Gov. Andrew Cuomo is begging wealthy New Yorkers to return to the city to save it from economic ruin while fighting off calls from other lawmakers to raise their taxes – a move he fears could permanently drive the top 1 percent out of the city.
Thousands of New York City residents fled Manhattan and Brooklyn earlier this year when the city was the COVID-19 epicenter of the world.
Many flocked to their second homes in the Hamptons or upstate, while others rented or bought new properties, abandoning their expensive city apartments.
Now, six months on with no end to the national nightmare in sight, many are laying down permanent roots. While New York has overcome its battle against the virus, the rest of the country – where lockdown rules have been far more relaxed – is seeing a resurgence.
It is preventing New York City from resuming its normal activity because Cuomo fears a second spike in cases will happen if people from worse-affected states travel in and infect residents again.
At a press conference on Monday, he said of the wealthiest residents who have long left the city: ‘I literally talk to people all day long who are in their Hamptons house who also lived here, or in their Hudson Valley house or in their Connecticut weekend house, and I say, “You gotta come back, when are you coming back?”
“‘We’ll go to dinner, I’ll buy you a drink. Come over, I’ll cook.”
‘They’re not coming back right now. And you know what else they’re thinking? If I stay there, I pay a lower income tax because they don’t pay the New York City surcharge,’ he said.

Retail on the UES has taken a hit along with the rest of the city. The state of NY is now staring down the barrel of a $30billion deficit over the next two years
It is not unusual for Manhattan to clear out for the month of August, when temperatures between the skyscrapers soar and send many fleeing to Long Island’s beaches or further afield.
But this summer, with the ongoing lack of appeal in the city, the likelihood that people will come back in the fall is shrinking.
What is making matters worse are the increasing calls from other lawmakers to boost taxes on the city’s highest earners to try to plug the $30billion deficit that was left by the pandemic.
Cuomo said he is resisting the idea, that will send the already transient group of taxpayers running for the hills.
‘A single per cent of New York’s population pays half of the state’s taxes and they’re the most mobile people on the globe,’ he said.
He wants the federal government to step in with help in the final stimulus bill that is due to pass soon, and has warned that unless more financial aid is given, the country is on track for a ‘real recession’.
‘If they don’t make this bill right, frankly, they shouldn’t pass it because it will be the last bill.
‘If this bill does not have funding for state and local government you will see a real recession, not just in New York but across the country [by] forcing state and local governments to lay off people,’ he said.
Crime in the Big Apple is also rising.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday suggested that Gov. Andrew Cuomo was wrong to call on wealthy New Yorkers to return to the city amid the coronavirus pandemic and an uptick in crime.
The Democrat also threatened to tax the wealthy even further if the federal government does not do more to assis
De Blasio said the city was tracking those who’d left. He acknowledged the recent uptick in crime, but said it was “directly related to coronavirus.” He said the crime situation would soon “turn around” as the New York Police Department (NYPD) is deploying new strategies and because “summer will be over soon.”
“To the point of the folks out in the Hamptons… we don’t make decisions based on a wealthy few,” de Blasio said. “I was troubled to hear this concept.”

De Blasio during his press conference also advised New Yorkers against buying a car. “My advice to New Yorkers is don’t buy a car, cars are the past, future is mass transit, biking, hiking,” the mayor said. “Going forward I will never buy a car again.”

Cuomo on Tuesday had urged wealthy New Yorkers to return to Manhattan to assist the city with the financial burden caused by the pandemic, saying coronavirus is now “under control.”
Thousands of apartments were vacated as the wealthy fled the city during the pandemic to seek refuge in places such as the Hamptons and Connecticut.
Fox News reporter Ben Evansky at the press conference brought up Cuomo’s concerns, asking: “Is the city keeping track of how many residents have left since the pandemic and the crime wave?”

The 2008 financial crisis had it’s origins in the loosening of home loan lending restrictions in the 1990’s at the goading of the NAACP because it felt that the tight lending rules were specifically designed to restrict minority home ownership. The HUD Secretary who was happy to oblige was none other than Andrew Cuomo. There cannot be a more incompetent politician than him.

So let me see… You moved out of NYC. You actually moved out of NY state. You have actually found your “happy place”. Now someone offers you dinner and a drink to move back to Riot City, Taxation City, and Tax State where you know your elderly family members can and will be sacrificed whenever the governor wants to make room in hospitals for the younger voters with earning potential.
You just bought a new place for $1.7 million, fixing it up the way you want, spent money doing the move, bought new furniture, switched your banks to local offices, informed everyone of new contact information, and some fool expect you to move back because he bribed you with a free dinner and a free drink.
Right. Will definitely jump on that immediately. Put the new home up for sale, go home hunting again, move my accounts back, get a new phone number again and new contact information, spend the bucks to move back, and all this for a free meal and a glass of booze (and you don’t even drink) with the governor. He will even cook! Won’t even take you out to an expensive place unless it has the motto “billions served” under its name.

All I have to say is: stay out of my state of New Hampshire. Whenever these city dwellers decide to go to a rural area, they turn it into the liberal garbage scow they came from.
No, we don’t want street lamps, more paved roads and a Starbucks on every corner..

They can not afford to get that free drink. They can buy booze by the case and hire a real chef and never have to worry about being mugged on the street or by grasping brainless politicians.
