The disappearance of Mike Bowditch’s beloved mentor reveals an ominous connection to a 15-year-old cold case in One Last Lie, the new thriller from bestselling Edgar Award finalist Paul Doiron.

“Never trust a man without secrets.” These are the last words retired game warden Charley Stevens speaks to his surrogate son, Warden Investigator Mike Bowditch, before the old man vanishes without explanation. Mike suspects his friend’s mysterious departure has to do with an antique warden badge that recently resurfaced at a flea market ― a badge connected to a cold case from Charley’s past that the Maine Warden Service would rather forget.

Fifteen years ago, a young warden was sent on an undercover mission to infiltrate a notorious poaching ring and never returned. He was presumed dead, but his body was never recovered. Mike is desperate to find Charley before he meets a similar fate. His investigation brings him to the miles of forest and riverside towns along the Canadian border―but he soon learns that even his fellow wardens have secrets to keep. And Charley’s past isn’t the only one coming to light; his daughter, Stacey, has resurfaced to search for her missing father, and Mike must grapple with the return of the woman he once thought was gone forever.

Forced to question his faith in the man he sees as a father, Mike must reopen a cold case that powerful people―one of whom may be a killer―will do anything to keep closed.

Review

Praise for One Last Lie:

“Edgar finalist Doiron artfully blends a whodunit plot with superior characterizations in his top-notch 11th mystery…vividly portrays the Maine woods setting while maintaining taut suspense.” Publishers Weekly (starred)

"This novel is something of a departure for Doiron... the suspenseful, fast-paced plot has more twists and turns than usual."
Associated Press

"Before you read this book, clear your schedule. It’s the kind of story best read in one gulp...[Doiron] keeps getting better."
New York Journal of Books

One Last Lie is a triumph for aficionados and newcomers alike. The secrets, old and new, are compelling, and Doiron's landscape imagery is perfectly balanced (as is the literary history)...Trust, friendship, love, faith and how the family we choose holds powerful sway is at the heart of this impressive series entry.” Shelf Awareness

“Doiron’s masterful plotting pulls it all together, and the reader gets to meet an odd assortment of extraordinarily well-defined characters―good guys and bad―while learning more about both the natural and the political history of the Pine Tree State.” ―
Booklist

Praise for Paul Doiron and the Mike Bowditch mysteries:

“Doiron captures the stark beauty of his setting.” ―
New York Times Book Review for Stay Hidden

"The characters are well drawn, the Maine landscape is vividly portrayed, and Bowditch pursues his passion to protect the innocent and bring evil doers to justice regardless of personal cost." ―
Associated Press for Almost Midnight

"Doiron...[ramps] up the tension slowly until the story reaches can't-put-it-down velocity." ―
Library Journal for Almost Midnight

“Breathless pacing, dark humor, wildlife, and vivid characters.” ―
Boston Globe for Widowmaker

“As always with a Doiron novel, the characters are so well-drawn you can almost reach out and shake their hands, and the rural landscape is so vividly portrayed that the reader can smell wildflowers, marvel at the swarms of fireflies and feel the sting of the blood-thirsty insects. But the author's finest achievement is the evolution of Mike Bowditch himself.” ―
Bruce DeSilva, Associated Press for Knife Creek

“Outstanding…Doiron balances nuanced characterizations and intelligent plotting perfectly.” ―
Publishers Weekly (starred review) for Stay Hidden

"The extraordinary sense of place makes this Doiron's strongest novel yet." ―

Review: One Last Lie: A Novel by Paul Doiron

Review: One Last Lie: A Novel by Paul Doiron
Maine Game Warden Mike Bowditch is in Florida due to a background check on a new hire and a little more when he gets a phone call from Ora Stevens. She is very concerned as her husband, Charles Stevens, has not been in contact with her for over 41 hours. The legendary Game Warden is not answering his phone and he had left her a rather odd note while she was sleeping. Something has him stirred up and she thinks she knows when it happened though what happened is a huge question. During a recent trip, while they were separated, she thinks something happened as when he was back with her his mood had changed drastically. She thinks that he might have bought something from one of the dealers though she did not see him do it. By the next morning he had left, and she has no idea where he went or what he is off doing. Ora is very worried and reached out to Mike as he is family and she is alone and worried about her husband. Charley is the father Mike Bowditch never had so there is no question he is dropping everything to come back and hunt for his mentor. That hunt for Charley is what moves the plot and the action in One Last Lie: A Novel. Like the changing beauty of the Maine wilderness, the past is a constant theme in this series and it certainly is here. Whether it be the past in the form of his father, an old girlfriend, a cold case, or his history with Charley, among other things, looking back is a strong theme throughout the work. All those hooks into the past can make the present a bit shaky even before somebody tries to kill you. Unlike many authors who has several books and then seen to have some reads that are not as satisfying, Paul Doiron continues to create intense and deeply moving installments in this series. One Last Lie: A Novel is no exception as it proves in more than one-way Charley Stevens is dead on right. He often is. I received an ARC from the author with no expectation of a review. Kevin R. I wish that I had not read this book so quickly, but it was impossible to stop turning the pages! Mike Bowditch is a Maine Warden. The Wardens have particular responsibilities for crimes involving the wild life of Maine, but they are also full-fledged law enforcement officers. We have followed Mike for eleven books now, and will continue to pre-order them. They are just that good. These are literary mysteries that are extraordinarily well written. I appreciate that the author does not devote pages to rehashing background information from the previous books. That strategy is great for those of us who have read the entire series, but that means that it is a series that should be read in order so that you can appreciate the richness of the setting and the characters. For example, a quick reference to his dog sitter is enough to make a writer familiar with the characters smile.) You will be so immersed in the setting that you will feel and see every bug (millions of them), be soaked by every rain drop, slip in all of the mud, be dazzled by the beauty, and sometimes crushed by the wilderness. In an unusual twist, this story begins with Mike in Florida. Mike’s Maine is not the Maine of postcards and neither is Mike’s Florida. Just as his Florida adventure is winding up, Mike gets a call that his friend and mentor, Charley is missing back in Maine. Mike’s investigation and the rest of the book are focused on finding Charley and resolving a cold case. Like all of these books, the plot is complex enough to hold your interest. There are twists and turns. Mike doesn’t know who to trust, and neither does the reader. Charley’s actions at times seemed to clash at times with how we know him, but as he says, never trust a man without secrets. There are a few series that we think are just so much better than average that we follow them closely and eagerly anticipate a new release. Paul Dorion’s Mike Bowditch books are in that category. If you like a literary mystery with excellent writing and a strong sense of place, you might also like the series by Jean-Luc Bannalec (Commissaire Dupin set in Brittany), Cay Rademacher (Roger Blanc set in Provence), Mark Pryor (Hugo Marston set in Paris), Cara Black (Aimee LeDuc set in Paris), , Louise Penny (Armand Gamache set in Canada), Ellie Griffiths (Ruth Galloway set in Britain), Ann Cleeves (the Jimmy Perez books set in the Shetland Islands, the Vera Stanhope books set in Northumberland and the Matthew Venn Two River series set in Devon), Jane Harper (set in Australia), Peter Livesey (Peter Diamond set in Bath), and Andrea Carter (Ben O’Keefe set in Inshowen Ireland). Even at full price, this book provided sufficient entertainment to be a good buy. Counting the days until the next one takes us further into Mike’s life.

I am not normally a reader of fiction but decided it was time to get back to my Maine roots. The book and the author did just that. The story and words are so very descriptive the reader feels like a silent observer to every scene. I felt like I was in the the diner with characters listening to the conversation while having a cup of coffee at their table. I could smell the flowers, hear the river, and feel the humidity. Well done.

There are layers to the tale and short stories within the story. Each character has a life and a story. The author gives each a place and life of their own.

Being from Maine I recognized many of the places and names but more importantly I recognized some of the characters and their attitudes. Maine is unique and the people can be mistaken for being nosey, but it’s just that we’re all just trying to figure out how we know you and what common thread or connection we may have with you. Some of the scenes make this inference.

Full disclosure: The author and I attended high school together and I consider him a true friend. His writing, style, and ability to tell a good story are proof he paid attention in class! Well done my friend.

Paul Doiron writes exciting and fast paced books revolving around game warden investigator Mike Bowditch.

The latest, One Last Lie, doesn't disappoint. This entry in the saga involves Bowditch's mentor and father figure Charley Stevens going to ground and someway tangled up in a murder that is tied to a long ago Warden Service tragedy.

Bowditch's none-too-simple love life also parallels and weaves into and out of the story. Both of the females in his life are integral to story lines and play off of different aspects of his personality. I've figured for a couple of books now that this arc won't get resolved but will serve as another tension-ratcheter for the tales (personally, I'd ditch Stacey, but that's just me).

These are great books to wile away the hours and get lost in well crafted and fast paced murder mysteries.

I’ve been reading Paul Doiron’s Warden Mike Bowditch books since the early days. I’m always excited to see an new chapter in the continuing saga, and this one didn’t disappoint.

I’ve been a mystery fan since I discovered Agatha Christie in my middle school library. But Doiron does something a lot of writers don’t; he lets Mike grow up. His character, and the other characters in the series in general and this book in particular grow and change. Part of growing up is learning that the people we admire and care about always have feet of clay. That’s a lesson Mike learns in this story.

As usual with Paul Doiron this is tightly plotted and well characterized. Genuinely enjoyed, and would recommend. Read the whole series, start with The Poacher’s Son. You won’t regret it!

These days, when trashing the police has become a twisted media/political sport, it’s refreshing to read a great novel where the hero is a law enforcement officer: a sworn game warden. The clandestine reopening of the fifteen year old murder of a Warden and the myriad steps of Warden Bowditch and others to bring the killers to justice has the twists and turns that mark a terrific mystery. The variety of characters and the unusual setting create a most interesting story. And, as you close the book after the last page, your mind will be turning in contemplation of the next chapter in Warden Bowditch’s journey.
