He has been charged with disorderly conduct as a hate crime after allegedly throwing rocks at female Jewish University of Wisconsin–Madison students and shouting antisemitic remarks from a rooftop. One of the victims said the suspect called the group “(expletive) fascists.”

MADISON (WKOW) — An arrest warrant has been issued for a man charged with a hate crime after authorities say he threw rocks at Jewish UW-Madison students from a rooftop.

The warrant took effect Tuesday for Ethan W. Hanson, 21, of Deerfield.

Hanson is charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct as a hate crime.

A criminal complaint states Jewish UW-Madison students and others gathered for a vigil Nov. 7 at the campus’ Library Mall.

MADISON (WKOW) –– Madison police are investigating after someone was hit in the head with a rock after attending a vigil.

Madison Police Department Lt. Edward Marshall said a group was heading home from a candlelight vigil near Library Mall Tuesday around 7:15 p.m. One of the members reported they were hit by an object they believed was a rock.

The group also reported they heard someone making “profane and racially insensitive comments” toward the group. The group believes the incident was racially motivated, according to Marshall.

UW-Madison officials confirmed UW students were in the group that was harassed. Officials said the vigil was to support Israel.

“That our students had to confront such hateful acts is absolutely unacceptable,” Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin said in a post on UW-Madison’s news site. “Antisemitism has no place in our community. We will not tolerate violence of any kind, and we appreciate that the Madison Police Department is responding to this incident with appropriate seriousness.”
