Awesome Assam 
First, it is a fine introduction to a part of India most of us knew little about. Assam, the land of the mighty Brahmaputra that figures so prominently in Indian lore of old, is not widely known today. But, for our lucky readers, the gap has now been filled, thanks to masterful exploration and exposition by star-team reporter Rajiv Malik and photographer Thomas Kelly. Here, we discover a land and a people with a big heart and a beautiful spirit. The state's 31 million people comprise hundreds of tribal, ethnic, linguistic and religious communities speaking 45 languages—all apparently thriving and living in harmony. Especially notable is that, at the heart of it all, Hinduism has remained strong and flourishing. “Awesome Assam” (the article is aptly named) is a microcosm of the world as it should be. And, good news again, there's more to learn about this magical place. The current report is but the first of two. This one focuses on the capital, Guwahati, and its surroundings. The next, "Assam: Land of Devotion," appearing in the upcoming issue, covers Dibrugarh, the tea country and Majuli island. This important article was subsidized by the Production Fund. True to Hinduism Today's mission, it informs Hindus about one another worldwide, showing that Hinduism is indeed a venerable, ancient, enduring religion in renaissance—one that has the power to uplift individuals, families and communities, and inspire them to live sensible and satisfying lives.
