North Korea warns US of ‘very grave situation’ in response to Biden speech

North Korea promised the United States will face a “very grave situation” after President Joe Biden described the country as a threat before a joint session of Congress.

“His statement clearly reflects his intent to keep enforcing the hostile policy toward the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] as it had been done by the U.S. for over half a century,” said Kwon Jong Gun, a senior North Korean Foreign Ministry official.

In his speech, Biden referred to North Korea as a threat to national security — a line the senior adviser described as a “big blunder” and said would cause the U.S. to find itself “in a very grave situation.”

“It is certain that the U.S. chief executive made a big blunder in the light of the present-day viewpoint,” Kwon said, suggesting the North Korean administration would pressure the U.S. to reconsider their relationship. “Now that the keynote of the U.S. new DPRK policy has become clear, we will be compelled to press for corresponding measures, and with time the U.S. will find itself in a very grave situation.”

The senior adviser did not provide any further details to clarify the comment.

The White House has not responded to the comments but elaborated days earlier that the Biden administration would differ stylistically from both the “grand bargain” tactics used by the Trump administration and the “strategic patience” used by the Obama administration.

Former President Donald Trump was heavily criticized for seeking open lines of communication with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un. The two leaders also held a historic meeting where the two discussed denuclearization and a potential peace agreement between North Korea, South Korea, and the U.S. At times, the two leaders were complimentary of one another, and, at times, they were openly critical.

Former President Barack Obama held a more distant relationship with the country and its leader instead of opting to use international pressure and sanctions from the United Nations to coerce cooperation.

However, the Biden administration will use a “calibrated, practical approach that is open to and will explore diplomacy with the DPRK and to make practical progress that increases the security of the United States, our allies and deployed forces,” according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

“If the Trump administration was everything for everything, Obama was nothing for nothing, this is something in the middle,” an unidentified senior Biden administration official told the Washington Post.

The White House has announced that Biden will host South Korean President Moon Jae-in on May 21. An announcement on Biden’s approach to North Korea is expected at that time.
