For Alex Petrov, the accidental murder of by one of his criminal colleagues and the entrance of this girl into the foray has put a major glitch in his well thought out plans. His motives for capturing her and holding her against her will have more to do with getting to the drug deal scheduled in two days time than anything else. He wishes he can reveal himself and his plans to her but he can’t. The operation is at stake.  That’s all that matters.

Their lives hang by a thread.

It only takes one wrong move and both of them are as good as dead.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP # 2 - PERSEVERANCE

Hi there writers. Welcome to G.Spot's creative writing workshop # 2.

Before we can get into the nitty gritty of writing there is something a writer needs before they begin to follow the Yellow Brick Road to their dream come true.

PERSEVERANCE.

Perseverance is the persistance in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.

An award winning author, John Larkin once told me that writing is around 90% perseverance and 10% talent. No, you say. That's not correct. Writers are brimming with flair and genius.

Yes,  writers are imaginative, they have an insight into different human conditions and can weave their brain activity into a story people will pay money to read. Though writers may have a natural ability in writing, it can take years of training before a writer creates something that people want to read, as it takes a swimmer gruelling training sessions to achieve their goals. And what do we need to achieve out goals?

PERSEVERANCE.

Without it you can't finish the book, you can't pick yourself up following the disppointment of a publisher's rejection or have the strength to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard!) after a soul crushing review.

To go along with your unyielding PERSEVERANCE you also require one more thing - BUM GLUE at term coined by the very wise and very successful Mr Larkin. This product is definitely a determining factor in achieving your writing goals.

'BUM GLUE?' You ask.

Yes, BUM GLUE. It's what keeps you stuck to your seat while you break through the wall blocking you from developing your story and/or characters. It's what keeps you riveted to your chair even when you know what you're writing is total shit because you know you will come back to it later, stuck to your chair because of BUM GLUE, editing the bejesus out of it!

(More bum glue please!)

Seriously, don't give up. Tidying your desk so it's spick and span before you write, insisting that you need to hear the roar of the waves crashing to shore for inspiration or finding the perfect nook at a cafe does not necessarily result in a best seller. My best ideas and lines come to me when I'm super mum, ferrying children between school, sport and home with a stop at the supermarket in between or listening to my favourite tracks in the car (I do spend a lot of time in the car!). Then it's good old fashioned hard work when I get home to write that shit down.

Despite the struggle, despite the fear, despite the dejection don't give up.

Despite the lack of time, despite fatigue, despite the lack of inspiration don't give up.

WHY?

Because it is so worth it when your book is being read by people who connect with you and tell you how much they loved it.
Also, you can write Author alongside Your Occupation on forms!

So, get back to that book you're writing fellow writers, and apply plenty of glue!

See you next time!

G.Spot - Creative Writer's Workshop #1 READING & GENRE

There are many people who have a story they want to write. It can range from memoirs to a suspenseful thriller to a spine chilling horror.

Do you?

Hi there. I'm Georgie Tyler and welcome to G.Spot and my series of creative writing workshops. They're free and you can log on when ever you have some spare time and want some inspiration.

I'm a traditionally published author, with two ebooks on the virtual shelves and the third due for release in November. I'm also an English high school teacher. I love teaching creative writing at school so I thought I would extend my classroom and impart the knowledge I have acquired on my writing journey to whoever wants to join me.

WELCOME.

Okay, let's get started.

To be able to write something decent you have to be a reader. Reading is imperative and closely linked to good writing. Those who tend to write well, read books (fiction or non-fiction), magazines and newspapers. Reading broadens your vocabulary and it improves your grammar and spelling. Reading also shows you how to write particular texts.  For example, for the budding journalists, a newspaper article is set out as follows:

However, this is a creative writing workshop and most of you want to get some tips on how to write that novel you've plotted and planned for years.

I'm a romance writer. When you click onto my website, you will see the covers and blurbs of my books displayed. Though I read broadly, I LOVE to read romance novels. It is my GENRE of preference.
What is genre? Genre is a style or category of literature. There are many genres people like to read. Romance, sci-fi, fantasy, horror to name a few. Decide what genre you enjoy to read mostly, because you will tend to write in that genre. I don't read many sci-fi books so it would be silly of me to attempt to write in that genre.
When you've decided on your preferred genre, immerse yourself in those books. When I was beginning to get serious about my writing I read romance novels and only romance for about a year. It was an invaluable exercise.

Each genre has particular elements and features that make them fit into a genre. For example, fantasy usually includes:
  • a portal to another world
  • anthropomorphic characters
  • magic
  • a quest or journey of some sort.

Romance novels must have:
  • A hero and a heroine and they must be likeable (or hero/hero or heroine/heroine depending on the romantic situation!)
  • They must meet early on in story
  • There must a reason why they can't be together
  • Lots of romantic tension is important and
  • A 'happily ever after' is a must.

In conclusion, you should READ as much as you can in the GENRE you want to write in. It seems basic, simple and pretty obvious but it is important to becoming a successful writer. I have learned that the writing journey is a slow one and to be successful, whether success for you is finishing one chapter, developing your characters, completing your book or publication there are many things to learn and it takes time. I think that has been the hardest thing for me to come to terms with in this profession; there are no shortcuts.

So, settle in for the ride, subscribe to my blog and we'll take this journey together.

Until next time, HAPPY READING!

Georgie

A Day in the Life of a Romance Writer

Sipping on my well deserved glass of wine, I reflect on my day.

Murder, bikies, a club called Hellfire and hot sex!

In between all of this I've walked the dog, baked a batch of brownies, marked about 100 senior creative writing exams, confirmed a sleep over for my daughter at her besties house and cooked a roast!

What's your day been like?

Blurb:

She's about to find out that nothing is fair when it comes to war except perhaps, the healing power of love.
When Ariadne Tate takes a deployment to Sudan with a medical aid organisation, romance is the last thing on her mind...but Dr Ford Gosden puts a glitch in her plans. Too damn attractive for his own good and a thoroughly nice guy, Ford slowly seeps under Ariadne's skin.

But Sudan is not a stable place to form a relationship, and as political tension escalates in the region, Ariadne has no choice but to focus on her job and her safety. Under the protection of a UN convoy, she heads out into the war-torn countryside — and the unthinkable happens. Captured and held hostage by a renegade with no chance of escape, Ariadne's hope for a new life with the man she loves begins to fade and the fight for her life begins.
