Broken Allegiance: (A Tom Kagan Novel) Kindle Edition
Selected as the 2014 Kindle Book Awards Semi-Finalist in the Mystery/Thriller category
Winner of The 2014 National Indie Excellence Books Awards contest for mystery novels and finalist in the 2013 Grace Awards competition for mystery/suspense.
Police gang detective Tom Kagan sought justice for more than ten years, leaving him a broken man. His only reason for living—the woman he loves and the badge he swore to uphold. When a man is brutally killed in a vineyard on the outskirts of Santa Rosa, California, it sparks a series of events that test what’s left of Kagan’s resolve to protect and serve.
Secrets from the past thwart Kagan’s efforts to unravel a series of killings sanctioned from within the walls of California’s highest security prison. From the lush vineyards of Sonoma County to the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe, the detective must outsmart a killer who is moving in for one epic killing spree.
Leaders of the notorious Nuestra Family prison gang are fighting for power, a struggle that spills out onto the streets of California. Kagan joins forces with Special Agent Hector Garcia, a feisty supervisor of the Special Services Unit for the California Department of Corrections; Diane Phillips, a beautiful and hard-charging prosecutor; and Mikio Sanchez, a former gang member marked for death. Through the eyes of cops and gangsters, readers are able to glimpse the seldom seen workings of the gangster underworld.
Broken Allegiance is about treacherous lies, broken promises, and shattered lives—about life, death and a man’s honor.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2014Author Mark Young knows his stuff, having served for decades as a California cop, a good fraction of it in a unit tasked with fighting the organized crime gangs that run much of the criminal activity there and even run the prisons.
The book's hero, Tom Kagan, is tough, skilled, likeable, admirable, and determined to bring to justice his vicious adversary, the wily Ghost, responsible for numerous murders of gang-bangers and innocents alike. Kagan pursues him relentlessly, jeopardizing his marriage, losing a good friend in the process, allying with other law-enforcement professionals.
The plot is compelling, the descriptions crisp, the characters believable and interesting, the ending satisfying.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2014This book is well written and the characters in the book are colorful and realistic. I read a lot of mystery and crime books and this is now one of my favorites. Well done. One can definitely tell that the author has experience in these issues which makes the reading much more enjoyable. I could not put it down. I look forward to reading more of Mark Young's books.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2014When Mark Young writes about California's gang culture, we should all listen. He knows about that terrible world from his experiences in law enforcement. Whether he's writing about Tom Kagan, our hero, or Ghost, the conscience-less killer, or poor Gato who is sucked in because that's the only life he knows, there is authority in Mark's words.
In this fascinating story that traces the confrontation between the good guys and the bad, we see the cost to both sides for fighting this war. While I was fascinated by the book and enjoyed it very much, I am more fascinated by the real guys who stand in the gap so the rest of us don't have to face the Ghosts of the world. Kudos to Mark for the great book and thanks for being a real life Tom Kagan.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2014The book kept my interest and I liked the characters. Long in spots, but I finished it in a day and a half.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018Loved the story. Well written with many twists. Good character development.
Only downside was that at times it was confusing as to the timeline. Some things went back in time and it was not immediately evident.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2014I loved this book! It is my favorite Mark Young novel. I liked it because it was fast paced, accurately described police procedures without becoming droll, and blew open the ugly, yet real, connections between gang members on the street and those incarcerated.
Tony Hillerman is my all-time favorite author. In my opinion, Mark's style is much like Mr. Hillerman's, which is intended as a big compliment, given all the awards and international recognition received by Mr. Hillerman. Mark's protagonist is multi-faceted, with flaws and issues to which most of us can relate. Also, his description of the world of gangs was unlike those of many other authors. He helped us to understand the deep roots this world grows, and how attractive it can be to those who believe their life alternatives are limited. Mark also gives us a glimpse into the beautiful world of Sonoma County, CA, USA. I enjoyed Mark's description of the interactions between the Santa Rosa Police Department and other law enforcement agencies, particularly the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
I was surprised to learn that this was Mark's first book, and that he waited to publish it until he had completed several others. Mark has real talent and skill as an author. I am amazed at how authors such as Mark can pace a book so well. His foreshadowing was subtle and intriguing. Wow.
I hope to read more Tom Kagan stories in the near future!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2014Mr. Young writes with the voice of authority stemming from experience. Even before I read about his background I knew he had to have had first hand knowledge about the "face" of gangland and .
Even though it was a novel, I learned a great deal about police work and the horrors that fill their lives as well as the personal fears that are embedded in their profession. I truly was rivited to this
book. At times, I felt myself holding my breath because of the descriptive details as the action played out.
Thank you, Mr. Young. Reading your book was definitely not a waste of time.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2014The characters were interesting and most had depth to them. The story was intriguing with twists and turns. Spoiler alert - the good guys don't all win. My only hesitation in giving five stars was the strong God references throughout the book.
