French expert says second study shows malaria drug helps fight coronavirus

Story continues below advertisementParis (AFP) – The controversial French professor who believes the anti-malaria drug chloroquine can help beat the coronavirus, has claimed that a new study he has conducted confirms its “efficiency” at combatting the virus.
But several other scientists and critics of microbiologist Didier Raoult, who heads the infectious diseases department of La Timone hospital in Marseille, were quick to cast doubt upon his findings.
They said the testing was not carried out in a controlled study and that the results were purely “observational”.
Dr Raoult, whose theory has been taken up by US President Donald Trump, said his new study of 80 patients showed that four out of five of those treated with the drug had “favourable” outcomes.
He had earlier reported that after treating 24 patients for six days with hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin, the virus disappeared in all but a quarter of them.
The research has not yet been peer reviewed nor formally published in a medical journal.
No stranger to controversy, the colourful scientist with shoulder-length blond hair and grey beard, insists that the Chinese pulmonary expert Zhong Nanshan observed a similar pattern.
Results questionedRaoult’s critics have pointed to problems with the protocol of his testing and worrying side effects of the drug.
Fakemed, a group of scientists against fake news in health, lambasted the 68-year-old professor.
After Raoult released his latest findings on the internet over the weekend, Professor Francois Balloux of University College, London, tried to dampen talk that the drug could be a silver bullet.
“No, (this is) not ‘huge’ I’m afraid,” he said on Twitter.
“This is an observational study (i.e. not controlled) following 80 patients with fairly mild symptoms. The majority of patients recover form #COVID19 infection, with or without #Hchloroquine and #Azithromycin treatment.”
Statistician Tim Morris of the university’s clinical trials unit was even more scathing.
“If hydroxychloroquine turns out to be useful,” he tweeted, “it’s a shame that this group will be praised as heroes and prophets instead of held to account for the misinformation and self-promotion they’ve been churning out at a critical time.”
Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, which is often sold as Plaquenil, have been hailed as a potential “gamechangers” by Trump, but US government experts are as yet unconvinced, with Dr Anthony Fauci, the head of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, calling the results so far “anecdotal”.
At least one person has already died in the US after self-medicating with a non-pharmaceutical version of the drug used for cleaning fish tanks.
Fears of shortages
Fears have also being raised that stockpiling of the drug will deprive people who are already being treated with it for malaria, lupus and certain types of arthritis.
Dr Philippe Gautret, who was part of the team behind Raoult’s latest findings, admitted that they only used the combination of drugs on “patients who had not been showing signs of being seriously ill after admission” to the hospital.
“Our strategy was precisely to treat them at that stage to stop the disease getting to a more serious stage,” he told AFP.
“A doctor can and must think like a doctor and not like a methodological researcher,” Raoult wrote in an article for the French Le Monde daily, defending his methods.
According to his latest study, 65 of the 80 patients treated improved and were discharged from hospital in an average of less than five days. One patient aged 74 was still in intensive care and another aged 86 died.
But his critics say such results were fairly typical of the virus.
Two Chinese studies have shown that “10 days after the start of symptoms, 90 percent of people who have a moderate form (of the disease) have a controlled viral load,” epidemiologist Dominique Costagliola, of the French health research institute Inserm, told AFP.
The fact that they got these results using hydroxychloroquine “does not make the case for its effect,” she said.

It gets even better! I challenge you to see this stated or written on a liberal MSM show or website. It’s so bad they dont’ want to air WH updates on the virus. On the FOX livestream there was a sound problem and they cut away from it before it ended. The media, much of FOX too is doing all they can to not give Trump any credit for anything. Hitler’s Joseph Goebbels would be proud of them.

Here are just a handful of new developments from the last few days and hours.
1. Dr. Fauci when asked if he would use the Hydroxychloroquine cocktail, answered with resounding affirmation. (Simply because he had asked for better clinical evidence previously did not mean he was unaware of what the data was already showing).
2. France reversed its previous ban on the drug. When the highly esteemed Dr. Didier Raoult released his first survey’s findings the French medical authorities were resistant. As he released an even larger study, with more patients and improved results from his initial study, the French public health officials had no choice but to give guidance as to its use.
3. India’s public health guidance granted affirmation for physicians and front line medical workers to begin taking it as a preventative. This use was the very suggestion I recommended as first steps in this column a week ago. Since our own CDC has cited its prophylactic benefits our doctors and front line medical personnel should be taking it now.
4. Given the increased acceptance here in the states not one, but as many as seven different pharmaceutical companies have agreed to mass produce as much as 250 million doses by mid-April. Given Dr. Raoult’s guidance in both of his studies this would give the globe enough inventory to cure 46,000,000 cases. Presently we have not yet hit one million cases worldwide. Notably Bayer, Novartis and Teva Pharm stepped up, pledging to donate several million doses right out of the shoot.
5. Doctors began prescribing off-label use and in doing so are replicating the clinical results in remarkable fashion. One doctor in Monroe, New York has treated in excess of 700 patients. As of this writing he’s lost zero patients to death, zero to intubation, and only two to hospitalization. Another doctor in New York City has treated in excess of 100 patients with zero deaths.

I also read that India which produces the main ingredient to make HCQ has now blocked the export of that base ingredient. Also, there are health care personnel using it as a prophylactic in some NY hospitals. If it’s good enough as a prophylactic then it’s good enough and safe enough to treat positive COVID19 patients in an outpatient setting so they don’t end up as inpatients.

My mother took it for decades for RA w/o problems.
Short course therapy is no big deal. Every drug has side effects…if there are no contraindications for taking the drug under a doctor’s care…it’s OK. Nobody can ever force you to take the drug if you would rather be sick with COVID19 and you fear the “horrendous side effects.”

In other words, people who are not treated still have the virus (‘a controlled viral load’), whereas in those treated 75% had NO VIRAL LOAD.
In other words…. THE TREATMENT ELIMINATES THE VIRUS IN 75% OF PATIENTS.

All patients who are positive for COVID19…w/ or w/o symptoms should be treated with HCQ to see if they progress in their symptoms (viral load) requiring hospitalization. I wonder if any clinical trials are even being done in the outpatient setting for asymptomatic/mild cases with a control group of similar asymptomatic/mild cases. That would be more ethical than depriving a control group of anti-viral medications after they are already experiencing shortness of breath since by then they all should be treated with an anti-viral drug. We also don’t have enough HCQ because IL DUCE FAUCI poo-pooed the use of that drug. We can’t wait for clinical trial results to use HCQ or any other anti-viral agent for sick patients.

Is the NY clincal trial being run by him or someone else? Dr. Fauci appears to have all the time in the world. He reminds me of Rosenstein.

The Russians also confirm HCQ to be effective and are treating their few victims with the same HCQ cocktails the French medicins. Russia closed its 4000-mile border with China in January and stopped all flights as well. To date, there are only about 2500 cases and few confirmed deaths. Russian scientists ALSO confirm anti-malarial drugs as effective in both treating and preventing covid-19. I know if I was very it very difficult to breath I would want the ‘right to try’ the medication. By the time these scientist finish testing the pandemic will be over and many poor souls will perish!

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine patents have RUN OUT (expired!).. For this reason, US medical establishment, accustomed to pleasing “big pharma”, are not keen on recommending an “unapproved” drug. apparently it was not dangerous in treating disease in the past. Since the patent expired, the drug establishment would not be able to CHARGE WHAT THE TRAFFIC WILL BEAR, AND ARE THEREFORE NOT INTERESTED.. For Ex: will that French Dr. get any grants from the drug producers for his genius idea?
