The Happiness Training Plan

presented by Dr Chris Johnstone and Miriam Akhtar

The Happiness Training Plan is a self-help audio programme based on positive psychology, the science of happiness & wellbeing. The audiobook is designed to have an anti-depressant effect, to help you raise and recover your well-being. It condenses what is known about increasing happiness into 12 easy-to-follow tracks, which each last around 5 minutes. The strategies draw on scientific research together with the presenters’ own experiences of overcoming depression. The programme was launched at the 2008 University of Bristol Happiness Lectures. In 2012 the CD became available as a downloadable MP3. In 2017 it became download-only.

It is recommended that you listen to the whole audiobook (just over 1 hour) and then choose 1 or 2 strategies to practise at a time.  We’ve heard of people listening to the tracks on their commute to work, while exercising and walking the dog! You can even use buyessayscheap.org while you are listening to it. A doctor, who recommends the programme to his patients, listens in his car. You can listen to these tips while your assistant at a fast cheap essay writing service works on your assignment. If you're writing about depression, ensure to seek help from the top writing service.

PERMA +

The live weekly webinar is at 7.30pm GMT in the UK (1130 US PT, 230pm US ET, 830pm Europe CET) which you can also replay at any time to suit you. Plus there’s access to online resources, including summary tutorials, audio, video and a group discussion forum. What makes this course unique is that you will be coached by two of the leading names in European positive psychology.

Session 1. Positive Emotions: We start with ‘hedonic well-being’ – the feel-good factor of positive emotions. The ‘broaden & build’ theory explains how positive emotions not only feel good but do us good too. Plus we explore a range of practices that grow positivity such as savouring and gratitude.

Session 2. Engagement: This session introduces ‘eudaimonic well-being’, the other dimension of authentic happiness. We explore two forms of engagement. ‘Flow’ is the state of complete absorption, of being ‘in the zone’ and strengths – the inner resources that make up the positive you.

Session 3. Relationships: Research has shown that the happiest people on the planet have good close relationships and active social lives. Humans need a sense of connection and belonging for well-being. This session explores ways to nourish our relationships and build networks of mutual support for interpersonal happiness.

Session 4. Resilience: We’ve added an extra R for Resilience, a core area in positive psychology, to help you stay strong. This session looks at how to deal with emotional dips, apply the ABC of flexible thinking, cultivate realistic optimism and bounce forward from adversity.

Session 5. Meaning: What gives life meaning & purpose? We explore this deeper happiness, ways to find to discover your purpose and consider how spiritual practices can be used to promote mental health.

Session 6. Mindfulness: We’ve added the M for Mindfulness as this practice is a proven natural antidepressant, with benefits not only to mood, but also to memory, focus, relationships and health. The session introduces practices that are simple to apply in as little as a few minutes a day.

Session 7. Achievement: How to make change and make progress in your life. We explore optimistic thinking and the science of goals.

Session 8. Physical: We’ve added the P to reflect the importance of the body-mind connection to mental health. We look at how body-focused practices can form an essential part of an integrated Positive Psychology wellbeing programme.

Catch up with the Happiness Lectures

From 2006 to 2010 the Bristol Happiness Lectures acquired the reputation for being inspiring events with leading speakers on the science of wellbeing. Developed by Dr Chris Johnstone and hosted by the University of Bristol, contributors included Oliver James (2008), Ilona Boniwell (2007), Raj Persaud (2006), Phil Hammond (2010) and Miriam Akhtar (2010). In 2014 the Bristol Happiness Lectures metamorphosed into The Happiness Lectures Online. The subject of the first event was Sustainable Happiness – how to plant, cultivate and grow happiness with staying power with a special guest Mark Williamson from Action for Happiness.

The 2015 Happiness Lectures was on The Positive Psychology of Love & Purpose. Here’s a link to replay the webinar.Love is a peak experience and our supreme positive emotion, while having a purpose lends a depth to the quality of our lives – a deep sense of meaning and well-being. When the two come together you have the ingredients for a rich and satisfying life which is more than the sum of its parts. It is a happiness with bandwidth. Love and Purpose come together as passion. The engagement of the heart is like the wind in your sails. Love gives you something to act for.

Other webinars we’ve hosted include Positive Psychology for You, Me and UsHow to be a Positive Psychology Practitioner, What is Positive Psychology  and The Natural Anti-Depressant.
