Parts of West Virginia and Maryland were blanketed with a mysterious fine white dust late Thursday evening and into early Friday morning.

The Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia appeared to be hit the hardest, but there were also photos and videos being posted from as far as Winchester, Virginia, and Hagerstown, Maryland.

A Facebook page that tracks emergencies in the Panhandle, Eastern Panhandle Working Fires, was early to post about the dust.

“Call 911!! Per The WV Dept of Environmental Protection, they have requested that anybody experiencing these issues call 911 immediately and have their local fire department respond. They also advise to shut doors and windows and avoid outdoors at this time as a common sense approach until it can be identified,” a post on the page read.

Would depend on the direction that the wind is blowing, but yeah. Been waiting for some longer range fallout from this. There is no doubt in my mind going to be some serious impact on other places around the country on account of what happened there. And with the weather patterns that happened right after, what with the snow and winds traveling, possibly bringing that stuff with it, then the snow melt and runoff going into various water tables, there is no telling what could be poisoned.

I know the weather patterns here in Maine have changed quite a bit over the last few years. We no longer get the snow that we used to get, but really cold and windy winters, and instead of a lot of rain during early Spring, it seems like it’s been kinda dry, but summers have been over the last 6-7 years a lot more humid, and when I got here 23 years ago, there was little humidity.

Also, in the Fall months we have been tending to get the rain that we would get in the Spring. This has been really messing up the farmers, as it makes it hard for them to get the soil ready for the next season, or get it cleaned up and ready to take a year off as some fields tend to get a bit of time off now and again, and other fields get used. Ground is now all muddy and hard to deal with. Then come Spring, the water tables are lower and lower as we have not had the spring rains or the snow to refill them.

A lot of people have been counting on Maine for extra potato’s now, and I have the feeling that we won’t be a lot of help this time around. Even here locally our prices are going up. Normally they would not be all that expensive, but we have been shipping out a lot to other States close to us, which we have not done a whole lot of in the past, just the last couple of years.

Not only did this poison a lot of small farms in that area, and there were a lot of them, but they potentially poisoned a lot of land for miles in other States, as well as the water tables, and the drinking water. This will effect (potentially) one heck of a lot of crops here at home….

All according to plan…
