Middle East Monitor is reporting:
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has approved the release of $75 million in crucial food assistance for Palestinians just hours before the funds were set to be redistributed elsewhere.
Blinken’s decision came after months of pressure from Democratic lawmakers and dozens of civil society groups, who warned that blocking the aid would create a humanitarian disaster for over one million Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
The aid had been held up by Republican Senators who are said to be seeking to use the funds as leverage for political concessions. Senator Jim Risch and Representative Michael McCaul, the top Republicans on the Senate and House of Representatives Foreign Relations Committees, have since late July been blocking the State Department from providing the funds to the UN’s Palestine refugee agency (UNRWA).

Update – Sunday, 10/8/23 – 06:50 a.m.
- The siege on Sderot’s police station ended during the night when the 10 terrorists holding the facility were killed and control restored to the police. At this point in time, Sderot has been declared “terrorist free” by residents are still required to remain in their homes until the IDF completes its door to door search.
- Barzili Medical Center in Ashkelon suffered a direct hit from a Hamas missile during the night. The missile hit service facilities causing damage but no injuries. The hospital continues to function normally and during the night treated over 300 wounded victims and soldiers. Hamas continued to fire rockets into Israel, primarily the south, throughout the night.
- Number of wounded, civilians and soldiers, rises to 1600. Death toll rises to 250.
- Hamas claims to have 200 Israeli hostages inside Gaza. These include soldiers, men and women, senior citizens including at least one woman suffering from dementia and young children.
- IDF continues to attack Hamas targets across the Gaza Strip including command posts, weapons production facilities and the homes of Hamas officials and officers.
- Early this morning, IDF troops freed the hostages held by terrorists in the southern township of Ofakim. One soldier was seriously wounded. The situation in Be’eri, Kfar Aza and other locations where terrorists still hold hostages is not clear.
- A senior MDA paramedic, Aharon Chaimov has been killed by terrorists in Ofakim.
- The Israel Electricity Corporation, which supplies Gaza with most of its electricity has been ordered by the Energy Minister to stop supplying the strip with power.
- Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Steinberg, aged 42 from Kibbutz Shomria, the commanding officer of the IDF’s Nahal Brigade was killed in a firefight near the settlement of Kerem Shalom.
