Police arrest 59, a new peak, on 101st night of Portland protests

Story continues below advertisementIn a continual escalation of arrests, Portland police arrested 59 people Saturday night and Sunday morning, by far the most arrests from a single event since the beginning of the protests against police violence and anti-Black racism 101 days ago.
The arrests were almost all on low-level misdemeanors, as well as the felony charge of riot. Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt has said that he will dismiss charges for riot and many common misdemeanors if they don’t involve “deliberate’’ property damage, theft or force against another person or threats of force.
Oregon State Police arrested 16 of the 59. The state police have not released the names or charges for those 16.
The arrests follow a night in which a riot was declared and tear gas almost immediately deployed after three Molotov cocktails were thrown from the protesters and one person was burned. Police, citing the clothing of protesters and that some carried shields, said that they decided the protest would not be peaceful and so blocked protesters from marching to Portland Police Bureau’s East Precinct.
Protesters were scattered by tear gas and police pushes in different directions.
During the night, police rounded up several protesters at a time for arrest, creating the sight of seven people with hands ziptied sitting on a curb, waiting for transportation to the county jail — an unusual one for the protests so far.

Only 59 arrests? How disappointing. I’ll get excited when it’s allot more than 59.

Will they be releasing them without bail and later dismissing the charges too?
They are doing all possible to mock and demoralize policing, justice and encourage more chaos.

How many are ultimately JAILED is what counts.

The damage to the city of Portland and its reputation is RUINED FOREVER. Three months of uncontrolled violence and ugliness and murder…. will do that to the image of a ‘hipster, laid back town’.

I say defund the police. They do more to harass law abiding citizens than arrest criminals in most cases. Without police to harass patriots the sissyboys won’t last long.

BS…there are more good cops than bad. But yes we need to be able to take the pussssyboys out, but the law is preventing law abiding citizens from doing what is needed.

I was mostly talking about the liberal cities. You have to admit they aren’t doing much there, although it does seem like they are doing a little more lately. A good example is arresting the innocent Rittenhouse kid when it was clearly self defense and doing nothing to the others.

What a spoiled rotten entitled bunch of soy boys and their “female” buddies alongside them screaming that Trump is causing them to burn down a place they didnt build, and couldnt build, as they are losers without a scintilla of common sense.
