Tension, fear and violence in Syria’s al-Hol displacement camp

AL-HOL, Syria — The woman told aid workers it was an accident. Her 14-year-old daughter had slipped and fallen, she said. There was nothing they could have done.
But the body told a different story. The girl’s neck had been broken in three places, doctors said, and she died with eyes open, biting her lips and struggling to breathe. Photos and medical records suggested she had been beaten about the torso, then strangled. It was murder, not a misstep.
The teen, an Azerbaijani girl who had lived until earlier this year with her mother under the Islamic State’s rule, had run afoul of the die-hard ISIS adherents who have come in the past few months to dominate parts of the al-Hol displacement camp here in northeastern Syria, according to camp residents. They said she had suggested dispensing with her black niqab, the face covering worn by ultraconservative Muslim women.
Half a year after the territorial defeat of the Islamic State, the vast sprawl of tents at the al-Hol camp is becoming a cauldron of radicalization. About 20,000 women and 50,000 children who had lived under the caliphate are held in dire conditions at the camp, which is operated and guarded by 400 U.S.-supported Kurdish troops. With the men of ISIS imprisoned elsewhere, the women inside the fences of al-Hol are reimposing the militant group’s strictures, enforcing them upon those deemed impious with beatings and other brutality and extending what residents and camp authorities call a reign of fear.
Several guards have been stabbed by women who concealed kitchen knives in the folds of their robes. Women are threatened for being in contact with lawyers who might get them out of the camp or for speaking with other outsiders. A pregnant Indonesian woman was murdered, medical officials say, apparently after speaking to a Western media organization. Images of her body suggest she might have been whipped.
“It’s happening at night and it’s happening in the shadows, but no one informs on who did it,” said a senior member of the camp’s intelligence department. “They’re afraid of each other here.”

Fourteen people with direct knowledge of camp conditions described in interviews the mounting anger, violence and fanaticism growing amid the squalor. These people, including camp residents, aid workers and Kurdish officials, spoke on the condition of anonymity because of security concerns.
Kurdish security officials, affiliated with the U.S.-allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), say they have the troops to guard the facility but do little else. “We can contain the women, but we can’t control their ideology,” the intelligence official said. “There are many types of people here, but some of them were princesses among ISIS. There are spaces inside the camp that are like an academy for them now.”
In a report last month, the Defense Department’s inspector general, citing information from the U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS, warned that the SDF’s inability to provide more than “minimal security” at the camp has allowed for the “uncontested” spread of ISIS ideology there.
In some places, children, including an estimated 20,000 born in the caliphate, are literally a captive audience.
Near one gate of the camp, guards have collected homemade toy guns and Islamic State paraphernalia that children have made to pass the time. The play weapons are made from water pipes and bound tightly with duct tape. Flags have been colored in painstaking detail, the hand neat but unmistakably childish.
“The children need help here. You can see it,” the intelligence official said, fixing the pile with a tired stare. “How do we stop them becoming their parents?”

Since the start of the year, when the camp accommodated fewer than 10,000 people, al-Hol has swelled dramatically. Many of the women and children were transferred to the camp after the last ISIS stronghold, in the Syrian village of Baghouz, was overrun by the SDF, with U.S. military backing.
The residents are now segregated by nationality. Most sections house Syrians and Iraqis, while more than 9,000 others — among them the camp’s most radical inhabitants — are penned behind chain-link fences in a sun-bleached and closely guarded patch known as the “Annexe.” It is home to Arabs, Asians, Africans and Europeans, among others.
The guards enter this zone warily. An ambush late last month left one with broken bones.
“They can do anything to you here,” said one European woman in her 20s, her blue eyes darting around the camp as she spoke.
Three camp residents said that they had been stopped by women who first corrected their attire and then threatened that repeat behavior would be punished.
The relative of a European woman confined in the Annexe with three children described her as more fearful than ever before. The woman had changed tents several times after a group of Tunisian and Indonesian women began threatening her upon learning that the family’s attorney was trying to bring her home, according to the relative.
“They threaten other women who either gave interviews and declared they were no longer supporting ISIS, or who are trying to return to their countries,” the relative said.

In the nearby city of Hasakah, two doctors said that patients from the camp were refusing to come for follow-up appointments in facilities run by Kurdish authorities or international organizations. “They tell us, ‘We cannot come,’ ” one said. “They say, ‘If we come to you, [hard-liners] beat us, or worse.’ ”

They were “duped” because something in them was attracted to the evil doings of ISIS and/or the chance to shack up with and marry really bad men. It isn’t like ISIS was ever some heroic organization. They were nothing but evil and it was easy for anyone to know that.

I don’t blame the Muslims so much for this as the hypocritical white people. Of course these Muslim brides want to attach themselves to a kindly Westerner like me. That is logical. I blame the whites, who are secretly racist, they don’t want Muslims, but they are as cruel as Isis if you say anything against Islam, these whites want to boost up Islam, to dupe you, to persuade you to accept the Muslims that they don’t want. And I think I agree with you that these atheist Westerners who are cruel and cowardly only now think they control the Muslims but one day they will wake up and get a nasty shock (like upper class Germans thought they could use and control thug Hitler only to one day be shot by Hitler’s stormtroopers). I am afraid I think that serves them right.

I don’t know about “many,” but some I am sure. Their persecution is real because they are living godly in their present situation. I strongly question the Christianity of most in America, especially all the sectarians who espouse their denomination, but not Christ. The Billy Graham heretical gospel has corrupted millions in this country, promising heaven, while giving hypocrisy and religion without repentance, without sincerity and integrity or commitment to the one who died that they might be free from sin, not live in it while claiming his forgiveness.

Since ’72 Americans have been funding Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the U.S. Blood is on the hands of all taxpayers, but especially these wicked Congressmen/Senators who refuse to stop this while claiming to be pro-life…I include Presidents with them. Today, over 2,000 babies will be slaughtered in the U.S. and you want to talk about the evil of Islam without recognizing this greater of evils within our own country? We surpassed Hitler long ago in the slaughter of innocents and this in a country claiming to be free with human rights. These babies have no right to live. Muslim women make their choice along with the men. Some turn from the wickedness of Islam, but Americanized gospels save no souls, only make proselytes. The true Christ is reaching some of these folks in spite of today’s organized churches. But how many Americans think themselves Christians, but do not obey the Son of God and have never repented of their own sins?

I don’t need to know you personally, as I am replying to your ideas that you write. If there is fault in what I wrote, than correct it, but if you consider this a “tyrannical put down,” then you are far too sensitive to even put yourself into such a discussion, as this was just a different view from my Christian perspective.
The reality as I see it, is many are looking for something to blame besides their own wickedness and that of our nation. As long as we can point to an evil foe and put all “evil” upon him, we don’t have to face our own logs. Islam is indeed a wicked religion that has corrupted many, but it is NOT the evil of all evils. It is one of many evils. And many of the Muslim people trapped in that bondage are looking for a way out, but don’t see it in modern Christianity (but some has seen it in the Bible and other true believers). If you do not recognize the hypocrisy and corruption in denominational organizations and the great harm they are doing to the name of Christ, then I wonder….are you part of them? Those who love Christ, love the truth.

I don’t believe this needs to be a difficult or time consuming problem in the age where even your SMART kitchen appliances have audio/video capabilities to spy on you. Surely there is WIFI in the camp. They should find out which of these authoritarian spirit control freaks are threatening the others and round them up in a mass raid. Hang them publicly. It is going to be very hard to redeem the children of ISIS women.

We have to keep in mind these people don’t know any better. They were taught from birth not about equality, liberal values, tolerance and respect for others, golden rule, etc like most of us have but about the Quran and Mohammad, anything ‘un-Islamic’ is evil. All they know is violence, punishment, beatings, rape, torture, barbarity.
They need to be de-brainwashed and taught how to interact with others with civility. China actually has the right idea, that’s mostly what they did to their Muslim population. I agree with Pam, the hardcore believers like the ISIS wives will have to be put down like rabid dogs, they can’t be reformed.
We really should be treating Islam like a global pandemic and Muslims the disease-carriers. Smart people should know by now we’re not dealing with a harmless ideology with a few bad apples, we’re dealing with a political movement exactly like Nazism or Communism which comes ready-made with its own laws and system of govt which is completely contradictory to our own.
We should be either sending Muslims for re-education to integrate into the West (something I believe will not work on most of them) or deporting them. So long as their population continues to grow, so will the rapes, terrorism and destruction of our freedom/way of life. The Muslims cannot be allowed to stay, they’re invaders/colonists and they hate us.

soon there will be even more corrupted versions of the Bible. They will have versions for people who can’t accept their own plumbing, all the sexually rebellious, versions that seek to unite all man made religions into one erroneous “religion”, etc. That is why I appreciate the accuracy and readability of the 1769 Authorized Version of the King James Bible. It is based on the overwhelmingly proven Syriac texts. The others are Vatican approved Bible based on very faulty Egyptian texts.
There is plenty of proof to my statements. Check them out. the truth can only set you free if you know the truth. the one true God IS truth. He is brilliant, and He is also so merciful that He was even willing to reach down and save me. He will do the same for you if/when you have humbled yourself to understand that He is way smarter and better than you. Will you spend eternity in darkness and anguish for the sake of false pride? That would be very dumb. Don’t do it. Satan wants to keep you deceived.

I have recently come to perceive how incredibly deceptive and deeply malignant the devil and his kingdom of darkness really is. Jesus is the Word. Of course the devil is going to be constantly working strategies against God’s Word. But God does speak to His remnant and He is well able to write a book. God would not have a situation in which there was no trustworthy source of His Word.
We are in the time of the great falling away from the truth. Many, if not most, Christian Seminaries were infiltrated by atheist scoffers long ago. Many seminary students are taught that the Bible is unreliable. Satan is very smart and very subtle. Good! God allows His children to have a very powerful enemy so that we can sharpen our discernment. I stand by the fact that there is ample text to confirm the KJV. The Alexandrian texts that are the basis of the Vatican approved Bibles are proven not trustworthy. You have a right to your opinion, but I must disagree.

The greatest proof is found in obeying the scriptures and the words of Jesus. “Repent, and believe the gospel…” Those who repent, turning from their sins and calling upon the Lord in humility, will find Him to be true.

I know just the opposite. What you think you know and believe is a lie, but your arrogance and malicious “chattering” against those who believe and railing against God do not go unnoticed. Every word you write is recorded also in heaven in a book of your life, which God will use in the final great Day of Judgment. His just punishment and sentence against you will never be questioned as the evidence, your own words, will be used against you to prove your guilt. You will not escape the punishment, neither those long years you wait in hell for that final judgment and that just sentence of eternal fire.
I don’t wish that upon anyone, but those who choose the ungodly living and wicked lifestyles who are enemies of God and man, offending many by their wicked deeds, will be justly punished in eternity, especially since the way of escape was made clear to them and they refused it and laughed at it and mocked it like you.

Most call that hatred. You mock the things of God and don’t have anything useful to add to a conversation. Many call that foolish.
