Ed Markey: ‘Disarm’ All Police Officers of ‘Weapons of War,’ Ban Tear Gas

Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) on Monday called to “disarm” all police officers of “weapons of war” and demanded a nationwide ban on various nonlethal forms of protection, including tear gas.
Markey, who recently won his primary race in Massachusetts as he seeks reelection to the U.S. Senate, wrote, “Portland police routinely attack peaceful protestors with brute force. We must disarm these officers, and every other police department in America, of weapons of war,” adding he supports a nationwide ban on tear gas and other nonlethal tools police use to protect themselves and community members.

Markey’s statement follows more than three months of protests and unrest in Portland, as well as in several other U.S. cities, sparked by the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.
The protests have often devolved into violent and destructive riots driven by anti-police sentiment, with dozens of arrests made in Portland in just the past two weeks for felony rioting, felony assault, reckless endangerment, and more.
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) released a statement September 10 confirming that individuals have said “they intend to kill or injure officers” and have “scrawled [threats to commit acts of violence] on police facilities and other property.”
In one instance, a man was lit on fire as a result of people throwing Molotov cocktails at police. Police used CS gas, a common form of tear gas, as a crowd dispersion tool in response to the Molotov cocktails.
In several instances, according to police, arsonists have attempted to burn down the PPB’s North Precinct facility while people were inside. Most recently, on September 7, a crowd started a fire outside of the precinct building, chanting, “Burn it down,” prompting police to make 15 arrests.
Markey’s call to disarm police of “weapons of war” and tear gas did not include any solutions for how police should manage the ongoing rioting or protect themselves as they are being attacked.
It did, however, include his proposed legislation called the No Tear Gas or Projectiles Act. Markey states in his proposal, cosponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), that “our streets are not meant to be battlefields, and law enforcement shouldn’t be using weapons of war against protestors and other Americans.”
The progressive senator’s demands echo a recent directive from Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) that Portland police cease using CS gas. “During the last hundred days Portland, Multnomah County, and state police have all relied on CS gas where there is a threat to life safety,” Wheeler said in a video statement. “We need something different. We need it now.”
Oregon State Police described the mayor’s order as “reckless and short sighted.”
Portland police responded that it was dangerous, stating, “Banning the lawful use of CS will make it very difficult to address this kind of violence without resorting to much higher levels of physical force, with a correspondingly elevated risk of serious injury to members of the public and officers.”

Ban tear gas at peaceful protests. It’s time to bring back mustard gas. Seriously the Geneva Protocol against its use was almost a bloody century ago.
Peaceful protests should get mustard gas because they only deserve the very best.

Senator Markey is mad because all the police unions are endorsing Trump. Tyrants always must control the police, or they never get to grab power on the streets. So Markey wants to disarm the police, to make street control easier.

VX has been around since the early fifties. And, has been developed further, as recently as two years ago. It’s one hundred times, if not more, lethal than sarin.
Mustard gas has been around since 1908. I’ll stick with the classics.
Don’t want to be too harsh on blm. After all, they’re simply “peaceful protestors”.

Agreed. If you want to see the consequences of disarming the cops, do a search for “North Hollywood bank shootout” which happened in the ’90s. All the street cops had was 9mm handguns against two bank robbers who had them outgunned.
They had to commandeer rifles from a nearby store and wait a half hour for a police sniper unit to arrive.

Hopefully, the more the likes of Democrat Senator Markey extols such madness, anti-law enforcement rhetoric, voters will grasp the Democrats are pro-sedition, betrayers, anti-police, endorsers of BLM, ANTIFA, Anarchists, and criminals, generally. It is time for America’s electorate to determine if they want to retain their Civil Liberties, Constitutional Rights, or underfoot of a totalitarian, Marxist-Fascist regime, the faux-Democratic Party.

Senator Markey is from Massachusetts, the liberals fortress, socialism’s nexus in the US.
You can do and say whatever you want there, as long as it follows the party line.
The Obama’s moved there for good reason.
This bastion of liberalism is so deep-rooted, that back in 1969 Senator Ted Kennedy drunk-drove and killed his ‘secretary’ one night after a party out on the cape, and a week later, only pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident. And he was covered for by the press and his Party.

In his very first roll call vote as a US Senator, Markey responded “Present” when his name was called. “Present”….because that is how his hero, the Kenyan mozzlem, voted when he himself was a member of Congress.

Lets start with the Congressional security. Then move on to personal protection details. Next, the police where he lives. Lets see how happy he will be when the rioters come after him and all the police can do is say “Move on” and nobody does.
Weapons of war? We think today of guns and automatic weapons. It all depends on the time. Rocks, sticks, clubs, spears, arrows, knives were all used as weapons of war. Want to band them, go ahead. Then all you have left is fists, feet and teeth.
No CS gas, pepper spray, pepper pellets? Tell the rioters to stop throwing rocks, bottles of urine or ice, fire bombs, stop using fireworks as weapons, and to drop their lead pipes and other assorted tools of destruction. Then there would be no need for the non-lethal weapons by the police.
The military has developed weapons that use ultra low frequency that make you sick and puke. That acceptable senator? Oh wait, its militaristic weaponry. Thoughts about water cannon?
How in the world did this not to clever monkey get elected?
BTW, the rioter set on fire; he set himself on fire when he was trying to throw a Molotov cocktail. No pity for him.
