Exhibition: Exodus by Allan Simba, Feb. 8 – Mar. 3 2024 @ Alliance Française.

Opening: February 8, 2024

Venue: Alliance Française

Time: 6.30 PM

About

Allan Simba holds a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Kenyatta University. His work is a result of continuous experimentation. He uses an eclectic mix of techniques distilled into a style referred to as ‘furism’. This was coined by the French curator, Floréal Duran, to describe Allan’s art as influenced by the fury of living.

The artworks in ‘Exodus’ are a conceptual observation of the world in flux. The constantly changing view of ourselves, having to understand and re-understand us and our interaction with our environment. The works symbolize the ephemeral nature of our views.

Opening: Wednesday, 24 January 2024
Venue: Alliance Française de Nairobi

About

This photo and video exhibition immerses us in the multiple facets and paths of self-accomplishment in Kenya today.

It captures, visually and through personal stories, the quest for self-accomplishment as tied to questions of wealth, power, authority and respectability. It shows a variety of expressions for the art of being accomplished, from marrying and raising children to engaging in community work to investing in business, art, or politics. Being an accomplished man or woman requires navigating multiple, conflicting values and expectations situated at the intersection of ethnicity, race, class, age, generation, gender, and religion.

Exhibition: ‘Reflections of War: Agony of Displacement’, Paintings, Monotypes and Prints by Rashid Diab, Nov. 25 2023 – Jan. 14 2024 @ One Off Contemporary Art Gallery.

Venue: One Off Contemporary Gallery

Time: 3.30-6 PM

Exhibitions Run:
Saturday 25 November 2023 – 14 January 2024

Gallery open:
Tuesday through Saturday, from 10am – 5:00pm
Sunday, from noon – 5:00pm

About

Diab has painted migrants most of his career, though tragically, he recently found himself with first hand knowledge of being evacuated and becoming a refugee. He lost all his worldly possessions in the fighting which engulfed Khartoum.  Now living in Madrid, Diab’s latest works have a new depth and context.  In his own words; “…my main subject, it remains the delicate situation of women; a constant theme of mine for almost 20 years now. Women bearing the brunt of migration, navigating the infinite landscape of Sudan whilst the men kill each other. Husbands and sons are lost and the women must support the full responsibility of the future and the sustenance of their family. For me they are a symbol, an icon of our diversity, of our social variety and our unity. Their colourful and patterned aesthetical garments (toub), their curves and gestures, their stance when faced with the flat land, lost and in an insecure space. The explosion of violence always leaves our women more vulnerable to the most putrid and heinous acts’.  These works carry a new poignancy, each figure portrayed with the body language of grief, not only for the subject to bear but also for the artist to use in expressing his own desolation.  There is a tremendous sadness in many of these works, whilst they remain hauntingly beautiful .

The show, ‘Reflections of War: Agony of Displacement’ comprises a huge range of work Diab has produced since his evacuation, including black and white prints relating to the war, oil paintings of the more iconic Diab genre and Monotypes.

Exhibition by Prof. Dr. Pilkington Ssengendo & Geoffrey Mukasa, Jul. 9 – Aug. 27 2023 @ Red Hill Art Gallery.

Red Hill Art Gallery is honoured to present an exhibition of two prominent artists from Uganda;

| Professor Dr Pilkington Ssengendo (1942 – 2015) |

 | Geoffrey Mukasa (1954 – 2009) |

Both artists, in their own respective way, have made significant contribution to the Visual Arts in Uganda and subsequently East Africa.

The exhibition is on view daily until 27th August 2023.

About

Professor Pilkington Ssengendo (1942 – 2015)
Pilkington Ssengendo was born in 1942 in Kampala. He studied in the early 1960’s visual art and sculpture at Makerere University and obtained a Diploma, Masters and PHD Degree in Fine Art. He started lecturing at the University in 1983 and was from 1992 to 2003 the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Art at the Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. He was the initiator of the PHD programmes in Industrial and Fine Art at Makerere University
In the 1960’s, Elimo Njau, a Tanzanian artist and Lecturer in Fine Art at the Makerere University became an important Mentor to Ssengendo’s views on art.

‘In Elimo Njau, Ssengendo met a mentor who guided him on a journey of artistic self-discovery’
(Prof Kyeune – a former student of Professor Ssengendo and later a Lecturer at the University).
(Elimo Njau (90 years) and his wife Philda Njau are the owners and Directors of Paa Ya Paa Art Centre, Nairobi.)
Professor Ssengendo remained reserved to the teaching syllabus of the former (British) Deans of the University, who were, in his view, “neglecting African values and culture for the sake of European Modernity”.

‘Ssengendo became the young voice of dissent in a largely conformist academic environment’ (Prof. Kyeune).
In his work Professor Ssengendo portrays his people, his culture and his African environment in a unique style that freely explores colour, perspective, intricate lines and cubist patterns, including natural materials, jute, bark cloth and beads. He tells the story of a rich and vibrant culture.
Ssengendo created a body of visual artworks which critically assess and re-evaluate the aesthetic value and meaning inherent in the East African traditional cultures – modernist art of cultural identity.

“He is one of the unsung heroes of Uganda. When Uganda was in turmoil, most sane people left the country but he was one of the few people who stayed behind to let the candle continue to burn,
(Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, outgoing Makerere University Chancellor at the funeral of Professor Ssengendo in 2015)

Geoffrey Mukasa (1954 – 2009)
Geoffrey Mukasa was born in 1954 in Kampala. He was a descendent of one of Uganda’s most prominent and historic political figures, Sir Apollo Kaggwa (1864-1927), who was appointed Prime Minister of Buganda from 1890 to 1926. Geoffrey spent part of his childhood in the privileged environment of the palace of the Buganda Kingdom.

He studied Fine Art at the University of Lucknow in India from 1978 to 1980 and graduated with a Bachelor of Art.

The influence of MF Hussain – one of the most celebrated Indian artists of the 20th century, executing bold, vibrantly coloured narrative paintings in a modified cubist style – can be seen both in Mukasa’s subject matter and his technique.

When he came back to Uganda in 1981, he worked as a graphic designer with the Ministry of Information and Uganda Television. During this time he continued to develop his talent for drawing and painting. He worked together with artist friends – the late Romano Lutwama, Fabian Mpagi and Eli Kyeyune – who were some of Ugandan master painters in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

For over 20 years he was a full-time artist and found his own identity in his artworks. He was well known in Uganda and abroad.

Geoffrey Mukasa passed on in 2009 at the age of 55.

All the artworks in this exhibition are part of the Gallery’s private Collection.

Exhibition: Soi: The Three Chapters – An Exhibition of Paintings by Ancent, Michael and Malli Soi, Jun. 24 – Jul. 23 2023 @ One Off Contemporary Art Gallery.

Opening: June 24, 2023

Venue: One Off Contemporary Art Gallery

Exhibitions Run: Until July 23, 2023
Gallery open: Tuesday through Saturday, from 10am – 5:00pm and Sunday, from noon – 5:00pm

About

SOI: The Three Chapters; paintings from three generations within the Soi Dynasty. From the dancing animals of Ancent Soi, along with his beautifully detailed anthropological record of the Maasai and Kamba culture, to the saucy and politically incorrect acrylics of his son Michael and ending with the beautifully observed,  honest paintings of his fifteen year old daughter Malli, the exhibition spans the generations.  Three distinct styles, three diverse frames of reference but with a curiously strong thread which runs down through the generations.

Curated by Thom Ogonga, the show is a fascinating and beautiful vignette of one family’s view of their culture, its influences and their immediate surroundings.

Simultaneous Exhibitions: ‘When I Think of My Mum’ by Mika Obanda & ‘An Exhibition of Wooden Sculpture’ by Baldy Osborne, May 27 – Jun. 18 2023 @ One Off Contemporary Art Gallery.

Time: Noon – 4 PM

Until June 18, 2023.

About

One Off Contemporary Art Gallery is delighted to be hosting Mika Obanda’s first solo show featuring a narrative in the form of a letter to his Mother, depicted in painstaking eggshell mosaic. The works offer a charming record of everyday life, in and around his home area. An early distinction for Obanda was having one of his works chosen by the GoDown Art Centre team for presentation to Dr. Jill Biden on her recent visit to Nairobi.

In the Loft Gallery, we will host another exhibition of impressive wood sculptures by Baldy Osborne. The workmanship and finish on these pieces is extraordinary and this exhibition offers collectors a chance to pick up some beautiful three dimensional pieces at a very fair price.
