I second reviewer LyP's sentiment: I also I enjoyed that this story involves Heculaneum. (Apparently like the author, I'm a sucker for less renowned yet entirely fascinating tidbits of world history.) Just like Book 1, "Death Among the Ruins" is an entirely witty, speedy read. For those who adore banter - of both the intellectual *and* bawdy varieties - that embroiders a story peppered with historical and well-crafted atmospheric details, and some mysteries to solve to boot, this is likely an excellent choice. Oh, and if you are one to carry some prejudice against those who practice 'the oldest profession,' don't bother with this series; it's not for you.
In summary: I was quite pleased by this follow-up to Book 1, I learned a lot about ancient Italy, and am very much looking forward to getting my hands on Book 3!

Death Among the Ruins (An Arabella Beaumont Mystery Book 2) Kindle Edition
In the second in Pamela Christie's witty, deliciously unconventional Regency mystery series, Arabella Beaumont—courtesan and sleuth—discovers that the pursuit of art can be a dangerous thing. . .
London's aristocrats pay handsomely for the company of courtesan Arabella Beaumont. Arabella, in turn, wisely invests her earnings in an art collection that will endure long after her legendary charms have faded. It's a decided blow, then, when her antiquities dealer is murdered before he can procure an item for which she paid dearly—a rare and provocative statue of Pan. Undaunted, Arabella decides to travel to Italy and locate the treasure herself.
What begins as a delightful caprice soon takes on a sinister aspect. Arabella's quest appears to have made her a donna fatale, causing death and mayhem wherever she goes. A thing of beauty may be a joy forever, but Arabella's own life could be cut scandalously short unless she can locate the statue, and uncover the heart of an ever-deepening mystery. . .
Praise For Death And The Courtesan
"A delectable treat for the historical mystery lover to savor. You will be left eager for Arabella's next adventure!" —Teresa Grant, author of The Paris Affair
"Historical mystery readers fond of arch and ribald takes on the genre will best appreciate Christie's debut." —Publishers Weekly

Editorial Reviews
From Booklist
Courtesan Arabella Beaumont returns for another zany adventure in Christie’s ribald Regency mystery series. After purchasing an expensive statue of Pan, Arabella is bereft when the statue is stolen. Meanwhile, her brother has inadvertently generated a rumor suggesting that he and his two sisters are involved in an incestuous relationship. Arabella gathers her siblings to go to Italy to find her statue. Instead, they are warned by everyone concerned to stop looking for it. A sword fight, encounters with pirates, and a mysterious new love interest all add to the fun in this diverting caper, which turns many of the Regency stereotypes upside down. --Amy Alessio

I checked this book out as an ebook from the library. I make it a rule to read every book I check out unless I absolutely cannot stand reading it. This book came close to that. Those are hours from my life I'm never getting back.
Don't get me wrong... the book wasn't TOTALLY badly written, but the premise of it from the beginning just wasn't very good in my opinion. I love mysteries. I love cozy mysteries. I love books with some love and sex in them. But I did NOT care for this book. I don't consider myself a goody-two-shoes, but I couldn't really LIKE Arabella or ANY of the characters in this book. Sorry I can't give it a better review... and, for the record, I'm cancelling the hold I had on the first book by this author, which wasn't available when I checked this one out. It may be better than this one. And I may have liked this one better, had I read the first book in the series first. But there are only so many hours left in my life to read, and I'm not using those hours on the other book in this series. sorry!

Belinda (Bunny, Signorina) Beaumont & Arabella Beaumont (Bell; courtesan, Signorina) had received an unpleasant letter from John Sonne (architect; Lincoln inn fields #13) telling the sisters the proprietor who was to sell them their ancient Phan bronze statue (Herculaneum; double phallus) from Italy had been killed & the statue was now missing or stolen.
The 2 girls, Charles Beaumont (brother; Toby), & Reverend John Kendrick (Rector of Effing; Vicar), were off across the ocean to Resina Italy to meet with Professor Teofilo Bergamini (PhD; history; university of Naples).
The entourage also later meet Father Terranova (priest; landlord) & his family.
Arabella was quite the Sherlock Holmes & kept her own CIN (Crime Investigation (inquiry) Notebook).
Arabella began to write 4 suspect clues & sketched the crime scene. At bedtime she wrote what words of wisdom the Professor Teofilo Bergamini had related to her.
Will Belinda & Arabella ever recover the Phan bronze statue?
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written mysterious suspenseful crime filled book. It was very easy to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. No grammar errors, repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make great turn of the century crime spoof movie (Sherlock Holmes), or mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Ok,I wanted a crime mystery and got two prostitutes roaming through the ruins looking for a statue First book in the series held some promise, this one annihilated it. So no more of those for me.

I loved the humor in this book. It was even easier to follow each of the characters. Better played out and I had thoroughly enjoyed the first book ❤️

I cannot believe the negative reviews of this book!
I absolutely and completely love this book! Personally, There's a lot of humor, very wittily done, and I love that. I love that the story involves Herculaneum (Pompeii is just so *done*). Great choice, Ms Christie! The nature of the statue, and its... endowment provides some terrific sprinklings of humor and just a dab of shocking. Just the perfect touch, and a terrific combination for a mystery.
Do yourself a favor and just read the first page provided in the Look Inside sample. From the end of the first sentence, I was completely captivated. I found myself thinking about the book at work! That's a great feeling! A fast and delightful read that kept me entertained and engaged. I was sad when it was over, and can't wait for the next one!!
I highly recommend this book. It's a lovely romp in Italy, with a bit of sex, a spot of mystery, and a grand foundation of humor. You can thank me later!

I enjoyed following Arabella's adventures in Italy as much or more than those in London! I hope, hope, hope there's another book to follow. Can't wait to see where Arabella goes next and what trouble she will get into ...
