Celebrated British fiction author Salman Rushdie was stabbed onstage during a lecture in Chautauqua, New York, the United States on Friday.

After b”Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed, and his liver was stabbed and damaged,” said Andrew Wylie, Rushdie’s agent, who added that the author could not speak.

Local police confirmed that he was stabbed in the neck.

Authorities identified the suspect involved in the attack as Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old of Lebanese descent from New Jersey. According to the New York Post, the ongoing investigation suggested that Matar identifies with Lebanon’s Hezbollah extremist group and may have posted messages on social media supporting Iran and its Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Iranian ultra-conservative newspaper Kayhan on Saturday hailed Matar for the attack, along with several other Iranian newspapers, according to Reuters.

Rushdie was famously the subject of a 1989 fatwa — an Islamic edict to kill — from Iran’s Ayatollah after the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses, which Muslim fundamentalists deemed blasphemous.

The mullah government of Iran eventually distanced itself from the decree of late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, but anti-Rushdie sentiment lingered in extremist quarters.

75-year-old novelist Rushdie was propelled to literary stardom on the strength of his Booker Prize-winning sophomore effort Midnight’s Children in 1981.
