The beheading of the French teacher Samuel Paty for showing a Muhammad cartoon in his class on the freedom of expression has shocked the world and galvanized France, which up to now has been notably supine in its response to jihad terror, into stronger action than it has ever taken before to preserve that freedom (although how long the French will persevere in this remains to be seen). Meanwhile, there was another beheading in France in response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to apologize and adopt Sharia blasphemy laws after Paty’s beheading, and since then teachers all over France have reported that their Muslim students approve of the beheadings and have issued threats to engage in more killing if their prophet is insulted again. But that’s France. It couldn’t possibly happen here, right? Well, in fact, it already has.
Back in 2015, when Pamela Geller and I co-sponsored a Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest in Garland, Texas, two Muslims traveled from Phoenix to commit mass murder at the event, although they were stopped in the parking lot by our security team. Anyone who thinks, however, that this was a singular event, an outlier, and that we will not see murders for blasphemy in Islam in the United States, should consider the website of Al-Khoei Foundation, a Shi’ite group in Jamaica, New York.
The Shi’ite Al-Khoei Foundation describes itself this way: “Imam Al-Khoei Benevolent Foundation is an international, religious, charitable institution established in 1989. The center conducts various religious programs in different languages, including Arabic, Urdu, Persian and English. It has a well-stocked reference and lending library, a conference room, a prayer hall and a funeral bath facility.”

That couldn’t possibly sound more benign. How could anyone object to a “religious, charitable institution” that conducts “religious programs”? It even has “a well-stocked reference and lending library”! Clearly these philanthropic bookworms are no threat to anyone, right?
It all does sound great in English, but Al-Khoei Foundation has, besides its English page, an Arabic-language site, and there the Foundation starts to sound a bit less cuddly. On one Arabic-language page, it calls for the killing of those who insult Muhammad. This page is al-khoei.us and the English page is al-khoei.org, but if you click on “English” on the al-khoei.us Arabic page, it takes you to al-khoei.org. It’s the same organization.
The page is entitled “Ninth: Insulting the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family),” as ot is part of a larger discourse about Islamic law. It states:
(Issue 214): Whoever insults the Prophet (may Allah’s prayers be upon him and his family) must be killed on his hearing as long as he does not fear harm to himself, his honor or his property and the like (1), and insulting the imams (peace be upon them) and insulting Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her) should be attached to him. (2).
(1) As for the necessity to kill him – in addition to the fact that there is no dispute concerning it, but there is unanimity on it in two aspects – there are several narrations:
Including: Sahih Hisham bin Salem on the authority of Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him): He was asked about the one who insulted the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family and peace) “So he (peace be upon him) said: The lower authorities shall kill him before he is brought to the Imam.” (1)….
The permissibility of killing him does not require permission from the legitimate ruler (1)….
It’s all stated rather drily, without emotion, in the tone of an academic discourse, but what might happen if a devout member of Al-Khoei Foundation reads this and determines that he has a responsibility before Allah to take vengeance upon those who dare to insult Muhammad? The Qur’an explicitly says that Allah will punish people by the hands of the believers: “Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory over them and satisfy the breasts of a believing people, and remove the fury in the believers’ hearts.” (9:14-15)
Thus this directive of the Al-Khoei Foundation could easily be taken as a call to action to believers who think it incumbent upon themselves to heed this Qur’anic directive and become instruments of Allah’s wrath. In Jamaica, Queens, or anywhere else in the United States. Those who regard insults to Muhammad with distaste and insist that we should all be respectful forget the fact, or never realized it in the first place, that if criticism of any group is forbidden, that group can do what it wishes unhindered, and we are on our way to a tyranny. So it’s tyranny or violence, or else people are going to have to learn to put up with being insulted. Which will the devout members of Al-Khoei Foundation choose?
