Mahmoud Abbas In Wonderland

Not only has Mahmoud Abbas threatened to “rescind the recognition” of Israel by the P.A., but he is also calling on the Biden Administration to “rescind” the 1987 Congressional designation of the PLO as a terror group, which US presidents for over 30 years have waived every six months. He doesn’t realize that the executive branch cannot rescind this act of Congress; Biden can only do as presidents before him have done, and employ a succession of six-month waivers. The workings of the U.S. government remain a mystery to the angry rais in Ramallah.

“We stress the importance of implementing” measures that US President Joe Biden believes in, Abbas said.

This [the measures he insists be implemented because “Joe Biden believes” in them] includes the implementation of a “two-state solution and the putting an end to settlements and the violence of settlers and maintaining the historical status in al-Aqsa Mosque and preventing unilateral actions inside,” Abbas said.

How does Abbas propose that the American government, in the face of Israeli opposition, could manage to “implement” a “two-state solution” which, Abbas has made clear on many occasions, he thinks must mean squeezing Israel back within the 1949 armistice lines, with that nine-mile-wide waist from Qalqilya to the sea? It’s never going to happen, and it is time for the Bidenites to disabuse Abbas of that forlorn hope, to let him know that the Palestinians will have to negotiate with the Israelis directly. They cannot expect any outside power – whether the U.S. or Russia or the U.N. or the Quartet – to be able to force Israel to yield to his preposterous demands. As the Saudi Crown Prince, exasperated with Abbas’ whining, told him in 2018 –“make whatever deal you can.” Abbas still does not understand the Palestinians’ increasing irrelevance.

Just as it will never return to the 1949 armistice lines, Israel will never agree to remove its major settlement blocs in the West Bank. Half a million Israelis now live in Judea and Samaria, and will not be uprooted. The experience of uprooting 8,500 Israelis from Gaza in 2005 was traumatic for the entire country; uprooting not 8,500, but hundreds of thousands of Israelis from Judea and Samaria, where Jewish history was made, is simply unthinkable.

As for the “violence of settlers,” the very small amount of such violence, exaggerated by Palestinian propaganda, will stop the minute Palestinian terrorists stop murdering Israelis in the West Bank. That “settler violence” is an understandable response to those killings. The “violence,” it should be noted, is almost always directed at Palestinian property, not Palestinian lives. Olive trees are uprooted, slogans painted on houses, cars damaged – that’s what constitutes most of the “settler violence” that erupts in response to Palestinians shooting, or stabbing, or ramming with vehicles, Israeli civilians.

The Biden administration has not put forward a peace plan nor has it spoken of unveiling one.

Abbas told Biden “the priority should always be towards finding a political solution that would end the Israeli occupation of the land of Palestine along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

That is one thing the Bidenites have done right; they have not put forward their own peace plan. Let the Palestinians negotiate directly with the Israelis, without continuing to hope that the Americans will be able to pressure Israel into a surrender of territory essential to its security; the Bidenite know it won’t work, and they are not going to try and end up with egg on their faces.

As for this pipe dream of the Palestinians, hoping to have “East Jerusalem” as the capital of their future state, even the Arabs who would be most affected don’t want it. In a recent poll, 93% of the Arabs in East Jerusalem said that they preferred to live under Israeli governance than be ruled by the PA. That’s quite a vote of confidence in the Jewish state.

This [the “political solution” Abbas says he wants] should include resolving “all permanent status issues, including the issues of the refugees and the release of all prisoners under the supervision and sponsorship of the Quartet and according to international resolutions.”

What is Mahmoud Abbas smoking? There will be no Palestinian pseudo-refugees returning to the area between the “river and the sea.” Israel makes mistakes, but it is not suicidal. It does not intend to allow itself to be swamped by “refugees” (according to UNRWA’s definition) settling in a Palestinian state west of the Jordan River. No one knows better than the Jews of Israel that demography is destiny. That is why Israel has the highest birth rate among the 38 members of the O.E.C.D., and why the TFR (Total Fertility Rate) of Israeli Jews is 3.0, and has been higher than that of Israeli Arabs since 2019.
