GAME REVIEW: RICO (Nintendo Switch)

I once made a short film when I was about 15 years old. I called the special agent ‘Rico’, so yes, I can say I have a special connection to this game.

No RICO is not a game about a special agent, but it comes close. Sort of. You literally kick in doors and start shooting everything you see. And yes, it’s a blast!

There are different objectives to fulfil. Sometimes you need to collect evidence, diffuse bombs or destroy assets. I found diffusing bombs to be the most challenging objective, since I always died and don’t play well under time pressure.

There are a lot of different enemies with different abilities. You also get various guns to shoot with. The shotguns are the best and you can really see enemies flying through the room and that feels great! Especially the ‘bullet time’ is awesome. When you kick in the door you start shooting in slow-motion-Matrix-style and it’s great!

You don’t need to clear every room, so if you think you’re going to die, you better get back to the door you first entered from and finish. ‘What’s so bad about dying? I can just restart the level?’ Well, no. If you die, you can’t play in that arm of the sting anymore, so it’s a real bummer if you die with like one enemy remaining after shooting for half an hour.

It’s very satisfying to shoot everyone and get new guns. RICO feels very responsive and the gun sounds are great as well. You can play solo and co-op. The solo mode is great for a bit of gaming fun on the couch, but if you have someone to play co-op with, you really should, since you can do it split screen or online.

RICO can take some time to load and doesn’t look like the best game graphically, but it’s an awesome couch-shooter that will give you hours of fun alone or with your friends.
