The procedures of the hearing screening included meatoscopy, followed by anamnesis with their mothers, in order to verify the presence, or not, of some RIHL, based on those considered by the Multiprofessional Committee on Hearing Health--COMUSA, in Portuguese [10].
After the questionnaires were returned the employees were sent to a department in an Audiology Clinic where basic audiological evaluations were carried out in an acoustic booth which included the following: Meatoscopy (otoscope made by Heine[R]), Tone Audiometry covering frequencies from 250 to 8000 Hz, Speaking Tests (audiometry, the Grason-Stadler[R] brand, model number GSI-61) and Imitanciometry (the equipment is from the Interacoustics[R] brand, model AT 235h).
The audiological status of patients was evaluated using meatoscopy. Afterwards, participants were administered MMSE questionnaires in Portuguese [16].
As is standard practice, all of the patients submitted to hearing tests were first submitted to anamnesis, meatoscopy, and tonal and vocal audiometry.
Meatoscopy: To check the presence of any foreign body that prevents the assessment.
The children were submitted to meatoscopy and the immitance test, in order to select those that presented normal mobility of the tympanic-ossicle system and acoustic reflexes, which were considered as an inclusion criteria of the sample.
The workers of the three groups underwent a general clinical examination, blood pressure measurement, meatoscopy, and tonal audiometry, and environmental monitoring was conducted.
Excluded from the research were patients with altered meatoscopy at the time of evaluation; with a history of middle ear infections; and who have other risk factors for hearing loss, among them: exposure to noise and/or ototoxic chemicals; severe cranial injury; history of infectious diseases; radiotherapy in head and neck and chemotherapy; family history of hearing loss.
The selected study subjects were teenagers from 7th and 8th municipal school grades who agreed in participating in this research, with the following inclusion criteria: cognitive skills to respond the evaluations, audibility thresholds compatible with normal hearing, meatoscopy with no alterations, absence of middle ear and TEOAEs present in both ears.
