NYPD Officers Are Retiring In Droves Over Leadership’s Handling Of Riots, Officials Say

New York City Police Department officers are retiring early after losing support from their higher-ups and from political leaders amid mass protests and riots over the death of George Floyd, according to current and former officers.

NYPD officers have worked consistent 12-hour shifts to curb the violence that has ripped through the city and destroyed dozens of businesses. Rioters have looted stores and injured hundreds of law enforcement officers, according to the police, via the New York Post.

Now, rank-and-file officers are electing to take their pensions and exit the force rather than stay in and cooperate with NYPD and political leadership that appears to be more interested in appeasing mobs than backing their police officers, an NYPD sergeant told The Washington Examiner.

“At our level, it’s hard to say, but in the past, you felt like chiefs like [Joseph] Esposito had your back. Even Ray Kelly. Without Rudy [Giuliani], or even with [Michael] Bloomberg, things have changed,” the unnamed sergeant said. “The [Sergeants Benevolent Association] and the thousands I’ve sent them to provide me with a lawyer and dental plan. Very important. No one else will back us at this point. Chiefs taking knees and humiliating themselves.”

On June 1, NYPD Chief Terence Monahan knelt in front of protesters in an effort to stop the episodes of violence that had broken out at the Floyd protests.

Former NYPD homicide detective Rob O’Donnell said that “three close friends” on the force have already retired and taken their pensions instead of spending another two or three years with the NYPD.

Bernard Kerik, a former New York City Police commissioner, appeared on Fox News on Sunday and said that a flood of retirements has hit the NYPD since the Floyd protests began.

“You have some in the hospital, but there were over 300 injuries. And the thing that scares me, judge, I’m hearing close to 600 cops have either put in their papers, or they’re talking to the department about resigning or retiring like this is insane,” Kerik told Fox News host Jeanine Pirro.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has had a strained relationship with his police force throughout his tenure, but the relationship has gotten more unsteady in the wake of the violent riots. De Blasio announced a new administrative push on Sunday to cut the budget of the NYPD and redirect the funds to other community investments.

“We’re committed to seeing a shift of funding to youth services, to social services, that will happen literally in the course of the next three weeks, but I’m not going to go into detail because it is subject to negotiation and we want to figure out what makes sense,” the mayor said without going into detail on the proposal.

The mayor has also come under harsh criticism from police unions that represent the NYPD’s captains and officers. Captains’ Endowment Association President Chris Monahan sent a letter to members on Saturday ripping de Blasio and warning that officers should be careful and expect minimal assistance from the city if they have to make a tough choice.

Quote:”We’re committed to seeing a shift of funding to youth services, to social services”. Just another drop in the already huge cronyism/nepotism bucket that subsidizes the wrong people and so typical of communism. I guess that they have to find work for all of the leftist losers with sociology, psychology. feminism and gender studies degrees but like Oxfam and most charities very little will ever reach its supposed targets.

they should strike, the way the dem leadership has made it, no violent protestor is ever going to be punished, this puts a huge target on a cop in NY. i would want to strike, and let the city burn, and when asked why… tell them the truth, tell them that the mayor and the govenor caused this.

I don’t blame them. Their boss, DeBlasio, is activity working against the best interest of the NYPD. Let the residents call the corner crack dealer to deal with the crackhead that’s breaking into their home.

Dear people of NYC. Either replace the mayor or get out. The police can not guarantee safety because of inmates running the asylum. To stop robery, rape, riot and murder you need warrior’s. Not left wing politicians.

The cop Chauvin did the knee thing so blatantly open….is this a trick??
All the blacks worldwide want preferential treatment. Slaves or no slaves leave the statues alone. leave the comedy shows alone esp Gone with the Wind what a beautiful movie. WTH is happening. right before Trump’s election rally too. It all does not add up.

Ok, you can wonder that for sure. The cops bundled him into the ambulance, not EMTs. No attempt to do CPR or anything by anyone. I could not bear to watch the funeral for 6 minutes, much less 6 hours, so was it closed casket? If so, then that’s interesting. Also, consider there have been similar cases just days later in other countries. Why would a cop in France do that when cities in the US are burning because of cops here doing it? Or was that the whole point?

And I think it does add up, just not to what they are telling you it adds up to.

The entir NYPD should give an ultimatum. Either stop the madness or there will be a strike. Give a deadline.

Unfortunately if they strike they lose 2 days pay for every day on strike. However, I agree they need to do it for two weeks or more and take the hit. The city would descend further from not chaos on people will move away in droves.

There are other ways to take an LEO job action. My favorite is that every law enforcement agency has a boatload of petty policies and procedures that are mostly ignored or the department would grind to a halt. So then follow every single policy to the letter; what are the brass going to do, fire them for following the Policy and Procedures manual? Just a thought Democrat controlled area LEOs…

When I was being singled out for harassment by my government employer years back I did exactly that, worked my day exactly by the book doing everything to the letter. It drove them absolutely nuts and in the end several of the senior staff ended up quitting even though they swore they were going to break me down and get rid of me.

Loopholes REALLY drive them bonkers. I once had sergeant get on me for not having a flashlight and key holder on my SB, it was against policy. Policy didn’t say the light had to work or where to place the holders. You can probably guess the rest…

Sampson, it’s not even about that. They are defacing statues of famous abolitionists, too. Hell, they trashed the 54th Massachusetts Monument, which commemorates an all free black regiment. THEY DON’T CARE, and nothing, not one single thing we can do will appease them. They will continue on with their anarchy (temper tantrum) until someone with some cojones puts a stop to it, or until people have just had enough.

Cops in NYC were already being doused with water regularly. Already DeBloviate said every single one got arrested that did that. Did they? Because we saw it on national news that the cops were attacked but never anything more. And I’d be surprised if NY’s bail deform laws that kicked in Jan 1 weren’t setting the people up for what’s going on now. The whole attitude is hatred toward LEOs and hugs to criminals. I feel sorry for the cops who get left holding the bag (ones that don’t quit or retire), but maybe NYC and Mrs. DeBloviate need to see what her “nirvana/utopia” of life with at least almost no cops actually looks like.

Such a strike would be illegal – and would only result in damaging the police union.

The smart move, instead, is to get out – and that’s exactly what the smart cops are doing – putting in their papers, and getting the hell out.

The rot that is the “woke” NYC electorate, De Blasio and his ilk, and the parasitic corruption of special interests have made effective policing impossible.

To any LEOs out there in Democrat land; retirement is great, I highly recommend it. Sure you’ll miss the challenge and fun of being part of the squad but that doesn’t last. The best part is your Sheriff/Chief and his brass will no longer be your supervisor. I still relish the first time I got to tell a Commander that he’s an arrogant incompetent ass and he could kiss mine. Go for it…

‘Shifting funding to youth services?’ Why hasn’t the Mayor been removed from office yesterday. He truly wants anarchy in his city. Is there no one left in NYC who objects to what he’s doing, besides Pamela.
And for officer’s to be told to expect no assistance from the city if they need it, should be an alarm to NYPD officers the city cares nothing about them and will hang them out to dry.

All police forces should be enlarged and the policemen’s pay raised. Returning Vets should automatically be taken into police forces — they have taken the oath to their country, know how to use weapons and are used to discipline. There are many returned Vets sitting in caves and tunnels in California, miserable and despairing.

Make policemen out of them.

While not supporting violent cops, if I were an officer in NYC, I would be leaving too. All cops are not bad.

You have no idea what you would do in their situation day after day year after year in life or death situations dealing with the worst “human beings” on the planet. Calling them “violent cops” is stupid. EVERYONE IS VIOLENT IN THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES. And everyone can make a mistake, or even two when they are being VIOLENTLY ATTACKED while trying to their friggn very difficult jobs.

Also a “complaint” means NOTHING. They can be lodged anonymously and they go on the permanent record. Anyone who thinks that a summary of “complaints” tells you ANYTHING about an officer without more context is a MORON.

Alexandra
Alexandra

Well, I agree with most of what you are saying, except for the moron part of course, because I think you may be calling me a moron… I would say we know enough about Derek Chauvin to know he should not have been on the streets enforcing.

No, you don’t. Hearing about a police officer’s record is meaningless unless you know the details. That is the one thing Black Activists of the truly disgusting sort will not allow, which they have now brainwashed a literal entire generation to not allow.

They don’t allow conversations about specifics, because the specifics prove that the narrative is nonsense. Once you start talking specifics, it all falls apart, so they literally DON’T ALLOW THAT CONVERSATION, WHILE YELLING TO EVERYONE HOW WE NEED TO HAVE THE “UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATIONS”.

They are very, very well-trained and brainwashed true believers. They have no shame about lying or manipulating. They enjoy every second of it.

The reason why hearing the number of complaints is meaningless is twofold.

First, you don’t even know the number of average complaints per year against officers, particularly in that city. Do you? If you don’t, you’ve already proven you’re not smart. This is incredibly important, and it didn’t even occur to you. The problem is, neither do a lot of other things.

Second, the existence of complaints doesn’t mean anything actually happened. Anyone can log a complaint, even anonymously as I understand, and it goes on your permanent record. Do you think there are many scumbags in the ghetto? Me too. Terrible people. Great ones too? OF COURSE. WE NEED TO PROTECT THEM FROM THE SCUM. THAT’S THE POINT.

Take care.
