NYC businesses won’t survive coronavirus lockdowns, local destruction: IAC’s Barry Diller

“New York is a weird place to be around” during the coronavirus pandemic, IAC chairman Barry Diller told FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo on “Mornings with Maria” on Thursday.
“It’s devastating because you just drive anywhere, walk anywhere and you see local destruction,” he added.
Diller also noted that “it is almost impossible” for businesses to survive in New York City following the coronavirus closures and the violence sparked by protests after the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in Minneapolis police custody.
During the unrest over the summer, looters broke into New York City stores, stole merchandise and caused destruction.
IAC, which owns media and Internet brands, is headquartered in New York City. Diller told host Maria Bartiromo that on Labor Day, when the company’s headquarters was reopened, the 750 employees were given the option to come back to the building and only about 5% returned to the office.
“Truthfully, no one comes,” Diller said.
“If you give people the choice, generally, they’re going to say, ‘No. If I’m getting full pay, I am working at home doing whatever I want,’” he added. “What could be better? So that’s true for all offices in New York.”
Diller went on to say that “New York’s not going to get back again until we get clear signals that you can go about without taking these extreme precautions.”
“We’ve got to get Broadway back,” he continued. “Broadway supports [a] huge amount of small businesses and all sorts of derivatives that are just idle.”
He went on to say that “so much of the city” is currently idle and “it is not sustainable.”
“It can’t go on for nine months, which is one of the predictions, is that you won’t get theater back, Broadway back for one year from today,” Diller said. “That’s devastating.”
Diller stressed that “New York needs a plot.”
“Thank God schools are starting again, but will they stay open?” he asked.
“Every day it’s just kind of a drip drive of various scares that is just inhibiting life and at a point, [we] got to get used to where we are, but we’ve got to get used to the risks, and we’ve got to take some risks, particularly people who are not vulnerable and get back to full life.”

mtman: Well yes, and the old ways of politics have hit a dead end. We must use muscle to consequence the bad guys and reward the good guys. And if the bad guys complain, that’s good news for us, because our consequences are working. Bad guys are SUPPOSED to complain. If they don’t complain, we must try something else.
And the other huge Trump thing is the strong and widespread use of financial consequences. In years past, banking was too paper-based and slow moving to specifically sanction some jerk in Iran. But now Trump / Mnuchin together can target that single bad guy, and block him from doing bad stuff to the USA.
And as the State Dept. spox said just recently, “If necessary we will sanction whole countries”.
We need to keep doing this ‘Trump Doctrine’, long after he leaves office.

Connect the dots. The Left supports any policy that creates more dependency on govt. They’ve already proved it. How many businesses turned down the govt’s payroll support funds over the past 6 months. Few if any. If Biden wins and Dems takes back the Senate, this country will move even closer to looking and functioning like Communist China. It wont matter whether you like it or not. The number of active cases in the US is 7,411,716 with 209,720 deaths for a mortality rate of 2.8%.
And in a country of over 300,000,000 figures out to an infection rate of 2.5%.

Nothing will ever be back to normal as long as President Trump buys into this mask and social distancing business. New York City has had numerous predictions off collapse and destruction. The 1960s and 70s NYC was going down the sewer with the porn takeover. The 1980s was a time of collapse when NYC was not going to recover from the crime wave. The 1990s NYC was not going to survive the continued crime wave, then the city cleanup under Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani. NYC was not going to survive the terrorist attacks. NYC was not going to survive the ocean flooding of New Moons and high tide. NYC was not going to survive the coming ice age. NYC was not going to survive the coming Global Warming and ocean water rise that would completely cover Manhattan’s skyscrapers. NTC was not supposed to survive the occupation by King George’s troops during the Revolution. It could not possible survive October 1929 or 2008. And so many, many more New City Cannot Survive scenarios.
Yet, New York City is still there, muddling through as NYC has since the founding. Doomsayers were wrong, including Al Gore, Hollywood actors, Bill Nye The Science Guy who is actually an electrical engineer and comedian, the Clintons, and so many others. But, history and Jerry Seinfeld say New York City will be just fine. So, yes, I will believe Jerry Seinfeld before I believe Barry Diller or any other expert of anything.

If you really want the pulse of reality, turn to people who make their livings pretending. Yes, thespians and related “performance fields” are exactly where I turn to when I want to better understand the deep, intellectual topics that they couldn’t pass in school, but now profess to be experts in because “they’re famous.”

Ireland Baldwin, the deeeeply talented spawn of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, was mauled, mugged, and robbed in broad daylight, on a Sunday morning. Note that while Ireland is a big enough “star” to have her own Wiki article, this attack is curiously not mentioned. I Have No Idea Why (TM). If you google it, however, there are tons of stories, including pictures of her black eye from being punched in the face as she was robbed. Nice. That’s not upsetting at all, right?
This past weekend Rick Moranis, an actor who has appeared in a great many things, was randomly attacked on the Upper West Side for having the audacity for walking outside on the Upper West Side at 7:30 in the morning. The 67 year old actor, who wasn’t particularly imposing even before he became an “almost-old-man,” was punched in the face and had to visit the hospital for all kinds of ouchies.
Either of them could have easily been killed. Both of them certainly came close enough.
This is all in the past few weeks.
How far back in your memory banks do you have to go to recall a time when celebrities were being physically attacked in NYC? Hmmmmm?
I mean, say what you want about NYC, but Celebrities were the Protected Class in this “Utopia on the Hudson.” Now? Even they are fair game for Kaiser Wilhelm Warren’s flood of “released downtrodden prisoners.”
The city is a zoo. You know it, they know it, the thugs certainly know it, etc.
As it spirals into debt, and as the economy implodes and the paychecks that fuel the beast disappear? The proletariat – aka “the thugs” – will act like vermin always do, and they will food-riot, rob for sustenance, etc
Oh what a beautiful morning, eh?
Who in their right mind wants to take their middle-class butt back into NYC to go to work? Who wants to “Park and Ride” into the Financial District, five days a week (round trip) and risk a ride on the Subway O’Crime and Beatings?
Even the celebrities, esconced in their doorman-protected buildings, are being thrashed. What chance do you, a middle-class employee of a bank, have?
