You can indeed do this with almost any bead - but you don't need the plastic earring nut. :-) Use clear silicone caulking to fill the hole, then make a small pilot hole for the stud. Some of those nuts are actually made of silicone because some folks are allergic to plastic. Plus, they grip nicely. :-)

You can also make 'floating' miracle beads that stay put with no crimps with silicone caulking. Just fill the beads with the caulk and then stick a thin needle all the way through as a pilot. String the bead and place it where you want it. :-)
