Supporting UNRWA, We Keep The Conflict Alive,’ Swiss Foreign Minister Declares After Visit to Jordan

by Ben Cohen, Algemeiner, May 17, 2018 (thanks to Inexion)

In an unexpected departure from the international consensus in support of UNRWA — the UN body that sustains the descendants of the Palestinian refugees of the 1948 War of Independence — Switzerland’s foreign minister has stated that continued funding for the agency without the reform of its mandate is perpetuating the Palestinian conflict with Israel.
“Today [UNRWA] has become part of the problem,” Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis told a group of Swiss journalists as he flew home from an official visit to Jordan on Thursday. “It provides the ammunition to continue the conflict. For as long as Palestinians live in refugee camps, they want to return to their homeland.”
Cassis continued: “By supporting UNRWA, we keep the conflict alive. It is a perverse logic, because actually everyone wants to end the conflict.”
The foreign minister said his interest in UNRWA’s future had been triggered by the US announcement in January that it was withholding $65 million out of a $125 million aid package earmarked for the agency.
In Cassis’ view, the US was taking “a big risk: millions of Palestinians could take to the streets.”
“When all UNRWA states refuse to provide funds, a machinery which provides stability breaks down,” he said. “This is a risk that Switzerland cannot afford — different from the US, perhaps.”
But he also argued that sustaining UNRWA in its present form — a policy that goes back to the agency’s formation in 1949 — no longer made sense for the international community. “Instead of supporting UNRWA schools and hospitals, we could support Jordanian institutions to promote the integration of Palestinian refugees,” Cassis suggested.
Saying that it was “unrealistic” for the 5 million Palestinians registered with UNRWA  to “return” to what is now Israel, Cassis also questioned whether it was correct to refer to this population as “refugees,” a legal designation.
“The word ‘refugee’ in this case no longer corresponds to the meaning we attach to it,” Cassis remarked. “We speak of third-generation families who live not in actual camps but in cities. Most have a Jordanian passport. I wanted to visit the camps to get an idea why we still talk about refugees.”
In what might be seen as another departure from protocol, Cassis was also disarmingly frank about the attractions of Europe from the vantage point of the conflict-ridden Middle East.
“We are neither at war nor are we affected by economic sanctions. We trade goods and services worth more than a billion francs every day,” the foreign minister reflected, in answer to a question about Swiss economic negotiations with the EU. “But we are so spoiled by our prosperity, by the peace, that we realize too seldom how lucky we are.”

The conflict will never end. Get used to that fact. At best Israel and the Palestinians will enjoy a cold peace of sorts
like Israel has with Egypt today but never anything of substance because and only because the Palestinians will not and cannot recognize Israel’s rights to existance in that area. They can’t and won’t give up the lies that the Koran perpetuates. It’s is that simple. As long as Israel remains strong it can withstand the pressures that are inevitable when dealing with Islam. The problem is Islam and not a territorial dispute.

True, the Arabs’ original purpose for their jihad was to “unite” the other nations of the world under a single Caliphate.

WWIII is already begun…It’s been going on since it was declared five years before 9/11. The actual document can be read here: So it’s been a 22 year war and it is a Holy War. The problem is Islam is winning the war because the ‘would be Crusaders’ have been squashed by their respective governments from raising any armies against the invasion! Not only that, they cannot even voice their opinions about the enemies occupying their lands. It’s actually a coup d’état of western democracies, by a few secret elite forces, to be replaced by Islamic sharia law under oppressive Islamic caliphates. Say goodbye to progress and welcome your digression back to medieval times. Oh, don’t get me wrong…technology will still be held by those in power, as will weaponry, but the masses will be unarmed and forced into a form of slavery, not seen since before the Magna Carta was signed, by their new Islamic masters…call it neo-Feudalism.

Islam and territory do go together. Islam plants a mosque, the Umma grows around that mosque and it becomes their every expanding land. Islam is the perfect vehicle for conquest. It is a lengthy process but the BOMB is in the Islamic population growth, i.e. polygamous marriage, and Islamic shariah law. No-go zones are ever-expanding zones. New mosques are popping up like mushrooms after a spring rain.

There will NEVER, EVER be lasting peace with Israel.
A seven year peace agreement will someday be reached but it is a FALSE peace agreement. It is also called Daniel’s 70th week in the Old Testament. Half way through it will be broken.
That is Biblical prophecy.
I’m betting my life on the Bible being true!

This ” conflict ” is about to go into overdrive. The level of violence will escalate dramatically and will involve many Islamic countries coming together to fight Israel. It is not just the Palestinians who refuse to recognize Israel’s right to exist. Many Islamic countries leaders have declared their desire to see Israel wiped out and this ” Jerusalem as capital ” issue will be the catalyst to their attempts. Yes they are strong, but this will be no walk in the park.
Not sure what you mean about islam not being a territorial dispute. Their ultimate goal is a world wide caliphate – territory is very important to them, but that is not what defines them if that is what you mean

The conflict may have a territorial component to it and this may be part of the Islamic prerogative or it may be resource based. However, that being said, my view is that the conflict between Israel and Islam is, in microcosm, an epic battle between theocratically driven societies and secular industrial societies.
The best way to look at the overall situation is to measure what the result of domination by theocratic Islam has had on the Muslim populations themselves. Those populations are what we term oppressed, really oppressed. It seems to be a no-brainer whether we look at Shia or Sunni populations…..the intent of Islam is total domination wherever it is instituted.
The medieval mindset that dominates the world of Islam will not offer any real competition to Israel, the USA and other countries in the realm of technology.
I agree with you that this will be “no walk in the park”. However, the secular, industrial material driven societies will eventually prevail. Of course there is a distinct danger that Islam will become the official religion in some Western countries such as Sweden, the UK and so on. When that happens and the Muslims gain control of the resources and technology of those countries including nuclear capabilities, we then have a very serious situation to deal with.
Muslim countries that have been, even for a short time secular such as Turkey and Iran will not easily return to theocratic domination and that is another facet to this epic battle.

I’m not sure Turkey ever didn’t enforce islamic blasphemy and heresy laws. Furthermore, Jews and Christians were ALWAYS subject to persecution by the Turkish muslums. Church bells may not be rung in Turkey, nor the shofar publicly sounded and repairing ANY churches or synagogues requires a lengthy, frustrating process to receive permission to do so, which is sometimes denied.

Good comment Richard. However I can’t see how we can strike soon and decisively in a way that would deal with the problem. As I am not a prophet, I can’t predict what the outcome will be. That being said it seems that initially those Muslim countries that are or have been progressive might pave a way for the future. As I said in my comment I look to Iran and Turkey as potential problems for the theocratic rulers and their medieval mindset.
Also Saudi Arabia might come about and join the modern world. They surely see that the age of oil is about to end and they need to modernize quickly. This will, of necessity, involve tearing a few pages out of the Koran. Perhaps they are up to it.
America along with Israel and perhaps the VISEGRAD countries are the only hope at present. My real concern is who will lead the USA after DJT has completed his stint? There is no one like him around.

This guy is delusional if he thinks everyone wants the conflict to end. Yes, the Israelis would love it to end, but the Muslims are obsessed with annihilating Israel, and if they achieve that (which they won’t) then they’ll just start a new conflict with Christians, then other Muslims.

All of them are Arabs, many simply descendants of those who invaded the Levant in 636/637 AD, so they should be advised to go back Arabia. The descendants of those who were driven from their land by the Romans have returned to their land, so now it’s the Arab’s turn to get out of land their miserable forebears so brutally took over.

At one point the PLO had established terrorist camps/bases in Jordan to launch cross border raids into Israel — which the Jordanians didn’t mind and forced Israel to invade Jordan to put a stop to it. The constitution of Jordan expressly forbids Jews from being citizens AND owning property:

Long past due: Instead of funding UNRWA, USA should use the money it would have given UNRWA only to help Gazans relocate to other countries. Half want to leave.

Also, Hamas leadership needs to be expelled (can go to Qatar to join the rest or be assassinated.)

Why doesn’t another MUSLIM country integrate them in their country? Why should the U.S. give them ANY money?
Why aren’t Muslims charitable with fellow Muslims?

Switzerland is a nasty, evil little country that hides behind the image of clean little mountain villages, chocolate and watches. Their wealth comes from blood money both today and historically! The Swiss are anything but neutral when it comes to anything Israeli and Jewish; they’ve supported every anti-Israel proposition that’s come their way. If the world would get serious about solving much of the planet’s problems, Swiss banks would be the first target. Swiss banks are the engines that drive global corruption, crime, terrorism, 3rd-world thuggery, etc.
