Maine retaliates against restaurant owner who re-opened despite state lockdown
‘We’ve had enough of it’
By: Blaze News, May 02, 2020
Story continues below advertisementThe state of Maine has retaliated against a restaurant owner who re-opened his establishment in defiance of Gov. Janet Mills’s stay-at-home order.
Rick Savage, who owns Sunday River Brewing Co. in Bethel, told Fox News host Tucker Carlson this week that he would re-open his restaurant to dine-in customers one month sooner than Mills’s most recent lockdown order allows. He said he did not think the state would do anything to him, and even read on-air what he said was Mills’s phone number.
“We’ve had enough of it,” Savage told Carlson.
On Friday, Savage made good on his promise.According to the Bangor Daily News, Savage re-opened his restaurant around noon on Friday, serving roughly 250 people by the early evening. He did implement social distancing guidelines for customers.
Unfortunately, health and liquor license inspectors also showed up and revoked the licenses that Savage needs to legally operate, effectively closing his businesses once again, WCSH-TV reported.
More from WMTW-TV:
The Maine Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages found Rick Savage was not compliant with Gov. Mills’ executive order when he reopened the Sunday River Brewing Company Friday afternoon.
The bureau confirmed to WMTW News 8 that the Department of Health and Human Services suspended the restaurant’s health license and could take further action if Savage reopens on Saturday without a health license. The suspension automatically suspends that restaurant’s liquor license.
Upon learning that his licenses had been revoked, Savage initially said he would continue operating and accept further fines. However, he later shut down the restaurant.
“We will be closed until further notice as of Friday May 1st. Thank you all for support today,” Savage posted to Facebook.
Despite having fewer than 1,200 COVID-19 cases, Mills has implemented strict lockdown guidelines in Maine that include not re-opening restaurants and much of the hospitality industry until at least June.

Governor is correct . Is the restaurant owner going to pay for those who get covid from being at his restaurant ?
Suresh, your response is representative of a big part of the problem today. People who are oh so willing to allow the Governors to abuse power and violate the Constitution, and who are so ready to provide cover for those corrupt officials, living in fear and trembling, and expecting everyone else to be forced to do so as well. This restaurant owner even enforced social distancing, yet people like you still create nonsense excuses for the vile actions of the Governor involved. You are absolutely wrong, and need to grow up. I don’t know if you’re a Democrat or not, but your support of these fascist tactics indicates that you ought to be. No, the Governor is NOT correct, and her action is without excuse or merit.
So Trump also abused his power to place lockdown ?
Trump didn’t put a “Lockdown” on us. He put out the social distancing guidelines. The midget Hitler, Fauci, wanted to act like a dictator.
@Suresh, your question is intellectually dishonest. The White House didn’t institute lockdowns, those came from state governors and city mayors. Every story that shows overreach of power and fascist lockdown enforcement are on those local levels. This is a matter of freedom of choice, nothing less. If some want to isolate and hide in fear and hysteria, they can do so, for that is their choice. For those of us who want to work and provide for ourselves, that is our choice as well. The criminalization of normal behavior and the outlawing of freedom of association by edict for a fictional crisis is inexcusable, and I hope that voters retain very long memories. I hope that every offending politician that participated in the farce loses their job in future elections. I also hope that lawsuits abound, holding the corrupt and vile politicians accountable for their unconstitutional actions. My original comment to you stands. You are on the wrong side of the discussion.
go back to india…or pakistan. They have more of your mindset
you are A class moron. Pandemic emergency allows govt to place restrictions. Go back to your Hill cave you hillybilly
Actually not according to the Constitution it doesn’t. Those are politicians, media and some courts that say that, but not the Constitution.
Restaurant owner’s don’t pay for those that get food poisoning, salmonella or a contagious disease from being at their restaurants, so no, they are not going to pay.
Grocery stores don’t pay either.
Governor is a tyrant and is enforcing things that she has no authority. No, the owner isn’t liable for other people’s actions. If folks want to eat in his restaurant and understand the consequences, then that’s their right. People are now aware, that we have a virus and we can take precautions, just like we do while driving a car. You are part of the problem and lack common sense.
Pandemic emergency gives govt power to place restrictions.
Not for months on end.
No, in fact it doesn’t provide any power to violate the rights of the individual but you are far too lazy to actually read the constitution. Either that, you’re a useless communist, idiot.
then enjoy the pandemic. LOL !
Or is that conspiracy theory too ?
Sheep much? Geeze stay in your house and panic. Eat toilet paper.
Trump should respond by opening Acadia National Park the biggest tourist attraction in Maine and award Mr Savage and his employees a temporary federal concession to run all food and beverage facilities in Acadia National Park until Janet Mills ends the house arrest of the people of Maine. Send all Covid complaints and BS lawsuits to Suresh.
CALL THAT IDEA IN = Trump just might do it…be great.
I agree with you. Trump just might do it. He loves for people to get to work!
“Tyrants get the rope!” -protest sign
Amen to that!
Why waste a perfectly decent length of rope? A cheap plastic garbage bag could do the job just as well and it’d be almost poetic justice. (Sorry, I’m super grumpy today and we’re still stuck here at Phase O- although traffic is practically back to pre-shutdown levels- and many forbidden businesses are reopening anyway).
Hong Kong is proof that is makes no difference whether restaurants remain open or not because all restaurants have remained opened and the virus outbreak was contained from January to April. In January 2020 there were daily flights from Wuhan to Hong Kong. A HongKonger virus-super-spreader boarded the Diamond Princess cruise ship in January 2020 in Hong Kong which resulted in the ship becoming infected. So for the virus to spread so quickly from Wuhan to Diamond Princess means the super-spreader must have traveled a lot and the travelling must have required the super-spreader to use many restaurants.
“How are we to get them back?”. Make a list of all active good doctors and ask them to sign a declaration of independence from medical tyrants; if the majority sign then we have a revolution.
This is not 100% on the subject but it kind of ties in with what is happening. Suppose Bidet gets in and gets a democom Senate and House. Stuff like this will happen all the time, plus you can be sure of higher taxes, more business killing regulations, higher minimum wage, more third world scum to be supported by taxpayers, open borders allowing more parasites in, etc. I am sure there have been very few who haven’t lost quite a bit in the stock market if they were invested. If this would happen, I don’t think there would be any hope of ever recovering your losses.
In an honest election I don’t think Bidet would get elected but when is the last time we had one?
In the land of the blind, the one eyed biotch is queen
Magic 8 ball says: He’ll be appearing on Tucker Carlson again soon.
Along with Tucker’s introduction of the pro-bono lawyer willing to represent Mr. Savage and his business.
Most of these complaints are emanating from Blue State residents upset over their Leftist Governors trampling over their civil liberties. Smells like buyers remorse to me.
ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES. LESSON LEARNED.
There is a section in our Constitution that explicitly states that no government official including a president– has the legal authority to place citizens on lockdown.
This guy could take this to federal court and win. He has been damaged
YOUR SOURCE?
The Constitution of both Maine and the United States. Maybe you should read it and get familiar with it.
Sorry but you are punting. His Constitutional rights have in my opinion and unquestionably been violated. But it is very simply a violation of the Bill of Rights, as codified by the Ist and 5th Amend. I was not saying otherwise only questioning the frivolousness of the statement. To which I can add also to your non-specific comment! I have copies of the Constitution and the Text book for Constitutional Law on my desk and I use them. I am a retired Judge and studied Constitutional Law. I would like to see many of these cases brought to court on the due process clause which I am sure the states will fall back on and must be settled. I speak for the US Constitution, not that of Maine, But that of Maine is immaterial if it violates that of the nation.
The Dems know the accurate polls are showing that Trump is polling the highest in polling history
They have no hope of winning they are now pushing the envelope for agitation and even civil war
Their excuse is the pandemic but they fail to realize Trump left the use of excessive force on their shoulders not his.
The course of action I’d suggest is a course of action I can’t suggest.
Why can’t you suggest that which is actually LAW.
The biggest problem is how to stop people from electing the gestapo.
Remember in November.
This is TREASON on the part of these “governors”, “mayors”, and “law enforcement” …. they MUST BE DEALT WITH AS ANY OTHER TRAITOR SHOULD BE DEALT WITH.
Trump should be issuing orders to arrest any and all that are breaching the Constitution and committing TREASON.
I am not advocate for violence, but now and then it solves the puzzle. And like the markets: we are overdue for a correction: repubs and gems alike.
No more Democrats…
Even if they’re only running fo dog catcher.
People of Maine need to swarm their capitol and her house.
People of Maine need to swarm their capitol and her house.
Will Maine and its governor pay for the employees’ expenses such as food and housing? Will the state take on the debts of the restaurant owner? I believe not.
If people know the risks, take personal precautions and the restaurant takes precautions, then going to the restaurant means knowing your risks. If you don’t want to go there, its your decision. If you want to go there, its also your decision. Maybe the state authorities should start treating citizens as the adults they are and not wards that must be mothered every minute.
How does it happen that particularly in the northeastern US, where the original thirteen colonies who revolted against tyranny are primarily situated, begin to emulate the repressionist regime against whom they led the revolt?
Democrats
It’s ALWAYS demoncrats. They are communists and would be executioners if you don’t toe their line. They are evil. Yes, I mean EVIL.
5 of them were in the South: GA, SC, NC, VA and MD. When my ancestors came over from Europe in the 1600s, they had the good sense to go to SC and GA. Eventually some of them located in north FL where I was born 70 years ago
SOLIDARITY ?!
All these draconian laws are from liberal states.
In Texas the bars and restaurants are opening along with the beaches, local parks, and state parks. People are wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Instead of petty tyranny and continued collapse Texans are being trusted to use their good judgment with a lot of friendly peer pressure to be safe. The elderly and those with health issues are being urged to stay home and young people urged to have vritual visits with older relatives this Mother’s Day.
This is madness for the state to be able to do this!!!!!!
The Tyranny we are experiencing is the worst thing to ever happen to America since the Civil War.
Democrat governors, mayors, and local authorities are conspiring to keep their states locked down in an effort to collapse the US economy and defeat Trump in November. This is politics – not public health. If you resent being locked up and locked down PROTEST the lockdown in Maine like they protested in Michigan – then VOTE REPUBLICAN in November and send these political tyrants packing while you still can!
Again and again democrats in power show us how a dictatorship under a democrat/socialist president would look like ! Don’t vote them in.
TYRANNY THY NAME IS DEMOCRAT.
Unconstitutional laws should not be followed, NOR ENFORCED. The bureaucrats have way too much power. They are backed up by law enforcement, so it is near impossible to go against them. We need more brave, intelligent law enforcement, like the Sheriff in CA that told the dumbass Governor that he would not enforce the beach closures. Unfortunately, a lot of law enforcement is on a power trip to control people, no matter how ridiculous the laws may be.
