Children told to simulate digging mass graves and shooting victims; Jewish student cast as Hitler and made to pretend to commit suicide at end of exercise

• At the end of the re-staging, the student was told to fake committing suicide just as the leader of the Third Reich did 
• Principal MScott Berkowitz said that originally, the students were taking their library class to do a self-directed project ahead of winter break 
• However, the instructor apparently called a strange audible, asking students to spend their research time participating in the reenactment 
• When asked why they were doing this, the instructor responded: ‘Because the Jews ruined Christmas’ 

A Washington DC school teacher is on leave after she allegedly told third graders in the school library to reenact scenes from the Holocaust.

The teacher at DC’s Watkins Elementary School assigned specific roles to the pre-teens in an attempt to teach the horrors. The instructor, who has not been identified, was placed on leave Friday.

A Jewish student was even cast in the role of Adolf Hitler in the bizarre reenactment, according to another student’s parent.

At the end of the re-staging, the student was told to act out the leader of the Third Reich’s suicide, which saw Hitler shoot himself dead.

Principal MScott Berkowitz said that originally, the students were taking their library class to do a self-directed project ahead of winter break.

However, the instructor apparently had other ideas, asking students to spend their research time participating in the reenactment.

‘I want to acknowledge the gravity of this poor instructional decision, as students should never be asked to act out or portray any atrocity, especially genocide, war, or murder,’ Berkowitz said in an email to parents.

Another parent said that her son was told to pretend to be on the trains that ran to the concentration camps before simulating death by gas chamber.

The student was also told to fake shooting his classmates, the parent, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, said.

There are additional accusations that the instructor was making anti-Semitic statements throughout.

When asked why they were doing this, they responded: ‘Because the Jews ruined Christmas.’

The teacher then told the students to keep the reenactment a secret, but they immediately told their homeroom instructor, according to a parent.

A school investigation is now taking place and the incident was reported to the school district.

‘This was not an approved lesson plan, and we sincerely apologize to our students and families who were subjected to this incident,’ a spokesperson for DCPS said.

The entire class had a meeting with the Watkins Elementary School mental health response team after the incident, according to Berkowitz’s email.
