Background: Lawrence Henry Summers (born November 30, 1954) is an American economist who served as the 71st United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1999 to 2001 and as director of the National Economic Council from 2009 to 2010. He also served as president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006 where he is the Charles W. Eliot University Professor and director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at Harvard Kennedy School In November 2023, Summers joined the board of directors of artificial general intelligence company OpenAI.

Former Harvard President Larry Summers slammed the university for appointing a Jewish professor who has been accused of hatred against Jews as the head of its newly formed Presidential Task Force on Combating Antisemitism.
On Sunday, Summers wrote on X that he has ‘lost confidence in the determination and ability of the Harvard Corporation and Harvard leadership to maintain Harvard as a place where Jews and Israelis can flourish.’
Derek Penslar, a professor of Jewish history, was appointed the co-chair of the board, which was announced in the wake of the dissolution of the university’s advisory committee on anti-Semitism.
Penslar has previously written that ‘veins of hatred run through Jewish civilization,’ and Israel’s ‘dispossession of of Palestinians from their land and oppression of those who remain have made it one of the most disliked countries on the planet.’
The new task force will, in theory, work to combat the ongoing anti-Semitism on Harvard’s campus in the wake of the October 7 terror attacks in Israel.

Summers, who served as the university’s president from 2001 to 2006, has been openly critical of the school’s response to vicious anti-Semitism directed at its Jewish and Israeli students over the last few months.
Days following the barbaric attacks by Hamas, Summers wrote that he was ‘sickened’ by the administration’s lack of response to a letter signed by more than 30 student groups blaming Israel for the terror.
‘The silence from Harvard’s leadership, so far, coupled with a vocal and widely reported student groups’ statement blaming Israel solely, has allowed Harvard to appear at best neutral towards acts of terror against the Jewish state of Israel,’ he wrote on October 9.
‘In nearly 50 years of affiliation, I have never been as disillusioned and alienated as I am today.’
He was especially critical of then-university president Claudine Gay, who would eventually be forced out of her position for, among other things, her repeated failure to appropriately handle the raging anti-Semitism on her campus.
Gay’s failure to urgently disavow the letter was disturbing to some students, faculty, and alumni – some of whom publicly cut financial ties with the elite university.
When Gay resigned earlier this month following dozens of accusations of plagiarism and a disastrous appearance before Congress, during which she failed to wholly condemn calls for genocide of the Jews on Harvard’s campus, Penslar came to her defense.
In an interview, he claimed Gay’s ousting was an instance of the relationship between ‘Jews and blacks’ failing.
‘With so many reasons for Jews and Blacks to work together, it is tragic to see these kinds of wedges driven between them,’ he said.
‘The problems are real. But outsiders took a very real problem and proceeded to exaggerate its scope,’ he said of anti-Semitism on Harvard’s campus.
