Users Ask Twitter to Remove Scott Walker Christmas Tree Tweet
On Saturday, former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker announced that Twitter had sent him an official warning after users flagged one of his tweets sharing a Christmas tree.
“This morning I got an email from [Twitter] saying they received complaints from this tweet. Merry Christmas,” Walker tweeted.
Story continues below advertisementThe tweet in question involved the image of a Christmas tree with the text, “This is a Christmas Tree that is used by people celebrating Christmas. This is not a holiday tree.”
Twitter gives users the ability to “report” messages on Twitter, alerting the social media platform that the message in question is: “suspicious or spam”; “abusive or harmful”; expressive of “intentions of self-harm or suicide”; or simply not interesting to the user in question.
When Twitter sent Walker the email, the platform was likely notifying the former governor that users had marked his tweet to be spam or “abusive or harmful,” a category that includes “hate speech.”
Offensive? Christmas Is a Multicultural Holiday
Walker did not respond to PJ Media’s request for comment. He did not share the email from Twitter, which would have identified the nature of the complaints.It seems likely Twitter users accused Walker of “hate speech.” A few users attacked his message as a way to justify hate.
“The last time I looked Christmas is a holiday and thus any Christmas tree is also a holiday tree. Also the last time I looked using Christianity to justify hate and discrimination is pure heresy! Why don’t you check what the Bible says about heresy!” one user tweeted.
“Hi Scott. They’re called the holidays for inclusivity—many people & religions joyfully celebrate the season. The ‘war on Christmas’ rhetoric is an inane, ignorant GOP talking point based on fear & hate—spread from people like you,” another added. “There is no war on Christmas. Happy Holidays!”
Perhaps ironically, these messages accusing Walker of spreading or justifying “hate” by celebrating Christmas suggest that the “War on Christmas” is more real than they suggest. Americans are evenly divided on whether people should say, “Merry Christmas!” or “Happy Holidays!” Many non-Christians celebrate Christmas, including Muslims, non-Orthodox Jews, and those who do not affiliate with any particular religion. About a third of Jews (32 percent) said they had a Christmas tree in their home in 2012, according to a 2013 Pew Research survey.Much of the rhetoric on the war on Christmas is arguably overblown, and there are far more important issues to discuss. However, the political correctness push to replace “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays” is not over, as illustrated by this sorry episode with Scott Walker.

The only immigrants who are offended by Christmas are Muslims. Everyone else celebrates it or at least respects it because they know it is part of our culture.
So never forget most immigrants integrate well, except the Muslims. They cause trouble wherever they go, it’s been that way for 1400 years.

Indeed that is a Christmas tree used by people celebrating Christmas. That doesn’t mean that non Christians can’t participate on some spectrum. Nonetheless, when anyone puts up a Christmas tree in their home, regardless of their religion, they are celebrating at least a somewhat secular aspect of Christmas. People get too offended by the truth and so attack the source.

Like most Christian Holy days, there is a huge amount of pagan symbolism… A Christmas tree is one of these, so it should not OFFEND ANYONE… So a Christmas Tree is actually kind of secular… Anyone that can’t appreciate a well decorated, well lit, Christmas tree, is just a miserable bugger.

You are right in calling this decorated plant a Christmas tree. It is. And it is all he did. It is used to celebrate Christmas but appreciated by all who enjoy a little light in the darkness. It isn’t used to celebrate any other holiday – so no need to call it a holiday tree.

The article and the Tweet are in just about identifying what to name a large plant with lights and tinsel. It’s a Christmas tree. My point is that Scott Walker should not be receiving maltreatment from Twitter for identifying it for what it is. He posted a Christmas tree and identified it as a Christmas tree. He should not have had to take it down.

I am Jewish, but in Russia, where I was born and raised, everybody put the Christmas tree. We all called it-New Year tree. It was not related in our minds with any religion. It was just a celebration of the New Year. I love the tree. The beautiful smell and the childhood memories. If someone doesn’t like it, he/she should shot up and go to hell. It’s all ridiculous to even discuss the traditions (beautiful) of the mostly Christian country and even criticize them. If someone don’t like the traditions of the country they invade, they should go back and leave us alone. We wouldn’t cry for sure. Merry upcoming Christmas to all my friends!

This article is really about Scott Walker being unjustly attacked for calling a Christmas tree a Christmas tree. It’s a Christmas tree – and being forced to remove such a statement from twitter is ridiculous. No more and no less. I have heard of the New Year tree recently. It sounds like a sweet tradition. Nonetheless, it seems to be an offshoot of a Christmas tree. Scott Walker could have said in the US this is a Christmas tree. I imagine his point was to just stop watering down traditions for the sake of not offending. – – – – I see you arrowed up my comment. I didn’t notice that before so I thought your response was in anger to me (when I see us having the same opinion but expressing it differently). Seems that was right.
