Disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried busted in Bahamas, charged with defrauding investors out of $1.8B

By Emily Crane, NY Post, December 12, 2022:

Disgraced crypto king Sam Bankman-Fried has been arrested by authorities in the Bahamas — accused of having “built a house of cards on a foundation of deception” while defrauding investors out of $1.8 billion.

The 30-year-old was taken into custody after the Bahamian government received formal notification from the US of the charges against him, according to the Office of Attorney General in the Bahamas. He is facing charges from both US prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, confirmed Bankman-Fried’s arrest and said the criminal indictment would be unsealed Tuesday.

“Earlier this evening, Bahamian authorities arrested Samuel Bankman-Fried at the request of the U.S. Government, based on a sealed indictment filed by the SDNY,” Williams tweeted. “We expect to move to unseal the indictment in the morning and will have more to say at that time.”

The charges include wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy, securities fraud, securities fraud conspiracy and money laundering, the New York Times reported, citing a person with knowledge of the matter.

Disgraced former FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas Monday.

Early Tuesday, the SEC announced that it had also charged him with orchestrating a scheme to defraud investors in his doomed cryptocurrency FTX.

The complaint alleges that Bankman-Fried raised more than $1.8 billion from equity investors since May 2019 by promoting FTX as a safe, responsible platform for trading crypto assets.

He then diverted customer funds to Alameda Research LLC, his privately-held crypto fund, without telling the investors, according to the complaint.

Bankman-Fried was also accused of commingling FTX customers’ funds at Alameda to make undisclosed venture investments, lavish real estate purchases, and large political donations.

“We allege that Sam Bankman-Fried built a house of cards on a foundation of deception while telling investors that it was one of the safest buildings in crypto,” said SEC Chair Gary Gensler.

“The alleged fraud committed by Mr. Bankman-Fried is a clarion call to crypto platforms that they need to come into compliance with our laws.”

The shaggy-haired former billionaire has been under investigation by the Justice Department ever since FTX — which had been among the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges — imploded and filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 11.

He was also a megadonor to the Republicans. From Axios:

“The big picture: Bankman-Fried gave tens of millions to Democratic candidates and groups this cycle. He has said he also made large contributions to Republican political candidates but did so in a way that hid the donations
• “[R]eporters freak the f**k out if you donate to a Republican because they’re all super liberal,” Bankman-Fried said in an interview last month. “And I didn’t want to have that fight, so I just made all the Republican ones dark.”
• Bankman-Fried estimated he was actually the “second or third biggest” Republican donor in the country during the 2022 midterms but that he was able to shield those donations from public view.”

Isn’t that illegal?
