Rabbi David Oppenheim (1664-1736) served as Rabbi of Nikolsburg and Prague. He was a recognized Halachic authority and respected as an influential figure due to his connections with the ruling Caesars. Rabbi Dovid authored about 20 books on Halachah and Aggadah including Shu”t Nish’al David.

Rabbi David was famed for his wealth, inherited from his uncle, Samuel Oppenheim. The core of his prominent library was similarly inherited from Samuel who received many valuable, Turkish manuscripts in Hebrew from Prince Eugene of Savoy.

Rabbi David spared no effort or expense in expanding his library which included thousands of items. His collections form an important part of the Hebrew section of the Bodleian Library in Oxford University. Rabbi David reputedly supplied printing houses with high quality paper to use in the printing of his books. This may be the reason that some of his books were the only ones of that type to endure.

Fascinating, alphabetically arranged list of books including 4000 published books and 1000 manuscripts on paper and parchment.
Rabbi Yisrael Breslau of Hamburg was the son of Rabbi Michel, Av Beit Din Breslau. A prominent scholar, he was chosen as arbitrator on inter-communal disputes, on behalf of the Hamburg community, alongside Rabbi Yaakov Emden. (Chachmei AH”V p.101).
