I’m becoming curious about history. How did mint sales do in 2006/07/08?
Speaking mint purchases through the 80’s and 90’s I bought Ag eagles and some commemratives directly from the mint in SF, and some by mail. In the late 90’s and early oo’s I continued eagles and commems and in o8 i bought my first Au modern buying buffalos, uhr, etc, but never Au eagles. The downturn and my retirement in o8 I started buying fewer, but higher budget coins from the mint as pm’s increased.
Since then it’s been mixed bag and I directed more assets to land and improvements, but always picking up a few of what I find interesting for the year.

Good Catch…
From Wikipedia “A gimmick is a novel device or idea designed primarily to attract attention or increase appeal, often with little intrinsic value.”
More and More Gimmicks
“This special coin is packaged separately in clear United States Mint plastic wrap.”
Year in and Year out the Proof Set is the #1 Seller for the numismatic side of the Mint’s business
My guess is for $27.95 these sets are mostly for gifting purposes
Now comes those that “collect” the penny
Those guys will have to purchase the W penny from the Mint OR the Bay
My guess that since the W will be ” packaged separately in clear United States Mint plastic wrap.” that you will see a Boatload on sale on the bay
By the normal allotment for gifting purposes and sell the W on the Bay to offset costs
For serious penny collectors, either pay $27.95 to the Mint for the W OR purchase it separately on the bay
You have well over a year to find out which option is the cheapest
This will Increase sales for the Mint so in that regards it will be a Successful Gimmick.
(Just like the Gimmick to sell the WWI coin with the medals and the Gimmick to make you pay $53.95 for the 2019 Kennedy with a Mintage of 100,000…
Zephin says
Yes wonder if the door going to be open for all you can get…haha
YES! a silver penny with the silver proof set…:)
cagcrisp says
As far as I know the Two most collected moderns are the Penny and the Kennedy
Thus…The “enhanced uncirculated set” in 2017, The “Silver reverse proof set” in 2018, The “Kennedy/Apollo 11 set” in 2019 and Now the “W” penny in 2019…
cagcrisp says
From The Silver Institute:
Demand for Silver Coins and Bars:
2015 292.1 Million oz.
2016 207.8 Million oz.
2017 151.1 Million oz.
Estimated 2018 124.8 Million oz.
From the World Gold Council for 2018:
Retail investment in gold bars and coins posted annual growth of 4%. Coin demand surged to reach a five-year high of 236.4t, the second highest on record. Demand for gold bars held steady at 781.6t, the fifth year in succession of holding in a firm 780-800t range.
Central banks added 651.5t to official gold reserves in 2018, the second highest yearly total on record. Net purchases jumped to their highest since the end of US dollar convertibility into gold in 1971, as a greater pool of central banks turned to gold as a diversifier.
cagcrisp says
From the United States Mint American Silver Eagle Bullion Sales:
FY2015 47,870,000 oz. Sold
FY2016 42,446,000 oz. Sold
FY2017 23,100,000 oz. Sold
FY2018 13,837,000 oz. Sold
…SO…On a percentage basis the US still has a Large part of the Worlds Silver Bullion coin demand, however, it is decreasing y/y…

It has been a mystery to me why the 2012 S silver proof Kennedy costs so much. Can anyone explain why? The recent ones have lower mintages, yet sell for no where near the price of the 2012. Did someone corner the market? Are they all in “very strong hands”?
As far as this W penny, I wonder if it will also be in the silver proof set. I never buy the regular proof set.
cagcrisp says
As you can see from my Above post, on a worldwide basis, Demand for Silver coins and bars is Declining and Demand for Gold coins and bars is Increasing
Central Bank purchases of Gold in 2018 was the Highest in 50 years
The World is looking to diversify OUT of the USD and the alternatives for the EURO and Yen are not looking good
…Thus…
Gold is looking good in a time of Global Stagflation with the Golbal Debt.
Not just the U. S. Debt but Global Debt…

Can post 33 gold be “called in” by the gov?
Seems the blurring of lines between pm’s and coins could bite? eagles of Au and Ag seem more commodities than the “Art” coins of UHR, reverse proof, limited editions, etc. It would be nice to have a distinction made.
https://qz.com/1002767/gold-price-why-the-us-government-once-sued-a-nevada-casino-over-a-14-pound-solid-gold-rooster/
If central banks keep “stacking” Au, will there become a shortage run up of prices as the public clamors to get more?
IJTR says
Pre-33 gold seems to be plentiful even though FDR made it illegal to hold and govt supposedly melted all their coin holdings into bars. Stuff is all over the place today, mostly in NGC holders.
So other than the shipwreck recoveries, where did not t all come from? Nazi vault finds from Germany?
Barry says
It will be easier for them to nationalize private pensions rather than trying to round up the PM’s. This has already been done to some degree in other countries.
Jerry Diekmann says
Does anyone know when the reverse Pd coin is scheduled to be released? I couldn’t find it on the Mint’s product schedule. Also, will the design be the same as in 2018? That is what I suspect is the case, just a different finish.
Like cagcrisp has said – “more gimmicks” for the Mint to try and sell more coins.
Jerry Diekmann says
The proof W cent for 2019 reminds me of a similar gimmick back in 1996 when the Mint included an uncirculated “W” mint mark on the dime to commemorate 50 years of the Roosevelt dime. They sold 1.4 million of these special dimes, not unlike the mintage figures of the earliest “S’ mint uncirculated ATB quarters in 2012 and 2013. But that leaves the 2010 and 2011 ATB uncirculated quarters with no “S”mint marks as “orphans”. Well,no one ever said that logic or foresight was at the forefront of the Mint’s marketing programs.
Tony@GA says
The 2019 W penny – can’t wait to open the little packets and spend them into general circulation. That’ll be a rush for someone to find one.
Tony@GA says
I can’t wait to open those little plastic wrappers on the 2019 W penny and spend them into general circulation. Someone someday will feel like they’ve hit the lotto when they find one!

cagcrisp says

Yes. Design stays same. The finish can Not be the same as the prior year…

The Kennedy/Apollo 11 sets were Again Available this morning
Over 100 were Available
What surprises me is that everyone should have known after week 2 sales numbers were reported that these would Sell Out and yet people are clamoring for them After they go CU
These aren’t like the 2018 Proof Palladium that went CU in 6 minutes
For the Kennedy/Apollo 11 it’s been 24 days since Launch
That’s plenty of time to get one if you want one…
just another dave in pa says
I don’t think anyone is clamoring for these. There really doesn’t seem to be much demand for these Apollo coins although that may change when the July anniversary comes.
” The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum will commemorate the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission with a week-long “First Moon Landing Celebration” in July 2019.”
Comparing a product with 15k mintage to a product with 100k is not very informative. The Apollo engravings (8k) lasted all but a few minutes and that is a comparable offering. The pool of customers that buy directly from the mint seems to have reached a plateau. Dealers and flippers have seen a sharp decline but the collector base, while shrinking, seems rather steady.
cagcrisp says
@just another dave in pa says,”I don’t think anyone is clamoring for these.”
I Don’t just read MNB. And Yes they are clamoring for them on various sites.
“Comparing a product with 15k mintage to a product with 100k is not very informative”
I can see someone getting excited about opening sales back up for a coin that was gone in 6 minutes (15,000 of the 2018 Proof Palladium) and Not everyone had a chance to get one (or More)
This is Not the case with the Kennedy

I don’t see any demand for the pucks. I think the returns are from people who went and got one on ebay and cancelled their mint orders. I do think it will pick up a bit during the Summer around the anniversary.

I received the apollo half set yesterday with package error. I’m gald to hove picked it up for the kennedy mainly, the curved coin a nice bonus.
I’m awaiting the Au unc and after seeing the clads think the mint should have done something completely different with the Au offering a proff obverse and unc reverse. There is no reason to have a shiny footprint in sand/dust while the proof finish limited to everything within the boundary of the shield would have been very fitting. And resulted in a unique coin.

I see falling demand for silver coins in recent years as a bullish contrarian indicator—the majority of investors rarely time precious metal (or stock market) cycles correctly in order to maximize long term profits by buying low and selling high.
Lemming-like behavior by masses of unsophisticated and/or greedy precious metal and stock purchasers is characterized by heavy buying near market cycle peaks and getting shaken out (heavy selling ) near market cycle lows.
I would be wary of posters who constantly put forth their opinion that there is an historic, permanent disconnect between gold and silver pricing occurring.
Just because a theory is passionately and frequently espoused does not make it correct.

When or kids or friends ask about coins I suggest to set aside so much a year(not to exceed a $ or % of their liking) and buy one or a few coins of pm (limited mintage a plus) that they like. That way they will not be constantly checking the daily price, nor be disappointed when the coin goes up or down in value.

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore 2018 Uncirculated Five Ounce Silver Coin is down to 15 & the Voyageurs National Park 2018 Uncirculated Five Ounce Silver Coin Isdown to 75.. Estimate a mintage of about 16,800 for Apostle Islands and 16,650 for Voyageurs NP. Lower and lower mintages.
The 2019 Apollo 5oz will not sell out its max 100,000 mintage! If the Mint were to average 3000 coins per month till year end, we’d be looking at roughly 93,000. That’s a big if/tall order! I feel they’ll be hard pressed(NPI, haha) to sell much above 80,000, if that? Time will tell. BTW, I’m out on this offering. The October delivery date should have a negative impact and hurt overall sales IMO. I like the program/theme, just not that enamored, regarding the repetitive design. Buy what you like. Then more than likely, regardless of the decrease/increase in value, intrinsic or otherwise, you’ll enjoy for many years.

I don’t think sell outs are always a way to look at coins. I think mintage level versus long term demand is a better way. If the Mint came out with a gimmick coin and only sold 5K of them, people would go temporarily crazy but long term, if there was not a collector base for this gimmick coin, the price would fall. Like on the American Liberty gold coins that are still available, no price action on these but what about in 10 years?

The Populist government of Italy is floating the idea of selling some Gold Reserves to pay off some of Italy’s debt.
1. Italy is 3rd behind the U.S. and Germany in Central Bank Gold Reserves
2. Gold reserves for Italy is about 5% of Italy’s two trillion Euro public debt…

How much Gold does the U. S. Treasury have as of 01/31/2019 in relationship to the U. S. Debt Clock?
261,498,926.24 Fine Oz
Current Gold price ~ $1326.10
~ U.S. Treasury Gold Reserve = $ 346,773,726,088.19
U.S. Debt Clock ~ $ $22,024,215,997,836.00
…SO…U.S. Treasury Gold Reserves would pay off 1.6% of the U.S. Debt…
(And at the Current rate that would be ~ 4 months of burn rate)…

Re: 2012 Silver Proof Set – Someone recently asked why the Kennedy from this set was so expensive (and the set in general). Even though the total mintage that year was the same as it has been the past few years, the distribution of those sets is off. In 2010 and 2011 there were close to 600M silver proof sets sold. Then in January of 2013, the 2012 went sold out without warning. Normally sets stick around at least through the next spring after they come out, and they keep selling at a small but reasonable pace. Sells at that point were a tad under 400M and the big dealers had very limited stock. I actually went out and bought 10 from a big dealer that same day before they increased their price on the set. So the early and unexpected sell out left very few sets available and “tradeable” hands and most of the sets are in collector hands.
Eventually the price will probably even out, but that could take 10-15 years. A lot of collector sets sit in closets until the collector dies and then they finally hit the market again.
I keep asking the same questions about the 2009 P&D nickels. Someone has a huge hoard of those and even though they are not that rare (40M+) a roll of them sell for more than a roll of a 1938 nickel (19.5M).

I hope the 2019 W Proof Lincoln cent is also included with the silver proof set. If it is, I’ll get it that way since I still buy that set every year. If it’s only included with the clad sets, then I’ll probably just buy one on eBay while they’re plentiful and cheap. I can’t see buying the worthless clad proof set to get it. It should only be a few bucks to buy the penny on eBay. The mintage will be pretty high on it, especially if it’s included with the silver sets too. I wish the Mint wasn’t so secretive with product details on the schedule. We never get details about or pictures of products until a few days before they are released now.
I wonder if there will be a 2019 W Uncirculated Lincoln cent included with the U19 set?
Brad says
Excuse me, “19RJ” set. I never buy uncirculated sets anymore, so I never noticed that at some point they abandoned the “U” followed by the last two digits of the year coding system!

Didn’t the mint make “W” silver eagles in 2018? Where are they in the above report?
Does anyone have total “W” and “S” proof silver eagle mintages across all product lines: birthday, anniversary, limited edition proof sets, bulk sales, etc. Sure would be nice if the mint blog report actually reported true mintages for coin types.
