On the occasion of the 2020 Randol Fawkes Labour Day, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) pays tribute to workers across the length and breadth of The Bahamas.

The Bahamian people are the greatest resource of our nation. The blood, sweat and tears of our compatriots both past and present have built the economy of The Bahamas we see today. We will not forget the journey from the Burma Road Riot in 1942 and the General Strike of 1958 that paved the way for Majority Rule and Independence. Indeed it is the hard work, perseverance, commitment, dedication, talent, skills and ingenuity of our people that have built this commonwealth.

Sir Randol Fawkes after whom this day is named epitomized the Bahamian struggle for equality and workers' rights across our archipelago of islands. While we pay homage to this great Bahamian, we also remember those who stood with him at the forefront of this fight and others that have taken on the mantle.

In the midst of the greatest economic crisis confronting our nation in modern history as a result of Hurricane Dorian and COVID-19, Bahamian workers have been greatly impacted by layoffs, furloughs and redundancies. Many are facing much difficulty making ends meet and providing for their families. We believe that the indomitable Bahamian spirit will emerge from this crisis stronger and better to move our nation forward.

The DNA commemorates the fighters of the labor movement lost tragically during the 2018 Labor Day Parade. We celebrate the lives of our sisters; the Fallen Four: Sister Tabitha Haye, Sister Tami Gibson, Sister Dianne Ferguson and Sister Kathleen Fernander. Their labor was not in vain, they will never be forgotten, and we will honor their memory by continuing to stand with the workers of our country.

Happy Labour Day

Arinthia S. Komolafe

Leader, Democratic National Alliance
