  1. Throckmorton says

I note the 2018 version is offered by the USM for $1,640. I just purchased a NGC MS70 2018-W $50 AGE for $1,550.

    Crazy days.

  2. So Krates says

    Collector 10538 asks,

“Just to clarify, are you calling the Unc “W” Eagles “annoying, redundant, gimmicky” product?”

    Yes.

“Are you saying that both bullion and “W” are minted and handled exactly the same?”

No,not exactly, but probably very similarly. They claim they are hand fed (so fewer contact marks) which is why I say to use an MS70 bullion version to search for the imperceptible difference (apart from la doble ve)

  3. Collector 10538 says

The Mint claims to use “special” presses for Unc strikes. I have no reason to not believe that, but IF they are minting both “business” bullion and Unc “W” on these same presses to the same standard, then I understand the view of redundant and gimmick. There should be a clear difference between a business strike and an Unc for the premium.

  4. George of the Jungle says

Isn’t the “mintmark” enough of a difference? Look at the W mintmarked Quarters. Selling like rare and wonderful pieces of Gold.

    Declaration of Independence
    Engravings from the US Mint

“The Bureau of Engraving and Printing takes great pride in offering this exquisite and most cherished document to the people of the United States. May it serve as a reminder of the freedom that all Americans possess and the foundation on which it stands. This incredibly detailed engraved print is an exact reproduction of the original Declaration of Independence and is produced on parchment paper.

The Declaration of Independence is 26” x 31”, the largest hand engraved print ever produced by the BEP.

Accompanying this beautiful masterpiece is an attractive full color illustrated booklet presenting the history of the “People’s Document.” Each piece also includes a Certificate of Authenticity.”

    Imagine that.

At $199.95, I would say the Mint ( BEP) was “Very Proud”…

  13. John Q. Coinage says

Cag, that’s been around for years, as a gimmick they should put one REAL copy in with all the duplicates, a great Dec’O Independence hunt……

Will the 2017 gold be on sale in 2020… 2o2o1….beyond….?

  14. cagcrisp says

@John Q. Coinage says,”, that’s been around for years”

Thanks. I Obviously don’t keep up with BEP offerings. I can see where they will sell ALL they can for $199.95.

“Will the 2017 gold be on sale in 2020… 2o2o1….beyond….?

My Assumption would be that when the 2019 American Liberty is offered on August 15th, 2019, that they will cease offering the 2017 American Liberty, HOWEVER, that hasn’t always worked out that way with Other Gold…

  15. So Krates says

@ collector 10538 – Unfortunately the mint likes to obfuscate to some degree especially on this topic. In the last email the description read “specially adapted coining press”. Since they don’t mention multiple strikes or increased pressure, I assume they are referring to adapting the press to the “hand feeding” process.

@ George of the Jungle – No. The conjured mint mark is not enough for me. If it was on a circulating coin, then yes. If it had a different finish, then maybe.

I have the same issues and am even more prejudiced against the Burnished ASE… with it’s second rate packaging and inflated issue price. However, I do like finding the occasional straggler that sneaks into an old ASE roll. For anyone who thinks these are a great product, try selling a loose W Unc ASE to your LCS for more than a business strike. Unless you’ve got the 07/08 Rev variety, you’ll be holding that baby a while.
