New Yorkers see higher number of soiled subway cars in NYC: Report

Riders of New York City’s subway system are starting to see higher numbers of filthy and even excrement-covered train cars as traffic picks back up.

Internal reports from within the Metro Transit Authority catalogs the trash, grime, and human waste that account for a 27% year-over-year increase in the number of soiled cars since May of last year, according to the New York Daily News.

MTA crews reported at least 133 different incidents of soiled cars in May of this year, up from the 105 reported in May 2020, the outlet reported. Crews had begun sanitizing trains each night earlier that month beginning on May 5 due to the coronavirus after Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the “unprecedented” decision to close subways in the city from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. for cleaning.

“Sometimes you got to switch cars because the pee smell gets so bad,” local Uber driver Mehdi Chowdhuri said. “And in the mornings, it’s messy. You’ll see coffee spilled all over the floor.”

The internal reports reveal that many of the dirty incidents involve homeless riders.

“You’re seeing a lot more homeless people with a lot more garbage than earlier in the pandemic,” rider Henry Brito said.

One report described a homeless man “covered in feces” who had “defecated on himself and the train’s seats” while on board one train. Crews had to remove all passengers from the train in order to clean it.

Another report describes a train car “heavily soiled with blood” from a man bleeding heavily. Police reportedly said the man told them that he had fallen asleep and was awoken by someone punching him in the face.

One train operator logged a report detailing how a man urinated on his cab door, and another detailed the presence of used syringes.

“Incidents like this are unfortunate,” Metro Transit Authority spokesman Andrei Berman told the New York Daily News. “They’re unsanitary for our customers and deeply unfair and disturbing for transit cleaners. They’re also a reminder of the need for more mental health outreach and social service support in the city and throughout the system.”

The Washington Examiner reached out to the MTA for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
