On Thursday, May 10th, 2018, “Composing For Peace: A Concert For Social Change” was held at the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center – NYC.

The “Composing For Peace” concert celebrated Seeds of Peace 25th anniversary with David Broza, Mira Awad and Noa (Achinoam Nini).

“In times of turbulence and uncertainty, music has the potential to capture the zeitgeist of a society, while inspiring human solidarity and renewed hope for the future. In this spirit, we have invited three renowned musicians—David Broza, Noa (Achinoam Nini) and Mira Awad —to perform and share stories about the unique role that music and the arts play in social change and in Israel today.
While the concert – co-organized by NIF – was held INSIDE Temple Emanu-El, OUTSIDE the Jewish Defense League NY stood up against the New Israel Fund … and one of its enablers … Temple Emanu-El.
FACT: The New Israel Fund (NIF) supports BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanction) and BDS is Antisemitism.
What was Temple Emanu-El thinking!?
“Our rabbis should be leading the fight to end BDS. Our shuls should be places that we are learning Torah, to love Israel and be a place to proud of who we are. They should never be a place that supports anti-Antisemitism!” [New JDL NY]
The New Jewish Defense League-NY rallied outside the concert to condemn BDS, voicing their outrage at Temple Emanu-El who denies that the New Israel Fund (NIF) assists in financing anti-Israel groups.
Silence is not an option! So the New JDL NY “did something about it.”
“Proof that what we (the JDL) did had an effect, we heard from a friend inside that the concert started late because they addressed the protest outside (claiming) ‘NIF does not support BDS.’” [New JDL NY]

I have to think that the famed opera tenor, Richard Tucker, who sang the Kol Nidre on Yom Kippur at Temple Emanu-El for many years, would be turning over in his grave if he knew that the Temple “fathers” allowed such desecration within the walls of Emanu-El!! Liberal Jews will be the death of us yet!!

I totally agree. This is a disgrace. Sooner or later Hashem will deal with those renegades. Although I wasn’t born when Richard Tucker passed away, I do have the recording of Kol Nidre and several opera recordings, he had a wonderful, beautiful voice.

What a lovely reminisce, Exuperancia! Yes, he was the “singer’s singer,” or, probably more accurately, “the tenor’s tenor!” His son, Barry, has carried on the legacy of his father with the annual Richard Tucker Vocal Competition for young up & coming singers in NYC (and, i think, most fittingly, at the Met Opera).. My family had the pleasure of meeting him and “wining & dining” Richard and his terrific wife, Sara, 40-plus years ago when he sang with Seattle Opera, and I think the role was Paliacci, but my memory has faded a bit after all these years!

I also have recordings of Richard Tucker’s brother in law Jan Peerce . Although sephardic, my husband’s family is ashkenazi and since my marriage I have developped a great love for the “mama loshen” and many other aspects of Yiddish culture, tradutions and cuisine, while they have also discovered the joys of our sephardic culture and music. Jan Peerce and Richard Tucker, as well as many other (prominent or not prominent but “rikhtige”) Jews who are no longer among among us would be appalled to see this sucking up to left wing dimwits.
There are no doubt Arabs in Gaza who suffer the consequences of this neverending conflict which could have been resolved ages ago but thet has NOT because of the stubborness and fanaticism of the Hamas and PA leaderships…

I think, if memory serves, there was a bit of a professional rivalry between those two great tenors of yesterday (Tucker & Peerce), but the recordings they left behind will provide a platform on which opera aficianados can argue the merits of one over the other for years to come!
I have, later in life, become aware of the absolute richness of the Sephardic Jewish traditions (music & food, in particular!), and I think it’s great if young people can explore BUTH (Ashkenazi and Sephardic) traditions! Where I grew up (in Seattle) there were the two culturally different communities, but they intermingled all the time, and their different synagogues remain repositories of the cultural heritage of both traditions.
But one thing upon which most of us can agree – and that is we must remain unified and speak as one voice when it come to defending the Jewish religion and Israel – and, sadly, the “regressive” Jews have strayed far from the path that leads to God, which so many of them have long ago rejected.

thank you so very much for your kind reply. I totally agree with you that we must speak with one voice and remain unified, even if the very orthodox, the conservative and the liberal communties don’t agree with each other as far as rites, interpretations, etc. are concerned. I hope that those misguided do realize that yearning to be embraced and accepted by leftwing liberals can only lead to their own destruction.
Other than that, I didn’t know about the rivalry between Jan Peerce and Richard Tucker, probably “jalousie de métier” like the (alleged) rivalry between Callas and Tebaldi and that of Fedora Barbieri and Giulietta Simionato among (many) others.

Nice to find like-minded RIGHT-THINKING people such as yourself! And I sort of remember the professional rivalry between Callas & Tebaldi, although in their “hey day,” I was still up to my eyeballs in rock N roll and R & B!! And that goes double for Giuletta Simionato, whom I only HEARD of when I first started following opera (in the learly 70s)! Well, all the gossip about various opera stars and their little piccadilloes are often “the stuff of legends” and just add to the mystique of the stars and the fierce loyalty of their fans!! I’m sort of sad to admit that these days I don’t follow any of them very closely, but the music DOES live on! And I can still revel in the whole aura of opera by just going to the Met Opera “at the movies” (i.e., in HDTV in the local cinema). I love the relatively cheaper tickets and the total informality of the occasion (hot dogs & popcorn!) and no need to “dress up!”
