryan specializes in writing about new cars. He has done this for the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader, Popular Mechanics, Mazda and Lexus customer magazines, plus a bunch of enthusiast sites and publications. And he spent several years as a staff writer at BBC Top Gear magazine. During this zig-zag of a career trajectory, he has driven everything from budget Malaysian hatchbacks (yes, they exist) to scarily expensive Italian exotica.

The 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe is a new, sleeker, sportier variant of the GV80 midsize luxury SUV. We expect pricing to start at around $70,000.

Avid readers of the Kelley Blue Book news section will recall seeing this. Well, the concept that eventually led to this production model. Of course, it’s not a coupe in the traditional sense, but one of those SUVs with a fastback roof that marketing departments love to call coupes. Think of the relationship between the BMW X5 and X6, the Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV, and the GLE Coupe.

Now Genesis is getting in on the act, unveiling this sleeker version of the GV80 SUV. The SUV offers the option of a third seating row; this Coupe will not for obvious reasons. That roof cuts down on headroom and cargo space to pursue extra style. We think it’s good to have the choice. We’re expecting good things from the GV80 Coupe. After all, the GV80 SUV on which it’s based is a multiple Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award winner.

What’s New for 2025

Although the GV80 SUV launched for the 2021 model year, this GV80 Coupe variant is all-new. There is a caveat, however — this information relates to GV80 vehicles in the company’s domestic Korean market. That said, we reckon most of this will translate to those models destined for North America, with perhaps some possible exceptions like paint choices.

On-Sale Date

We anticipate the 2025 GV80 Coupe and the refreshed-for-2025 GV80 SUV going on sale in the second half of 2024.

2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe Pricing

We expect the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe to start at around $70,000. For comparison, the 2024 BMW X6 begins at $74K. The revised-for-2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe variants are AMG models exclusively, starting at about $90K. Before buying a new GV80 Coupe, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should pay.

Power, Ride and Handling

The base engine offered in the 2025 GV80 Coupe is a turbocharged 4-cylinder unit making 304 horsepower, enabling a standstill-to-60-mph sprint of around six seconds. Mildly entertaining.

If buyers of the Coupe have the same engine preferences as those who purchase the GV80 SUV, then the 380-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 will be selected, shaving a second off the zero-to-60 time. That would put the GV80 Coupe on a similar footing as the BMW X6 xDrive40i — in other words, the base X6.

However, fueling the Coupe’s sportier aspirations is a model-exclusive engine, the same V6 with an additional electric supercharger to create 415 hp. This engine also brings a Sport+ driving mode and launch control. We reckon both V6-powered variants will have an adaptive suspension to read the road ahead and adjust its settings accordingly.

We don’t yet know of any GV80 Coupe trim levels, but this would seem like a good opportunity for Genesis to branch out into similar territory as BMW’s M vehicles and the AMG models from Mercedes-Benz. Even something like the N models made by parent company Hyundai — a version with more of a driver’s edge.

Fuel Economy

For all their good qualities, a lot of Genesis vehicles don’t list excellent fuel economy among them. If the GV80 SUV is any indication, the Coupe will likely achieve about 22 combined mpg with the smallest engine and around 20 mpg with the least potent V6 — average at best.

Quality Interior

We’ve sat in the back of the GV80 Coupe concept car, which was strictly a 4-seater. The production version will be a 5-seater. The rear headroom in the concept was acceptable for an adult male of average size. The rear legroom was adequate as well. Some buyers will be happy to forgo a little SUV practicality to gain extra visual impact, and that’s fine by us. Assuming Genesis continues its practice of filling its cabins with high-quality materials put together well and designed with intelligence and flair, then the GV80 Coupe is going to be another fine example of the company’s work. The revised-for-2025 GV80 SUV has a new 27-inch display incorporating an instrument cluster with an infotainment touchscreen, and the GV80 Coupe follows suit. There are some Coupe-specific items, like a flat-bottomed steering wheel and metal pedals, to accentuate the sporty vibe. Genesis is also offering model-exclusive interior color schemes.

Confident Exterior

The 2025 GV80 Coupe debuts simultaneously as its SUV counterpart receives a mid-generation revamp. So, the SUV’s revised grille and new headlamps are also part of the new Coupe’s exterior. The big difference, though, is that roof. Everyone will have their take on this, but we think the proportions work. If anyone ever considered the BMW X6 a somewhat awkward derivation of the X5, their aesthetic senses may react better to the GV80 Coupe.

Engine & Transmission

The GV80 Coupe shares two engines with its SUV stablemate: a turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder unit and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. The former makes 304 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, and the latter (traditionally the more popular choice in the SUV) generates 380 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque.

However, the Coupe takes things to another level with an exclusive 3.5-liter V6 turbocharged and supercharged to produce 415 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque.

We’ll assume the 8-speed automatic transmission used in the GV80 SUV will be installed here and that all-wheel drive (AWD) will be standard, in common with its boxier brethren.

5-Year/60,000-Mile Warranty

Like its parent company, Hyundai, Genesis offers the best warranties in the business. The new-vehicle warranty lasts five years or 60,000 miles (whichever happens first), roadside assistance is provided for five years with unlimited mileage, scheduled maintenance is free for the first three years or 36,000 miles, and powertrains are covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Safety Ratings

The current generation of the GV80 SUV has been named a Top Safety Pick+, the highest accolade from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It’s also earned a maximum 5-Star overall score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). We anticipate similar results if the GV80 Coupe is put through the same crash-test programs.

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.

FAQs

How much will the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe cost?

We expect the 2025 GV80 Coupe to start close to $70,000. The regular 2025 GV80 SUV will probably begin in the $59K region.

When does the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe go on sale?

We’re anticipating the new GV80 Coupe variant to reach the dealerships in the second half of 2024.

Will there be a high-performance version of the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe?

A high-performance iteration of the GV80 would be a logical step for a luxury car maker growing in confidence. It has already shown that it can compete in the usual premium ways, so making a rival for something like a BMW M or Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicle might well be a possibility down the road.
