Senate to Vote on Dark Money Resolution

The Senate will Vote Tuesday on a Resolution to Block a Treasury Department Policy that Reduces the Donor Disclosure Requirements for Nonprofits, according to Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX). “Tuesday I’m hearing the [Congressional Review Act] on the … identified-donors thing,” Cornyn said on Monday.

Introduced in September by Sens. Jon Tester (D-MO) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Resolution Overturns a Treasury Department change to Schedule B of IRS Form 990, which provides the Public Financial Information about a Nonprofit Organization.

The Policy Change allows Political Nonprofits to Withhold Names of Major Donors from the Internal Revenue Service.

Senate Republicans can Lose only One Vote on the Congressional Review Act (CRA) Resolution.

The Tool Congress is using to undo Regulations is known as the CRA, which allows it to Repeal Executive Branch Regulations.

In a Statement in September, Tester described the Resolution as Legislation to “protect our democracy and hold special interests accountable with transparency.”

UPDATE
The Senate Passed the Legislation on 12/12/2018, to Reverse a Trump Administration Policy Limiting Donor Disclosure Requirements for Political Nonprofits in a Rare Rebuke to the White House. In a 50-49 Vote, the Senate Approved a Resolution from Sens. Jon Tester (D-MO) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) that would Block the Recent Treasury Department Change to IRS Forms allowing Political Nonprofits to Avoid Listing some Donor Names.
