Paris’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs will host a new retrospective on Elsa Schiaparelli (1890–1973), entitled Shocking! Les mondes surréalistes d’Elsa Schiaparelli (Shocking! The Surreal World of Elsa Schiaparelli), and running from July 6, 2022 to January 22, 2023 in the Christine & Stephen A. Schwarzman fashion galleries.

Schiaparelli drew much of her inspiration from the avant-garde movement in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, and began her label in the city in 1927. The exhibition features 520 works, including 272 by Schiaparelli herself, displayed alongside paintings, sculpture, jewellery, perfumes, ceramics, posters and photographs by her friends and contemporaries, including Man Ray (with whom Schiaparelli worked, with his Dada magazine Société Anonyme), Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau, Méret Oppenheim, and Else Triolet.

Other featured works include those designed to honour Schiaparelli, by Yves Saint Laurent, Azzedine Alaïa, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, and the current creative director of the revived Schiaparelli label, Daniel Roseberry.

Nathalie Crinière is behind the exhibition’s scenography.
