Thank you Steve for a wonderful interview with Ray Torto. His description of the Torto Wheaton Research workplace is accurate and brings back great memories. I owe everything to Ray's mentoring and leadership. He set an example of how to treat people in the workplace that should serve as a guide for others.

What Ray didn't mention in the interview is his personal generosity. I recall one example that explains it well. I was a young cocky upstart who moved from Florida to Boston with a family of five. I was working at TWR. We were just starting out and Boston was a very expensive place to live, leaving us pretty tight for cash. We made it work, buying a house that needed some work, and living inexpensively, especially when it came to avoiding restaurants. I wanted to do something nice as a treat for our anniversary. I asked around the office for recommendations for a nice restaurant and had several good recommendations. The day of the dinner, Ray casually asked what I had decided. He complimented my choice. That night, we splurged on appetizers, entrees, desert, wine, etc... I braced myself when I asked for the bill figuring it would wipe me out for several months. My wife and I were in tears when we got the bill. It was zero. The waiter explained. "Compliments and Happy Anniversary from Ray Torto."

Ray understood what was important to a young family person, was to take care of his family. After that, my wife never complained about my working at home after dinner, or going on business trips, as long as I was working for Ray Torto.
