Summer School Day 3: Symmetry

One of our favorite regular educational series is our set of Summer School classes. Understanding and internalizing different design concepts allows you to bring your ideas to life. With a little practice, these ideas will quickly become intuitive, leading your card designs to come together with minimal effort.

During this series, we’ll bring you videos and projects designed to help you understand these basic principles, and incorporate them into your own crafting. Not only do you get to put your student hat on, your participation means you also are in the running to win an MFT shopping spree! Keep reading for today's lesson, and all the details for submitting homework for your chance to win.

Today’s Lesson: Symmetry

Symmetry refers to positioning your elements mirrored across an imaginary line that divides your project into even segments. It’s a great method for achieving balance in your design and is a reliable means of laying out your card elements when you don’t have a lot of planning time to spare.

This masculine look from Stephanie is an incredibly cool example of symmetry. The modern color palette and simple pen-line touches elevate a primarily die-cut design, adding interest and dimension in all the right ways. Be sure to watch today's video to learn more about the decision-making process she employed to execute the concept of symmetry in her look today.

This class was great! I am not great at creating symmetry on my cards, so this is really helpful for me!

Thanks for the tips on using symmetry. I like your card very much. I will be able to apply the same techniques even w/o a die-cutting machine and I just got a Sharpie white pen as well as another brand of white gel pen. Have a great weekend and remember to take care of yourself!

I really like your method for making sure the horizontal strips were perfectly placed! Great tip and a daring card!
    Thanks for sharing.

Symmetry can be a bit tricky at times if it does not exactly mirror image but came close in my entry.

    Gail Scott August 03, 2020

I just realized that many of my cards are symmetrical! In fact, I purposefully try to “off set” my images sometimes just to challenge myself because projects I see from other crafters look so nice that way. Thanks for the lesson!
