This is definitely a recipe I'll use! We love chili cheese dogs. My husband is a devoted fan of Sonic's foot long chili cheese dog too. I like to experiment a bit because I love onions, cheese & relish on my hot dog. Thank you for always giving us a great newsletter with great, practical recipes.

Tina - did you and your family prefer this recipe over your old reliable coney recipe

This is a chili sauce for chili dogs. Coney dogs and chili dogs are not the same thing. Coney sauce is different and more of just a savory meat sauce.

Having lived in Oklahoma City for some years; I Always loved the A&W footlong coney / chili cheese dogs; piled with the works. Moved to Texas, and Oh, how I miss not eating at an A & W. Chili sauce was piled on your hot dog to where it had to be eaten with a fork. Eaten with side order of French Fries with sauce poured on top.
Your hot dogs should reach an internal temperature at least 140°F.
When I make chili; I will take the left-overs; thicken it up a bit, add some other ingredients, celery seed, cumin, just a pinch of sugar etc.; letting it simmer for about 30 min. and use it as my sauce for hot dogs.
