Tip #2 Be generous with your smile and… your time.

Smiles are the doorway to our hearts—they invite people in to know us better—they make us more approachable. As servants of the Most High God, what can we do to take down the walls that keep others from knowing our Father in heaven in a more intimate way? Could we smile more? When you focus on having the peace and love of Jesus Christ in your heart, does it make you smile? With relief? With joy, confidence, thankfulness, love . . . generosity?

“A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit” Proverbs 15:13 (NIV). Jesus Christ was approachable. Children flocked to Him. The oppressed, the poor, the sick, the rich . . . were drawn to Jesus Christ. Will smiling make you more approachable?

Being approachable includes being generous with your time.

Being approachable includes being generous with your time. And believe me, I know that’s hard. There was an experiment and study done at Princeton University years ago with students who were studying to be priests and were assigned to give a short speech about the story of the Good Samaritan. On the way to the building where they were to give the speech, they had to literally walk over a man who was in great pain and in obvious need of help. Some of the students were told they were on-time, some were told they had extra time, and some were told they were very late. Of the group that were told they were very late, 90% walked over the wounded man in order to speak about the story of the Good Samaritan.

We need to be careful we don’t step over the wounded man to walk on to the platform and preach/sing. “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds” (Proverbs 27:23 NIV). Pain is everywhere. Sometimes on the outside—sometimes only on the inside. The Good Samaritan noticed and then acted. We do not know what burdens each person brings to the Sunday morning service, but if we’re not having a conversation like the following on a fairly regular basis, we are probably missing the point of being a worship pastor. It’s a simple conversation that reaches for a supernatural result.

“Are you okay?”
“No, I’m not.”
“Do you want to pray?’
“Yes, please.”

Prayer:
Dear Jesus, there are many demands on my time—more than I can manage. Please help me obey the Holy Spirit that I may know well the condition of my flock and pastor them. Father God, help me to see the wounded man and act according to Your good and perfect will. All gifts come from You. Musical gifts are wonderful but Lord, Your love is what I want to share with others more than anything. Help me to be approachable and guide me with discernment and wisdom to do Your will now and every moment of my day. Amen.
