One thing I miss is the monthly mintage figures that used to be posted on this site.
I know the chances of modern mintage circulation rarities is slim to none, but the little kid in me still can’t wait to see them.

The United States Mint Lost $21.2M in FY2018 on the numismatic side
The United States Mint had 19 price Increases in CY2019 on the numismatic side
The United States Mint Lost $6.9M in FY2019 on the numismatic side
The United States Mint has announced 54 price Increases in CY2020 on the numismatic side
IF it wasn’t for Covid-19 my Guesstimate was that the United States Mint would be profitable on the numismatic side in FY2020.
With Covid-19 I see No way the United States Mint will be profitable on the numismatic side in FY2020…

@ Jerry Diekmann says, “cagcrisp – the unemployment rate has reached 14%, which was the rate during part of the Great Depression (some years it was higher). And the market is up 455 points today on the news. This seems crazy. Am I missing something?”
The Federal Reserve has backstopped the bond market which has in turned backstopped the stock market.
IF it wasn’t for the Federal Reserve we would be looking at Silver in the $10 range.
LBMA Silver bottomed Thursday March 19, 2020 @ $12.005/ounce. Two business days later on Monday March 23, 2020, the Dow Industrials bottomed @18591.35.
Since the bottoms, Silver is Up 28.9% and the Dow Industrials are Up 30.9%
Why did the Dow Industrials go Up 455.43 points on the same day Unemployment rate was the Highest since 1940?
I’ve posted time and again that the Bond market is driving the bus. For the most part both Private and Public pension funds (and the Social Security Trust Fund and the Medicare Trust Fund) are Grossly underfunded for the Long Term.
At Some Point you have to get yield Somewhere and you either go into equities or you take on Additional risk in the Bond market (Social Security and Medicare are legally handcuffed in what they can and can’t do).
So far equites have been the choice of Wall Street vs. bonds.
It’s all about Risk vs. Reward.
I would rather own Boeing (BA) stock vs. the $25B of bonds they just sold
For my part Wall Street is Way ahead of Main Street and I don’t see a W, V, U or Nike Swish recovery.
I see Years Long L recovery (at Best)…
Larry says
@ cagcrisp – the stock market makes absolutely no sense to me. How is it possible, to drive around any town, see all the businesses shut down, and believe the earnings of all these companies are going to be good any time in the next couple of years? I was always under the impression that earnings drive the market.
With so much bad news, it just seems inconceivable that the market can be going up as it has been.
I have heard it said that the Fed is driving the market, and never fight the Fed. But even the Fed’s resources are not infinite, and I feel there is a tidal wave of pressure building up that even the Fed won’t be able to overcome, unless they start directly buying equities (if they haven’t already done that) and the there goes capitalism.
I know that sometimes the market can do crazy things, but this market feels like it is fixed.

There goes capitalism the day everyone cashed a $1,200 stimulus check or $600 Federal unemployment check.
“But even the Fed’s resources are not infinite”
I agree it’s Not infinite but my Guesstimate is that the Federal Reserve will add an additional $4T to it’s balance sheet before this is over.
” How is it possible, to drive around any town, see all the businesses shut down, and believe the earnings of all these companies are going to be good any time in the next couple of years? ”
My Guesstimate is that a Lot on Main Street will go bankrupt before this is over and anti-trust laws will enable M&A activities that would have never have been considered 6 months ago.
“I know that sometimes the market can do crazy things, but this market feels like it is fixed.”
So…The Dow Industrials being up 30.9% is crazy and Silver being Up (without earnings or yield) 28.9% is Not crazy…hmmm…

Anyone have any idea how I can get the IRS to give me my ~ $25,,000 in Tax Refunds from 3 years?
This is not Gift Money / Freebie Money, Welfare Money. This represents MY MONEY ROBBED from me by a Federal Gang of Thieves.
They say sorry, you aren’t who you say you are. You’re an impostor trying to scam a refund by identity theft.
Funny but they had no problems Taxing my money at a 30% rate. But they say I’m not the owner of my Refund?
I think the Ghetto scum at the place are into outright Theft.
Any level of Politician might be helpful ? Might be my way to get help.

Got screwed by one of my favorite places to eat. Souplantation/Sweet Tomatoes went down the other day. Announced not reopening all 97 stores. I bought a gift card a while back and still had a few bucks on there 🙁
They foresaw buffet/self serve dining not being feasible and would lose more than the current $1 million per week being shut down if they reopened with some sort of to go service. They were so clean, fresh, healthy and good value. What a shame. Think I should file a claim?
I did hear quite a few pitches to help support local businesses by purchasing gift certificates/card for future use to keep them going during the shutdown.. I guess if the purchase was recent and they fail you could probably do a CC chargeback.
DaveSWFL says
SoKrates,
Don’t blame Sweet Tomatoes….they did everything they could to try to reopen, but the Coronavirus PoPo will not allow buffet service – even if you want it. The gvmnt is now ruling most everything and our freedoms are being rapidly squeezed away.
I feel your pain – I have over $300 in Sweet Tomatoes gift cards which are now useless. The company is bankrupt – just the start of a long list of bankruptcies to come.

@cag: re Social Security: I fully expect the minimum retirement age to be raised to 65 or so and full retirement age to be raised to around 70 for those currently under age 45 in the next 4 years, not fast enough to “save” the system. Tax increases or other revenue streams will have to be dedicated to Social Security soon. As to the Social Security System purchasing equities, that would lead to the Fed guaranteeing the value of equities as the debt moves ever upward….. when does the rest of the world stop accepting the US Dollar as the reserve currency for international commerce? I am very concerned about the ever increasing national debt with no plan to deal with the debt. I do agree that “recovery” will be a long time coming.

Keep in mind that the majority of people dying by Covid or “DBC” are older folks collecting social security no more. The numbers are going to result in a slight reduction of Social Security payments for the next decade. Combined with the increased full retirement age the system will probably balance out just fine.

Seems to me that this Covid19 Cloud was a Military Act. Just about as effective as a Nuclear Pulse Attack by a Chinese Puppet to the east of Japan. The accusations are flying freely. But no Military retaliation justified. There goes the economy of the great ISA.

As I pointed out Above the Social Security Trust Fund currently has $2.9T. By 2035 The Social Security Trust Fund will have ZERO dollars.
That’s $0.0000000
$2.9Trillion gone in the next 14 years
After 2034 you’ll get 76% of scheduled benefits Unless Congress acts
SO…Yes “not fast enough to “save” the system”
“Tax increases or other revenue streams will have to be dedicated to Social Security soon.”
The Trump administration wants to suspend FICA taxes for the remainder of CY2020 so that will just compound the problem if enacted.
“when does the rest of the world stop accepting the US Dollar as the reserve currency for international commerce?”
Whenever a stronger currency steps forward and replaces the USD. The last time we got these prices for Gold the USD was Extremely Weak. Currently the USD is Extremely Strong vs. the past 17 years.
“I am very concerned about the ever increasing national debt with no plan to deal with the debt.”
I’m Currently Not concerned about the national debt as long as the debt doesn’t cause inflation.
And it hasn’t
All you have to do is watch the Bond market to see whether we’re concerned about inflation.

Covid 19 will have a Negative impact on the Social Security Trust Fund because ~89% of the Trust Fund is currently funded by FICA taxes and FICA taxes are not being collected for millions of laid off employees.

GLD (Gold ETF) vs. SLV (Silver ETF) YTD?
How about 25.69%?
How about $25,689.58 on a $100,000.00 investment?
GLD 12/31/2019 = $142.90
GLD 05/08/2020 = $160.42
A $100,000.00 investment in GLD (Gold ETF) on 12/31/2019 would be worth $112,260.32 as of May 8, 2020
SLV 12/31/2019 = $16.68
SLV 05/08/2020 = $14.44
A $100,000.00 investment in SLV (Silver ETF) on 12/31/2019 would be worth $86,570.74 as of May 8, 2020
$112,260.32 for GLD minus $86,570.74 for SLV = $25,689.58
IF I use Spot price of Gold and Spot price of Silver, I come up with $25,400.56 ($112,269.25-$86,868.69)
The ^ variance between the performance of GLD vs. SLV are Extreme and I do Not expect that to continue…

cagcrisp – thank you for your comments. But I don’t see the bond market doing anything. Who is going to buy Treasury bills, notes, and bonds when the rate being paid is only slightly above 0%? Corporate bonds may pay higher rates, but I believe there will be quite a few corporations that will default on their debt payments. A long way to recovery? yes, indeed. The stock market high of 1929 was not reached again until 1954, 25 years later, almost a generation, and that included a postwar boom economy.

I agree, which is why I said ‘probably’. That leaves enough room for doubt. Once new rules are in place to prevent anyone with a net worth over $5,000.000.00 from collecting social security and the minimum retirement age reaches 77 most people would be happy to get 76%. Hecla Mining Company is listed as “Founded in 1891, Hecla Mining Company is a leading low-cost U.S. silver producer with operating mines in Alaska, Idaho and Mexico, and is a growing gold producer with an operating mine in Quebec, Canada.”
One of the bullet points was the following:
“Issued $475 million of senior notes due in 2028 replacing $506.5 million senior notes due in 2021, reducing long term debt and extending its maturity.”
What Hecla chose to Not bullet point was the fact that the the $506.5 million of notes due in 2021 had an interest rate of 6.875%…
…And…
The $475 million issued this past quarter has an interest rate of 7.250%…

@cag: who was the purchaser of $42b in treasury bonds with a 0.23% yield? The FED or BlackRock? An entity with a big line of credit at 0.00% interest with the FED? Friendly foreign power like China? There seems little to be gained by purchasing sovereign debt at 0.23%. Of course, purchases are basing the decision to purchase in part, expecting no inflation. With 30% unemployment I expect deflation at some point……of course, US Treasuries are much preferable to EU Debt…..

It was Neither. BlackRock is the facilitator for the Fed purchases. What BlackRock is going to purchase is corporate debt, not sovereign debt.
Rule of thumb is that U. S. citizens buy the short end of the curve and pension funds and insurance companies purchase the long end of the curve.
Following that rule of thumb, my Guess is that it was United States citizens.

cagcrisp – yes, you can make some money on bonds if the rates decrease, but happens when the rate goes to 0% or even negative? To me I can’t see anyone buying bonds with a 0% rate or negative rate and thinking they can make money with the rates going lower. At some point the end is reached and nobody will buy any of these bonds. Then what happens? The government can’t sell its paper so it does the other thing it can do – print more paper. That result will lead to inflation big-time, maybe even hyperinflation. I don’t see a happy ending to this story. I feel bad for the younger generations – my children and grandchildren. it’s like what happened to my parents’ generation – coming of age just as the Great Depression hit.
