A nail in the the coffin of public education. Our children, our families cannot be held hostage by left-wing education radicals.

LA Teachers Union Demands Defunding Of Police, Medicare-For-All And Ban On New Charter Schools As Conditions For Reopening Schools

Story continues below advertisement

By: Andrew Kerr, Daily Caller, July 13, 2020:

  • A major Los Angeles teachers union said a slew of left-wing policy proposals will need to be implemented to pay for the cost of safely reopening schools in the Fall.
  • The United Teachers Los Angeles union called for the defunding of police, a moratorium on new charter schools, new wealth taxes on California’s millionaires and billionaires and Medicare-for-All at the federal level in a research paper issued Thursday.
  • “It is time to take a stand against Trump’s dangerous, anti-science agenda that puts the lives of our members, our students, and our families at risk,” said United Teachers Los Angeles President Cecily Myart-Cruz.

A major Los Angeles teachers union said in a research paper issued Thursday that the reopening of schools should be conditioned upon the passage of Medicare-for-All at the federal level, along with a slew of other left-wing policy staples at the state and local levels.

“It is time to take a stand against Trump’s dangerous, anti-science agenda that puts the lives of our members, our students, and our families at risk,” United Teachers Los Angeles President Cecily Myart-Cruz said in a statement unveiling the paper. “We all want to physically open schools and be back with our students, but lives hang in the balance. Safety has to be the priority. We need to get this right for our communities.”

The paper outlined a lengthy list of health and safety measures the union identified as necessary measures to ensure schools can operate safely amid the coronavirus pandemic, including robust testing, contract tracing, sterilization regimens and physical distancing in the classroom.

The union said the costs to implement the measures necessary to restart Los Angeles schools safely could exceed $250 million, funds it said would be available if “federal, state and local governments are willing to finally prioritize pupils over plutocrats.”

The UTLA called for at least $500 billion in additional federal assistance to K-12 schools, in addition to the passage of Medicare-for-All.

The union also called for California to implement both a wealth tax on unrealized capital gains for the state’s billionaires, and surtaxes on state residents that earn over $1 million a year. The UTLA estimated the two measures would bring in a combined $14.5 billion a year in tax revenue.

At the local level, the union called for the Los Angeles police to be defunded, saying “police violence is a leading cause of death and trauma for Black people, and is a serious public health and moral issue.”

The UTLA also called for a moratorium on new charter schools, saying that the charter schools already operating in the city of “double-dipping” by accepting federal CARES act funding while also receiving state funding, which did not decline amid the pandemic.

The American Academy of Pediatrics urged school systems in late June to re-open schools at the start of the upcoming academic year in the fall, arguing that keeping children at home poses a far greater health risk than coronavirus. Children are less likely to become infected with COVID-19, and if they do, they’re less likely to become symptomatic and spread the virus, the AAP said. (RELATED: American Academy of Pediatrics Urges Schools To Reopen In Fall)

“The AAP strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school,” the AAP wrote. “The importance of inperson learning is well-documented, and there is already evidence of the negative impacts on children because of school closures in the spring of 2020.”

Lead by example cut the pay of the high pay of teachers relative to what they produce. Base their pay on merit, test scores of their students and improvement of the scores. I’m sure the teachers can go for this type pay structure. It make them accountable.

this is open civil war against us by the employees of the democrat-run government: democrat teachers won’t teach until cops are disbanded, democrat mailmen throw the repub ballots away, democrat labs lie about test results, democrat civil servants openly disobey the commands of the chief executive, democrat military officers put out racist anti-white bulletins, democrat judges ignore the constitution, and on and on. it’s now openly a war on the governed by our own government. i say we call a national strike, halt all tax payments, and starve these democrats to death. this would be over in a month.

I wish we could do that but we all fear the IRS, the States and municipalities and being thrown into jail if we do not pay taxes. I would love to know however what is the penalty for breaking their oath to defend and protect the Constitution of the USA, which they all take when being sworn into office.

But they were arresting people who went to work, went outside, or didn’t wear masks and putting them in those same jail cells they said were unsafe.

Letting “non-violent” criminals out who immediately raped, murdered, stole, and rioted when they were released; but trying to put Roger Stone and Gen. Flynn in prison.

They were such violent people, the rotten DemonicRats had to send a SWAT team to Roger Stone’s house to arrest him before dawn with a no-knock warrant evidently.

Not really. They have that $3.3 trillion they voted for and since so many people not able to get PP other than liberals who don’t even need it like DeNiro, Harvard, etc.; it seems that the DNC HR in charge of it is using it for their purposes only. It’s another IRS type of conspiracy against conservatives. There should be a way to make the HR not use it politically like that. Then again, they were even able to get away with having 3rd world, kangaroo courts and outright framing jobs against Pres. Trump, Kavanaugh, Gen. Flynn, Roger Stone, and many others.

The Problems with the Common Core
By Stan Karp
https://rethinkingschools.org/articles/the-problems-with-the-common-core/

Today everything about the Common Core, even the brand name the Common Core State Standards is contested because these standards were created as an instrument of contested policy. They have become part of a larger political project to remake public education in ways that go well beyond slogans about making sure every student graduates “college and career ready,” however that may be defined this year. We’re talking about implementing new national standards and tests for every school and district in the country in the wake of dramatic changes in the national and state context for education reform. These changes include:

A 10-year experiment in the use of federally mandated standards and tests called No Child Left Behind (NCLB) that has been almost universally acknowledged as a failure.

The adoption of test-based teacher evaluation frameworks in dozens of states, largely as a result of federal mandates.

Although, even a rifle requires a permit, in the UK. Many modern sporting rifles are illegal, with a permit. This bullpup goes through any loophole available, in UK laws.

It’s chambered for ACP. And, it’s lever action, which is a manual reload, getting around the UK’s restrictions on self loading rifles. And, to get around the magazine restrictions (I believe 3 or 4 rounds, in the UK), it’s …. get this … BELT FED!

Here’s the link again. Hopefully, this time it will work.

“The union also called for California to implement both a wealth tax on
unrealized capital gains for the state’s billionaires, and surtaxes on
state residents that earn over $1 million a year. The UTLA estimated the
two measures would bring in a combined $14.5 billion a year in tax
revenue.” Yeah, that will keep people from leaving CA. The union’s answer to everything, is always ‘we need more money.’ It’s never ending. LAUSD has probably one of the highest budgets of any school district in the country, and it is one of the lowest performing. Seven of the top executives at the district, earn over $300K a year, each. Next year, they’ll just demand more. And the residents of L.A. will just lap it up.

So if your local Californication street gang buys purer methamphetamine through Mexican drug cartels at discounted prices will they have to pay unrealized capital gains before they sell the diluted product for twice as much on the streets of Californication? Then again, it’s a underground economy so I guess not.
Taxing unrealized capital gains on things like real estate and equities will certainly be a way to clear out Californication of people who pay the majority of income and property taxes now.
What would happen with unrealized capital losses though? Or would those just be ignored.

Tell me about it. I am a retired physician. The last private practice in which I worked was in 2010. We had a medical assistant who would print the patient’s chief complaint in giant 1st grade alphabet style on the encounter sheet and literally use up 1/2 the sheet for one or two sentences. I asked her to please just write the complaint in standard size to fit in the lines so that I could have room to write my note. She told me “I can’t write like you do. I only know how to print.” She was totally illiterate in reading or writing cursive and only able to print using 4 lines like a 1st grader! And she was applying to enter nursing school!

After leaving that practice circa 2012 I wrote a Rx for a patient for Penicillin VK. (I attended Catholic schools and have excellent handwriting so much so that I had received calls from pharmacists who suspected that someone who was NOT a doctor had written the Rx.) Anyway, I learned that the pharmacist did not fill out the Rx. Why? Because he was unable to read cursive.

Perhaps the worst institution in our Country is the public school system. Horrible educations. Kids that cannot even do basic math, barely read or write, and have no understanding of science are graduating from high school. That is the future of our work force? Start today to build a transition strategy to migrate from public school to charter schools that start with the basics in first years and quickly focus on STEM or other specialized curriculums. Incentivize businesses to sponsor schools that will produce future employees. Allow these charter schools to specialize and allow student applicants to select a school that serves their interest. I hope that adults with “stay-at-home” kids have finally seen just how poorly their children are being prepared for their future. Have you seen just how poorly our children compare to many foreign educated students? Let me help. Start teaching your kids how to work in agriculture fields, mop floors or flip burgers. That is their future unless we make some serious changes – and start today. Serious problem – and these morons have the failed audacity to hold us hostage to their demands? One of easiest decisions we should be making is to transition to a high quality private education system. Your children’s future is at risk.

LA Teachers – is that a promise, cross your heart and hope to die? If so, bring it on. That is a totally wonderful way to destroy your socialist educational system. The cops funding can be canceled out, school funds would replace it. LA can then rent out the schools to private school organizations and we can all raise double middle digits the teachers’ union’s general direction.

I can dream, can’t I?

No one of means who lives in LA sends their kids to public schools anyway. Those of lesser means left a long time ago and moved to areas where the public schools were better. I attended high school in the late 60s in LA and one of the best was Fairfax High. Then came mandatory bussing and Fairfax was no more. And high scores on standardized tests from Fairfax students was no more.

Fairfax High, the founder of Broadcom graduated from there.

Jan and Dean graduated from University High in Santa Monica where they both played on the football team. They completed degrees at UCLA and USC while recording their music. Jan Berry (a 150 IQ!) had been accepted into medical school before his terrible car crash near Dead Man’s Curve. But those days are gone forever.

Being a millionaire in Southern California isn’t a big deal. Look up what a house cost in a coastal community. If you want to be literal about it I suppose I’m a millionaire. I’ve got $1.2M in my retirement and my house is paid off. And I still feel poor. I clip coupons. I do without things I would really like to have. Maybe it’s the way I was raised. I’m 59 and I am loathe to touch my savings. I live day to day on a meager pension. If I was to go wild I really like the Honda Civic Type R (the new blue) and I’d like some new speakers (SVS). But I don’t.
I got to this point by living within my means my entire life. And saving. I put money away like I was paying off a bad debt. The liberal notion of redistributing my hard earned and hard saved wealth to folks who didn’t work hard and wasted what they did have infuriates me.
The teachers unions are a bunch of spoiled brats. I have friends and neighbors who benefit from being in unions. But nobody benefits from the unions more than those who run them. I don’t think the individual union member’s politics are necessarily reflected in the moves that the unions make. I guess the members vote on matters, but are the outcomes manipulated?
Defunding the police is the latest liberal flavor of the day. I myself think that a lot of this agitation will settle down after the November election. Of course if Biden wins the stock market will tank. And whoever is chosen for him by the DNC to be the VP will be our president within the first year of his presidency. And mcuh of the agitation will continue because not enough is being done to stop it and, frankly, to ridicule it. I think it’s high time for those on the right to use some of Alinsky’s rules against the left. Identify the target, use their own rules against them, ridicule them.

Its takes the student’s education hostage. What does defund the police have to do with education? Same for healthcare. The union leaders and union members are foisting their Marxist political dreams on the state and parents of the children.

California could (should) pass a law that if the teachers refuse to go back to work then the old concept of “no work no pay” . For the unions, if the union members (teachers) refuse to work then the union is fined $10 per member per day. Also, for every day off work take a year off the teacher’s seniority, which will affect the pay cheque if and when they return to work. After all, the teachers are considered an essential service and there are responsibilities that must be respected.

After two weeks out, fire them all. Let them reapply for the job, without seniority and start back with the base pay.

Money talks, and inside every good socialist there is a capitalist.

Why burden Mexico. Give California independence and see if they can stand on their own two feet with their ideas. They’re insolvent and will remain insolvent if they keep the same policies. They won’t be able to tax their way out of it. At some point, their tax base will leave.

It’s arguable if Mexico hasn’t become a narco-terrorist state, the border regions of Mexico can be said to be controlled by Mexican drug cartels and their entire government is rotten with corruption.

Medicare-for-All, I suppose this means for Illegal Aliens too. Two points regarding this topic: Teachers you must have left your math teachers out of the equation in your Agenda creation since the numbers don’t add up and you left out your political history teachers too, since a local teachers union does not hold sway over Federal Laws. If you don’t open up for your own reasons fine but don’t try to deflect your failures or fears on the President of the United States because you think you’re all powerful and can dictate Federal Policy, change the character of the Medicare Act created in the 30s by Roosevelt and Medicare Medicare Medical in the 60s (which by the way given todays population distribution doesn’t realistically function with today’s medical costs and this is just for those 65 and over. If its for every American it will a. break the system b lower the procedures offered and quality of treatment for everyone and like Obamacare raise the costs to be prohibitively high. c. long long wait times for treatment for everyone and d. overwhelm the US Budget. It’s grand to live in a Fantasy world as a teacher and think you know more than others. I haven’t even discussed your other your other topics since most are child-like and not akin to engaging baby talk back and forth and that’s just what it is.
In general if you think Police are going work in a profession putting their lives on the line, restricted in their actions, by non-professionals who don’t know what they’re talking about and have their equipment and resources/assets taken away from them, maybe frozen pay or lower pay, you can forget about having a police force. You can call you’re BLM rep or Antifa rep next time you need help. As for other items on your wish list, I don’t have time today to write a book; but truly they can easily be torn down as this one was eliminated not to mention that you are out of order, this is not your place and this is not about the kids or safety issues.

Our government allowed these public sector unions to start and then become massive. It’s our government that then uses these public unions as attack dogs on the citizenry. This is another in your face example of every issue we face today big or small, the government is the root cause or exacerbation of the problem.

No need to fire them all – only those that refuse to go back to work. If they do not want to work, they do not want a job, so fire them. We do not need Marxist teachers anyway.

Okay. So, we’ll cut off their unemployment because like anyone else collecting unemployment who is offered to come back and they refuse….they lose their unemployment.

The Unions will fight it because that’s where they get all of their money to fund Democrat candidates……but it won’t stop the President from stopping unemployment. No work…..no pay.

I’m not positive, but it is my understanding that most “teachers” are not collecting unemployment because they still being paid. I believe that in SF the “teachers” will work 1/2 days “teaching” online classes and collecting full time pay. Again, not 100% sure, but fairly certain.

THANK GOD! At last some good news on COVID-19! It looks as though there might finally be a breakthrough. If these schools stay closed maybe . . . just ,maybe . . . we can institute some real schools who actually teach something – starting with the truth about American history. Long overdue. Don’t anybody suggest they ever open again.

Here’s a better idea: Defund the Teachers Unions as a first step to the defunding and outlawing of All Public Employee Unions.

Teachers such as these are A DIME A DOZEN. The students they are trying to teach probably don’t understand English anyway. This will save the tax payers money, who knows if half of them even have a degree.
