He would have had to be sure of victory and would have waited till Germany was exhausted by war with The West and then move in to collect territory. Well you’re definitely right about WWII history being twisted by leftists and their biggest twist is when they assert that the NAZIS were right wing. Their policies and name were all totally socialist. They hated free capitalism, and their policies were socialist. The left likes to confuse corporate, crony, capitalism with true capitalism. The NAZI high command was riddled with homosexuals and pagans just as modern leftism is. I still have great doubts about Stalin attacking Germany especially after the spectacular German military successes in 1940 and 1941, They also had a Japanese presence in the far east and the political situation in America looked like there was no way it was going to war anytime soon. Russia had been severely humiliated by Japan in 1905 so they respected Japanese capabilities. As far as a plan to come in and attack Germany from behind during a trench stalemate in France, I have no doubt Stalin had that intent. Germany crushing France in 6 weeks astounded the entire world at the time.

Japan was part of the Axis. As such it had an agreement with
Germany to attack the USSR. When Germany attacked first they found everything on the front line ready for the soviet attack, men, munitions, aircraft, supplies, AFVs artillery. Now, unless you intend to attack very soon, militarily you NEVER do that as it makes it impossible to defend and then counterattack. That was why the first German attacks were so successful and so easy.
Now you have missed the Zhukov operation in 1938-9 in
Mongolia and specifically Khalkin-Gol where his armour literally tore the
Japanese Army to shreds. He could have continued and taken most of Manchuria with ease but Stalin did not want a real war with Japan with Germany worrying him in the west. This was solved by the Nuremberg ignored Moscow-Berlin pact which gave Stalin much more territory(Baltic states, eastern Poland, Bessarabia etc but it also meant that he had to
move his border defences up to the new line and build new defences. The latter never received much attention..Funny that! With Germany on the other side and Mein Kampf readily available to read.
Instead they packed the border with assault troops, armour,artillery and attack aircraft, scarcely the actions of someone intending to defend.
At this time the phoney war was running, but when France collapsed so quickly a panic set in and some attempt to build defences. Icebreaker was based upon Germany becoming bogged down in trench warfare in the west so that Stalin could sit back and pick the perfect moment to attack Germany from behind and run over the whole of Europe and that was his stated intention.
However, when Germany turned its eyes on the UK the border
continued to fill up with attack formations. However the 1938 Red army purges had badly affected the middle ranking officers more than the high ranking ones and infantry divisions were not well trained while soviet AFVs were poor(T34 and KV1 excluded…3% of the total in 1941 May) and poorly used. Most aircraft were obsolete also. In number it was the largest defence force on the planet and equivalent to the next 5 in total numbers.

When Germany failed to win the Battle of Britain and the invasion deferred eventually permanently, Stalin knew he was running out of
time but viewed all allied decrypts of German plans as attempts to pull him in too early. When Germany struck into the Balkans and Greece and the Aegean he actually relaxed thinking that he had them now and he set the date for the attack.
This is where it becomes hazy as there is no documentation on this and one would expect that from the “honest” communists. Hitler who was really annoyed by the necessity to take the Balkans and Greece as it lost him 6 weeks of good weather and it is possible that Stalin played a part in this as he had numerous agents in Yugoslavia including an advisor to the then king and he wanted the time himself.

The movement of the troops and armoured divisions involved
in the Balkans and back was so rushed that the men were tired and the vehicles needed service..this explains so much about December 1941 where both simply faded in the snow even before the Siberian troops arrived.
Now as a part of his 1933 New Deal FDR opened up many new federal
bureaucracies and I have often wondered who was responsible for the selection of candidates there as it is guesstimated that 10% were soviet sleeper agents.
This was not just confined to lower echelons but all the way to the top where Harry Hopkins the chief mediator with the USSR committed many treasonous dealings with them. But IMO he was a scapegoat as all were at the direct order of FDR who IMO was a communist sympathiser.

When Japan attacked China the atrocities even shocked the
Nazis and the USA threatened sanctions if Japan continued. They were ignored. Now this is where is becomes muddy as an oil embargo could have been introduced far earlier than it was but it was not (The USA suppled most of Japans oil).
What is interesting here IMHO is that the USA under FDR appeared
to reverse its attitude politically towards China, the home of the “yellow
peril” funny that! The US oil embargo only came into effect after Germany
invaded the USSR. Why was this? it was extremely convenient timing for Stalin as it forced Japan to attack into SEA and the pacific to gain the Borneo oil as the ME was no available as well. To do so, required that they negate the USA in the Philippines and in Hawaii. This meant that NO possible attack on Siberia as promised was possible. Stalin IMO organized this via FDR or Hopkins as the timing was too perfect and he knew this the same day that it was decided by the Japanese as Richard Sorge an attaché in the German embassy was a soviet spy.
This allowed Stalin to pull out his well trained , well equipped Siberian divisions who saved the bacon before Moscow. All rather convenient for Stalin.
Stalin went into a tailspin for 2 weeks after the invasion and gave no advice, no help and no orders this was the effect it had. He had been pre-empted and he knew it. I have no doubt of this this is why I believe it. Only Hitler could defeat Stalin and vice versa as no democratic county could handle the necessary casualties as we are too soft and they both knew it. IMO Stalin was the lesser evil but now we suffer the fruits of his 1930s invasion of the west.

Read the books(Icebreaker in an online pdf) before you comment further as we otherwise waste both of our times but do note that 99% of WW2 historians are Leftists and biased WRT Stalin and it is impossible to have any view not contaminated by them. I was lucky as I knew about this before I read them.

My apologies if I sounded rude as I did not mean to so do. We still have NOT had unfettered access to all soviet records and those released that were negative towards Stalin had political value (Katyn Wood etc.) for those in charge at the time. I doubt that we will ever find the truth as communism like islam and the Left do not value truth unless it fist their narrative. I agree with most of what you say as accurate but don’t believe for a minute that Japan was ever going to actually attack the USSR. Just because the Russians did indeed inflict some defeats on the Japanese in Mongolia doesn’t negate the danger of Japanese attack in the eyes of Stalin. I remind that the petroleum embargo didn’t take place until after Germany had already attacked the USSR.
I’m not going to doubt the amount of collusion bordering on treason that the FDR administration engaged in with ‘Uncle Joe’.
I still don’t believe Stalin was going to attack what during the summer of 1941 seemed to be an almost invincible well oiled, well led machine like the German Army appeared to be. The German success in Yugoslavia and especially far off Greece and Crete was impressive considering the terrain and logistics involved and couldn’t be lost on Russian eyes.
If Napoleon could take Moscow from Paris a hundred and thirty years earlier, what might Hitler achieve from Berlin? I think Stalin was terrified of the German potential and his actions appear to back that. They were delivering crucial raw materials to Germany up to the attack and Stalin was still purging the Red Army.
