Remove Your Broken Zillow Widgets

By
Education & Training with Retired Executive Director of Education at eXp Non-Licensed

Last week I received an email notification from ActiveRain that I was "tagged" in a comment on a blog post. It was my friend "Helpful Hannah" and today I received another from Praful Thacker.

Unfortunatey, I can't read or see the post because they both have installed Zillow Contact or other Zillow Widgets that no longer exist.  What happens? I click on the link and it results in me ending up at (and anyone who clicks on your blog post or article) to this page below.

Here's a live demonstration of what I just experienced, your prospects and clients might be as well?

As you can see in the Zillow Widget page below, they no longer have 80% of the widgets previously. Even the widgets in the featured image of this post no longer exist. In fact, the only two that are left appear to be "reviews" and a "search" widget. So go remove your broken Zillow widgets now!

Many of us have used the "contact" widget, the "how many boxes" widget, the "home value" widget etc. but if not removed from your AR Blogs, outside blogs and websites etc. you could be losing a ton of potential contacts, prospects, leads and clients. So today, remove your broken Zillow widgets.

Many people won't take the time out of their day to even tell you that your site is broken like I am right now. Most users who experience this will just close the window, leave and probably never return.

How do I fix it?

A. On ActiveRain, you'll need to go into your settings and just remove any code or HTML provided by Zillow for the specific widget you may have installed. You may also need to contact ActiveRain support for help if unable to get to it yourself.

B. Wordpress users, just go into your dashboard and select the "widgets" option under the "appearance" tab then drag and drop the Zillow widget(s) into the unused section or simply click the delete link that appears within the widget box.

C. On your website's you can simply remove the HTML code from any pages with Zillow widgets. If you have a webmaster or tech person that manages your site, send them this post.

In 2011, I wrote this piece explaining the value and importance of these Top 5 Contact Widgets which did include the customizable Zillow widget which they now no longer offer.

Since it's crashing some of your AR blogs and wordpress sites, I wanted to make this attempt to help fix this if it's happening to you here in the rain or out on your other websites and blogs. I feel better now knowing that I've brought it to your attention so you can get some much needed R&R. (repair & replace)

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, Brad Andersohn!!!

I just checked my WordPress site and it looks like my only Zillow widget is the Reviews widget.  :)

Hi Julie - That's great, be sure to check other widgets and their owners to be sure there aren't other culprits doing the same thing. Zillow widgets are not the only offenders out there.

After our conversation, and having it happen again on Praful's blog, I felt we needed to get the word out there. This is really thanks to you that everyone else will benefit. So THANK YOU!

Yet another reason that real estate agents and brokers should avoid using Zillow widgets, paying for Zillow Premier, or doing anything else "Zillow".

Brad Andersohn

Hey Fred - not to create a debate over Zillow being "good or bad" this is an issue that can happen with ANY company that provides these third party widgets, plugins, extensions, java-scripts etc.

I'd suggest looking at every widget from every company. Those Zillow widgets when they existed (and were working) were very effective and in many cases generated agents contacts.

Hi Brad

There are no Zillow widgets on my blog and there never will be.  But this is good advice for those who might have installed them.

So if you ever click on an AR members profile or blog and get that 404 error from Zillow, please let them know about this. Thx Jeff :)

Also watch out for any other widgets from other 3rd party sources because they will do the same thing and have the same results.

Brad Andersohn - thanks for the mention in your post.

And thanks a million for sharing the fix. I have removed all the references of all ZILLOW widgets from my Blog Settings.

Now I am sure I'll get many more leads from my market reports.

The thanks really goes to you and Hannah Williams, if you two weren't "Active" like you are in the "Rain" this would have never been discovered. Thanks Praful Thakkar :)

Mel - thanks for reading and commenting, you'll find the 2 widgets that Zillow does have left and available work well.

The widget  Mel Ahrens, MBA, Kelly Right Real Estate  was no longer on my site it was removed many years ago  but there was an old code that was still hiding there

Brad, zillow widgets are not the only ones we should be checking...all of ours to make sure no '404's' exist...thanks for alerting all!

Ginny - excellent point, and I've been making that point in the comments above. Thank you for popping in and reading and for also sharing how important it is to check "ALL" installed widgets to be sure there are no other 404 epidemics!  :) You rock!~

Great advice.  I never ran into the issue, but I heard of several people who were.  Another great reason to not use zillow's widgets.

Feb 12, 2017 05:37 AM
Brad Andersohn

Ryan - when they were available, they worked great. The two they do have left work just fine. The reality is you shouldn't use any widgets ever, not just Zillow's. Every other widget developer in the world will have the same issue, this applys to every widget and every company that makes them available.

Just want to make sure folks know and understand that this is NOT a rant on Zillow, just an update that their widgets are gone and no longer working.  The 404 error is a global epidemic.  :)

Haha~ Thanks Richie.

I actually had to remove 7 widgets from my SFBayArea Blog as they were getting me traffic and engagement thanks to Zillow, but now I'll have to find some good solid replacements. I'm on the hunt :-)

Great to see you, hope all is well.

Thank you, thank you, I have been notifying people about this on their blogs and no one seemed to know what was doing it. Everyone assumed the problem was mine and I could circumvent by using Mozilla Firefox or internet explorer but in Chrome they kept blocking. So glad you posted this.

That's crazy!  I've noticed that I can't get to Praful Thakkar's posts on Chrome and have to open Safari to see them!  I had no idea what was going on but, never saw a comment from anyone on his posts - and there were folks commenting on his posts - so, I thought it was my browser!  LOL  SO happy to know what the problem was!  Thanks, Brad Andersohn!!

Feb 12, 2017 07:29 PM
Brad Andersohn

Hey Debe - while it is "browser" sensative and may or may not work with different browsers, it's still an issue with any widget from any site that has gone away or removed their widgets, eventually there will be a breakdown in the connection regardless of operating systems and browsers etc.

IMHO: Best to be safe and remove any and all widgets where the creator is either non-existent or their widgets are deceased.

Thanks Debra - widgets are easy to install and can be a good thing with positive producing results. (as long as they aren't removed in the middle of you using them) If this helps just the two people that inspired the post, then it's all worth it and good :)

Set it and forget it was great for Ronco and it's cooking products, but a horrible strategy for a website!  Interesting that Zillow would show a 404 error with the text "Oops, no one seems to be home" on a 24/7/365 website.  I have a few competitors that need a sign indicating "The lights are on, but no one is home".

Jim - I remember that Ronco infomercial... hilarious!!

I also love your observation regarding the "lights being on but noboday home!" as i think we see this more and more across the country and industry as technology continues to grow and evolve.
