Corona Vaccine Design Earns Israeli Scientist a US Patent
The patent covers a vaccine-making process that targets the most vulnerable point in a coronavirus’ structure, representing a key step for any new vaccine.

Story continues below advertisementThe United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted a patent to Dr. Jonathan Gershoni of Tel Aviv University for an innovative vaccine design for the corona family of viruses, the university announced Sunday.
Gershoni, a professor of biology at the university’s School of Molecular Cell Biology and Biotechnology, is one of the first to get a corona-related patent as researchers worldwide work overtime to develop potential vaccines and drugs to fight the pandemic.
Using Gershoni’s technique, the potential vaccine targets the novel coronavirus’s Achilles’ heel, its Receptor Binding Motif (RBM), a critical structure that enables the virus to bind to and infect a target cell.
According to Prof. Gershoni, the vaccine would reconstruct the coronavirus’s RBM, a tiny feature of its “spike” protein. Though the virus uses many different proteins to replicate and invade cells, the “spike” protein is the major surface protein that it uses to bind to a receptor — another protein that acts like a doorway into a human cell. After the spike protein binds to the human cell receptor, the viral membrane fuses with the human cell membrane, allowing the genome of the virus to enter human cells and begin infection.
“We have been working on coronaviruses for the last 15 years, developing a method of reconstructing and reconstituting the RBM feature of the spike protein in SARS CoV and subsequently in MERS CoV,” explained Gershoni. “The moment the genome of the new virus was published in early January 2020, we began the process of reconstituting the RBM of SARS CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and expect to have a reconstituted RBM of the new virus soon. This will be the basis for a new vaccine, which could be ready for use within a year to a year and a half.”
The spike protein is quite large, containing about 1,200 amino acids. Some researchers have limited their research to a region of the spike known as the receptor binding domain (RBD) that comprises some 200 amino acids. However, the problem is that these relatively large areas have a variety of targets, and the immune system produces antibodies for all of them indiscriminately – reducing the effectiveness of a potential vaccine.
Gershoni cautioned that while his development is a first step, functionally reconstituting the RBM would be very challenging, but it would be an extremely effective basis for a vaccine.
“The smaller the target and the focus of the attack, the greater the effectiveness of the vaccine,” he said. “The virus takes far-reaching measures to hide its RBM from the human immune system, but the best way to ‘win the war’ is to develop a vaccine that specifically targets the virus’s RBM.”
The university filed another patent application after Gershoni’s research team completed their initial steps toward reconstituting the new SARS CoV2’s RBM, which could be used as a basis for a new vaccine.
“We should be able to isolate RBM-based vaccine candidates in the next month or two,” he said. “The discovery and production of a functional RBM for the new coronavirus is fundamental and critical for the production of the vaccine we propose.”
Gershoni concluded that successfully isolating a functional RBM would allow the pharmaceutical industry to incorporate it into a new vaccine. Such a vaccine could be produced in a few months, but would then need to be tested in clinical trials that could take up to a year.

Context: Iran has been actively and frequently harassing shipping and military vessels near the Hormuz Straights in the last 2 weeks. Hormuz is a narrow choke-point in the Persian Gulf that big oil tankers must pass through. Right now Iran is in bad shape, with a serious Covid-19 epidemic, super low prices for their oil exports, and very tough US sanctions. All this could be fixed if they gave up nukes and stopped exporting terrorism.

I didn’t. It does seem like you relish the idea of Iranians facing death through sanctions. Those sanctions focus on the lives of civilians because of a claim about nukes. But, the real lovers of dog meat are flips. I attended more than one flip barbecue and dog meat was featured. And, the head had a special place of honor. Although the tagalongs (flips) find dog meat a treat, the real delicacy for them is the head.

It’s just that I have known many South Koreans and none of them has, to my knowledge, ever eaten dog.
When we had our office in the Nauru Building, Beach Road, Saipan, MP, I had a lot of flips working for me. They all LOVED barbecued dog. And, the head was the dish of honor.

Long very involved history. After the Spanish American War, Guam became a U.S. Territory and remains so, to this day. Germany took over all of the Mariana Islands, sans Guam. Following WWI, the Treaty of Versailles confiscated all of Germany’s territories/colonies. They were parsed out to member states of the League of Nations and … Japan got the Northern Marianas.
Following WWII, many of the islands of Micronesia and a few others became United Nation’s Trust Territories. The Northern Marianas negotiated a Covenant with the United States. Then it went to plebiscite and the citizens/residents of the islands (Northern Marianas) became a U.S. Commonwealth and everyone turned in their Trust Territory of Micronesia passports for U.S. passports.

The map of the Marianas islands doesn’t show Saipan because it’s far away to the N. of the Marianas islands, it’s almost closer to Taiwan than the marianas islands.

Where did you get your map? Find Guam. Now go north until you find Rota, The next island north, and the largest of the Northern Marianas chain (approximately 50 square miles) is Saipan. The next north is Tinian, The Northern Mariana chain runs to within 250 nautical miles of Japan. None of the islands are anywhere close to The Republic of China (what commie lovers call “Taiwan”).

On Tuesday, Santa Clara County Public Health officials announced that an autopsy revealed a patient died of the virus on February 6. Since Covid-19 patients survive for about 3 weeks before passing, that means the virus was prevalent in California when China was still denying it was even infectious between humans.
The theory that parts of of California have by now acquired ‘herd immunity’ to Covid-19 now seems credible. Herd Immunity refers to to what happens when large numbers of a population get the disease and then become immune to it. If this gets to 15% or more, the population becomes progressively less likely to catch the disease from others. Maybe this explains why the epidemic in California has been somewhat mild.

Off topic – animal lovers –
I can not speak to Israel’s potential vaccine but I can speak directly to other vaccines. My spouse and I never take any vaccines. Our kids only had the required ones. Today it’s scary how many are now required on immature immune systems, babies. They are STRONGER germs injected. It’s no longer a mild form injected. Whether an immune system is immature for small children or for older people with a weaker one, I think one should proceed with caution.
Autism in NJ is through the roof! ALL settlements made on vaccines accused of causing this had the condition of NOT disclosing the evidence of why they settled. These vaccines were used on immature immune systems – babies and toddlers.
A few years back we stumbled into an awkward truth about animal vaccines. A rabies vaccine is NJ state required, so our pets would get the minimum shots needed to satisfy the state. Now we don’t. They are older and indoors. One cat was behaving strangely. So we took Charlie, our orange tabby, to the vet. After blood work drawn and other testing he was diagnosed with bone cancer. Later it was determined to be on his hind leg.
The first question from a new vet in the practice, asked me if he was getting his rabies shots in the scruff of the neck or the hind leg. For Charlie, it was the hind leg. This was before we knew the cancer was in the hind leg. She looked relieved. So I asked her what difference did it make. She quietly told me the veterinarian community is up in arms because the vaccines have gotten stronger and cancer is often the outcome but NJ state requires it. There is no hope if it’s injected in the neck whereas if it is the hind leg, that can be amputated. With indescribable angst we did have that done otherwise he had no chance.
We were told he was clean prior to the surgery through other testing etc. but he wasn’t. He lost his hearing and his pupil dilations were not in synch. He amazingly got around well after the surgery but it only bought him four months. Four month later he stopped eating and sure enough it was back. The x-rays shocked me. His internal organs were marbleized – meaning they were no longer visible. It was horrifying. We eventually had the vet come to the house, I held him and he was put to sleep. Till this day, I regret putting him through all that. I would not do that again with an older cat. Sometimes you have to let go…sooner than you would like.

As long as this vaccine has nothing to do with Mr. Gates and his 7 billion people-surveillance-vaccine-program it may be useful.
But if it would become a law to get vaccinated by it, I would absolutely fight it.
We cannot compare a vaccine to prevent influenza and other Coronavirus caused diseases etc., with vaccines which prevent for example measles, chickenpox, infantile paralysis etc.
It is – with very few exceptions – no one but us who decide what is good for us and our children – and people like Gates and any other professional and dubious do-gooder may have the right to recommend their opinions and products, but producers and lobbyists never should be entitled to force them on us.
